Memories are an accessory-adjacent type of equipment, providing stat increases and boons (other beneficial perks), appearing in Dragon Quest Smash/Grow. Almost each memory represents a monster, with some memories representign groups of monsters or vocations.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Memories are sometimes obtained after clearing a stage, dropped in silver treasure chests. Usually, the memories available consist of the monsters that appear in the stage, although sometimes not all monsters' memories are available and sometimes monsters' memories appear even though they are not in the stage. Memories can also be obtained through a successful Co-Op, Shrine or Fearsome Foe event run, which guarantees a memory. The Gauntlet, Gauntlettes and Co-Op also offer memories in their Total Points Rewards, providing three B-rank memories and four A-rank memories in regular intervals.

The gameplay loop of Smash Grow consists of gathering and upgrading memories, trying to get as many Rank S memories as possible, as the maximum rank memories have better stats when equipped, have unique boons -some include starting blessings-, and can be equipped in each character's vocational tree.

Memories can be upgraded from D-rank (the most common form they drop in) up to S-rank, needing copies of the same-rank memory to Rank Up in the forge. The amount of memories of a rank needed to reach the next rank depends on the type of memory:

Note that this table indicates the amount of memories needed to rank up, meaning the player needs a base memory plus the specified number of copies in order to increase a memory's rank.

Each memory has an assigned colour, appearing on the bottom right-hand-side of its icon. Each vocation has an assigned colour, and providing the corresponding colour memory to the character will provide a stat boost for the memory. The colours are as follows:

  • Warrior: Yellow
  • Mage: Purple
  • Priest: Green
  • Martial Artist: Red
  • Thief: Blue

Memories can be equipped into three main slots on a character, as long as the combined cost is less than or equal to the allowance that a character has, which increases as a character levels up. Vocation trees also occasionally provide the option for a player to input an S-rank memory into a separate slot, provided that it meets all the required criteria of the specific slot. The character will also receive the stat boosts from the memory as if it had been equipped into one of their main slots.

Obtaining memories of different achieves Album Feats, which reward the player with Album Points. Gathering certain amounts of AP, grants the player permanent stats bonuses and gems. The amount of AP obtained varies per rank:

  • D-rank: 1 AP
  • C-rank: 1 AP
  • B-rank: 2 AP
  • A-rank: 3 AP
  • S-rank: 5 AP
