The '''Pandora's Box''' ('''DorasBox''' in previous translations due to display constraints) is a recurring monster in the [[Dragon Quest (series)|Dragon Quest series]]. They are monstrous treasure chests of an imposing black color with gold lining.

==Characteristics==
Pandora's Box is essentially the most powerful form of the treasure chest monsters. It can use sudden-death moves that target the whole party, move more than once per round, and steal MP from its opponent when its own MP, which is rather low, gets too depleted for it to cast its spells.

While absent from the original, Pandora's Box makes appearances in the remakes as a monster encountered in the bonus dungeon. Given its strength and the absence of items that hamper sudden-death it is one of the most dangerous enemies in the game, especially when encountered as a group.

===Creation===
It is unknown the exact time the mask was created, however its creators were guardians in the [[Mirror World]]. They gave the mask to the 'people across the glass' in [[Avalonia]] in order to contain Xiphos' power. The first use of the mask is recorded on a carving at the top of [[Arondight Heights]], showing the mask being used to capture Xiphos.

===Before the events of Dragon Quest Swords===
Before the story of Dragon Quest Swords begins, it is known that the hero's father, [[Claymore]], [[Aruval]], and 2 other men were successful in defeating an awakened Xiphos. However, they were ignorant of the power of the mask that he wore and were not able to fully destroy or capture him. As a result, the mask fell into the hands of [[Queen Curtana]] and it took control of her body.

===During the events of Dragon Quest Swords===

During Dragon Quest Swords, the hero and his party confront the queen and he slashes the mask off of her face. This is done with the belief that the mask is harming the queen, when really the mask is simply containing a portion of Xiphos power. As a result, Xiphos is completely freed and raises his [[Deathbringer's Citadel|his citadel]]. The heroes in turn must travel to the [[Mirror World]] to have the mask repaired by its makers. After later defeating Xiphos, the hero is able to place the mask on him, fully capturing his power into it. However, while escaping the collapsing citadel, the hero drops the mask, leaving its present status unknown. This final event leaves opportunity for a sequel.

In the game the player character starts as a Minstrel. The player would venture alone until Stornway. At which point the option would be given to create compainions. In much the same way the player character was created. Classes Available from this point are: Minstrel, Warrior, Mage, Martial Artist, Priest, and Thief. Later in the game additional classes can be unlock.

Minstrel: All-round entertainers who encourage those around them with all manner of marvels, and wage war with whips, fans, and swords. The minstrel is a Hybrid class. Capable of wearing all but the most stringent armor. The minstrel can be a formidable caster when the need arises. While the Minstrel will never accel at physcial attack or magical attacks, the mixture of both is sure to make up.

Warrior: Mighty fighters who make good use of Swords, Spears, and Knives, and who courageously cover their companions. The warrior has substancial physical attack and defense. While the Warrior's attacks won't be nearly as powerful as a Gladiator, the Warrior can take a beating like no other. The warrior is the 'tank' of Dragon Quest 9.

The mage does considerable damage through magical means. In addition to martial magic the mage has also has abilities to buff the party and debuff enemies. Making the mage a viable support class as well as a considerable damage role.
