Fizzle is a recurring spell in the Dragon Quest series. Introduced in the original game, it is a spell that attempts to seal the spells of the target/targets, preventing them from casting magic.

Interestingly, Fizzle does not prevent those afflicted from being able to speak as is the case with instances of spell-sealing seen in other media. This can be seen during the in-battle Party chat seen in the PSX version of VII.

Localization History
The original Japanese versions of the Monsters: Joker spinoffs introduced a single-target spell by the name of Mahotomu and continued to use the name Mahotōn for the multi-target spell. The English localization team decided to use the name Fizzle for the new single-target spell in the games, while using the new name Kafizzle for the original spell, which always affected a group of enemies. This practice has become standard for games the feature both spells.

Appearances
Dragon Quest
Fizzle is learned by the Hero 1 at level 10. It costs 2 MP to use it against an enemy, and it stops them from casting spells. Like with other spells in the original title, Fizzle uses a resistance table based on 16; I.E. 1 in 16 to hit, 2 in 16, and so on. Due to the way the game's calculations are programmed, no enemies are fully immune to Fizzle, with its odds of working bottoming out at 1/16. Some enemies, such as scorpions, will not be affected, because they do not have any spells.

The enemies Drohl diabolist, Scarewolf, Knight errant, and the first form of the Dragonlord can use this spell against the player. Enemy Fizzle spells have a 50/50 chance of working each time the spell is cast. If the Hero is wearing Erdrick's Armour, enemy Fizzle spells will always fail against him.

Fizzle is learned by Mages at level 18 and Druids at level 59, costing 3 MP to cast. Its chance of success is dependent on either the caster's Magical might or Magical mending, whichever happens to be higher.
Called StopSpell in this game, this ability can be learned by various monsters. It requires the monster to be at least level 9, with at least 44 MP, and 38 intelligence. It is naturally learned by the CatFly, Centasaur, Crestpent, DarkHorn, FaceTree, Gremlin, JewelBag and Snapper among others.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2
Dragon Quest Builders
Fizzle is known naturally by King slime and Magic marionette at level 1 and can be learned by Bag o' laughs and Stump chump at level 16. Sizzle is a spell in the Dragon Quest series. The spell will bake a group of enemies in a wave of hellfire, most commonly dealing 30~42 damage for 6 MP.

Appearances
DQ
The Hero learns the spell at level 19, and may cast it for 5 MP. It deals 58~65 damage in the original version, and 50~65 damage in all subsequent versions. As combat was limited to one enemy per battle, it was a single-target spell.
The enemies Vis mager, Knight abhorrent, and the first form of the Dragonlord can use this spell against the player.

DQ2
The Prince of Cannock learns Sizzle at level 18, and he can cast it for just 4 MP. The spell deals 17~33 damage in the original version, and 50~65 in the Super Famicom and GBC versions.

In the smartphone and Nintendo Switch versions, the spell has been redacted to affect only one group of enemies, as in later games, and its cost has risen to 5 MP.

DQ3
Sizzle is learned by the Hero at Level 23, and both Mages & Sages at Level 14. The spell's cost and damage parameters become established in this entry of the series, 30~42 for 6 MP, remaining consistent ever since.

DQ4
Sizzle is learned by Maya at Level 14. The Hero 4's tutor planned to teach him the spell during the DQ4 Prologue, but never got around to it.
Sizzle is learned by Ashlynn at level 16, and is already known by Goober upon joining. Other characters can learn it by advancing to rank 3 of the Mage vocation.

DQ7
Sizzle is learned by Mages at rank 7.

DQ8
Sizzle is learned by both the Hero 8 and Jessica at level 20. It deals 20~34 base damage before their Wisdom reaches 100, and caps at 53~62 once the stat hits 150.

DQ10
Sizzle is learned by Dancers at level 27 and Death Masters at level 60. Its damage is calculated as Magical Might x 0.3 + 20 with an upper range of 162~170 once the caster's Magical Might reaches 487. Distance covered is eight meters and it costs 8 MP.
* During the game's "Decisive Battle at the Dragonlord's Castle" limited Dragon Quest I event, the player is able to cast Sizzle as the Hero, as well. It deals 58~65 damage much like in the original game.

DQ11
Veronica and the Hero 11 will learn Sizzle at levels 21 and 23 respectively. The spell costs 7 MP to cast and hits a base range of 36~44, with a cap of 82~90 once the caster's magical might reaches 227.

DQM
Called Firebane in this game, it is an upgraded form of Firebal. Firebal grows into Firebane when the monster reaches level 10 with 34 MP, and 52 intelligence. Firebane grows into Firebolt when the monster reaches level 26 with 96 MP and 122 intelligence.

DQM2
Firebane now requires 94 intelligence to learn and 220 intelligence to upgrade.

DQMJ2
Sizzle has a base damage range of 22~25 and a maximum range of 62~65. It can be learned from:
As Maya levels up more, she will be able to upgrade the spell and learn Kasizz. It can also be cast by enemy Silvapithecuses and Sorcerers.
* Like all of Maya's spells and abilities, she is able to cast it in midair if she has learned Soaring Sizzler for 5 skill points.
It can be cast for 24 MP, has a range of three squares in front of the caster, and inflicts moderate Sizz-type spell damage to all enemies in a range of three squares horizontally. It can also be taught to any unit by using an ability scroll.
Many characters in the series are capable of casting Sizzle, including Dai himself, Popp, and the Demon Lord Hadlar. However, unlike in the games, Sizzle is depicted as a beam of light and heat fired from the caster's palm after gathering energy. Dai first casts the spell against a Killing machine being controlled by the villainous sage Baron.
Sizzle is randomly available through the Hero's Command Selection ability. Similar to Sizz, Sizzle launches a smoldering projectile that ignites the opponent and ground upon contact with an enemy. It costs 20 MP to cast, but will inflict 25% with a high knockback that reliably kills at 100% near a stage's edge.
Snooze (Originally localized as Sleep) is a recurring spell in the DQSeries. The spell targets a group of enemies and attempts to lull them into a sorcerous slumber for 1~4 turns. Unless the enemy has a resistance, the spell will always be successful when cast.

Appearances
DQ
Snooze is learned by the Hero 1 at Level 7. It costs 2 MP to cast. A snoozing enemy will always sleep for at least one turn, and have a 1/3 chance of waking up each subsequent turn. Like with other spells in the original title, Snooze uses a resistance table based on 16; I.E. 1 in 16 to hit, 2 in 16, and so on. Due to the way the game's calculations are programmed, no enemies are fully immune to Snooze, with its odds of working bottoming out at 1/16.

The enemies Legerdeman, Spitegeist, Hocus chimaera, Knight aberrant, and Dread dragon can use this spell against the player. Enemy Snooze spells will never fail to put the Hero to sleep. While asleep, the Hero has a 50/50 chance of waking up each turn. Due to the way the game's random number generation is programmed, the Hero will never sleep for longer than 6 turns at a time.

DQ2
Snooze is learned by The Princess of Moonbrooke at Level 2. Magic in II utilizes a resistance table based on 8 instead of 16.

DQ3
Snooze is learned by The Hero 4 at Level 16, and by Priests & Sages at Level 9. III set the standard for magical resistances, introducing the familiar 100%, 75%, 25%, 0% accuracy ranges now familiar to players.

DQ4
Snooze is learned by Borya at Level 5 and Meena at Level 6. The spell is also used by Laurel and Tom Foolery.

DQ7
Maribel learns Snooze at Level 7. Other characters can learn the spell by reaching rank 2 in the Mage vocation. The spell costs 3 MP to cast.
DQ9
Snooze is learned by Armamentalists at level 8 and Priests at Level 6, costing 3 MP to cast with a 50% base accuracy. The chance of success will begin to rise once the caster's Magical Might surpasses 50 points, capping at 100% when the value reaches 999.

DQM
Called Sleep in this game, this ability can be learned by a variety of monsters. It requires the monster to reach at least Level 4 with at least 24 MP and 16 Intelligence. It grows into SleepAll when the monster reaches level 11 with at least 52 MP and 46 Intelligence. It is naturally learned the Almiraj, DarkHorn, Dracky, DuckKite, EvilPot, Gulpple, StagBug, Stubsuck and Wyvern.

DQM2
Sleep now requires 29 Intelligence to learn and 83 Intelligence to upgrade. It is naturally learned by the BeastNite, HaloSlime, LampGenie, MerTiger, Moray and Slurperon. It is no longer naturally learned by the EvilPot or Gulpple.
Snooze is a spell that the Hero can cast under his Down special, Command Selection. The spell sends out a wispy projectile that flies directly forward. Enemies hit at a distance will be asleep for less time than those affected at close range. This spell can be used as a K.O. method against foes who are already off-stage, dropping them like stones.
The spell Midheal (ベホイミ Behoimi) is a recurring healing spell in the DQSeries. It restores a moderate amount of HP to one character, and is related to the spells Heal, Moreheal, Fullheal, Multiheal, and Omniheal.

Medislimes are known for casting this spell on their allies in battle, often prolonging encounters considerably.

Appearances
DQ
The Hero 1 learns Midheal at Level 17, and needs 10 MP to cast it in the original version, and 8 in the remakes. It restores 85~100 HP in all versions.
The enemies Cosmic Chimaera and Knight Abhorrent can use this spell to heal themselves.

DQ2
Midheal is learned by The Prince of Cannock at Level 14, while The Princess of Moonbrooke starts with it. It requires 5 MP to cast in all versions of the game. Oddly, the spell's healing rates in and out of battle are different in the original version; when cast in battle the spell will operate within the familiar 85~100 range, but when cast outside of battle the spell will restore only 43~85 hit points. This unusual aspect is not present in any of the remakes.

DQ3
Midheal is learned by The Hero 3 at Level 29, and by Priests & Sages at Level 14. It requires 5 MP to cast and restores 74~95 HP, setting the standard for it's subsequent appearances.

The spell can also cause damage to Zoma after the Sphere of Light is used on him.

DQ4
Midheal is learned by the Hero 4 at level 7, Meena at 13, and Kiryl at 16.
Midheal is already known by Nevan, Goober, and Kingsley upon joining the party, and is learned by Milly at level 13, Healie at level 9, and Curie at level 6. Everyone else can learn it by advancing to rank 4 of the Priest vocation.

DQ7
The Hero 7 learns the spell at Level 12, while Sir Mervyn already knows the spell when he joins the party. It costs 4 MP to cast and restores around 75~95 HP to a single party member. All other characters can learn the spell by advancing to rank 5 as a Priest. In the Nintendo 3DS version, Armamentalists and Pirates will automatically learn the spell at rank 1. The spell can also be cast by using the Staff of salvation or Sage's staff as a tool in battle.

The spell is also known by Zev and High Priestess Jacqueline.
Midheal can also occasionally be cast by Healix on one of the heroes if they are at low HP. The chance to be randomly healed by Healix will be boosted if any characters are wielding Slime weapons or they are wearing Slime earrings.

Heal is a recurring spell in the DQSeries. As its name suggests, it functions to restore the Hit Points of the character it is used on. As the seminal spell of the franchise, Heal is almost always the first spell learned by the Hero/Heroine in their adventure. It is related to the more powerful spells Midheal, Moreheal, Multiheal, Fullheal, and Omniheal.

Heal and its variations are commonly learned by Priests and the game's Hero.

Certain monsters (e.g. a Healslime) can also know this spell, with more powerful palette swaps knowing improved versions of the spell.
Heal is learned by Hero 1 at Level 3. In the original version it will restore 10~17 HP for 4 MP, and 25~30 for 3 MP in the remakes.
The enemies Drackyma, Raving lunatick, Skeleton scrapper, and Skeleton soldier can use this spell to heal themselves.
The Prince of Cannock knows the spell upon being recruited. It restores 23~42 hit points in the original, and 25~30 in the remakes. Both versions cost 3 MP.
Heal restores 30~40 HP for 3 MP, and is learned by the following characters:
Heal is automatically learned by one who is a Priest from the beginning, but those who become a Priest or Sage in the Alltrades Abbey 3 need to advance one level to learn it. In the mobile port, this is changed so that anyone who becomes a Priest or Sage automatically knows the spell at level 1.

The Hero can learn it much sooner for use in battle in the NES Version if a glitch is exploited in Patty's Party Planning Place where too many companions are registered, though it will prevent The Hero from being able to learn it for use on the world map.
The spell can cause damage to Zoma after the Sphere of Light is used on him.
The basic heal spell is known by Kiryl and Meena at level 1. Healie and Laurel also know the spell. It costs 2 MP to cast and Heals 30~40 HP (unless it heals the target completely) to party members.
Heal initially restores the usual 30~40 hit points when used, but when the caster's magical mending surpasses 50 it will gradually improve in potency. Once the caster's mending has reached 999, the spell will restore 155~165 HP.
It costs 2 MP to cast, has a base range of 25~31 HP restored and reaches to a maximum of 95~101 once the caster's Magical mending reaches 410. Heal can be learned by a Healslime or Slime knight monster companion for 3 skill points, as well.
DQ11
The Hero 11 learns Heal at level 5, and Serena 11 will join the party having already mastered the spell. It costs 3 MP to cast, has a base range of 25~35, and a maximum range of 35~45.

|DQ=Restores 25-30 HP.
Heal is learned by Hero 1 at Level 3. In the original version it will restore 10~17 HP for 4 MP, and 25~30 for 3 MP in the remakes.
The enemies Drackyma, Raving lunatick, Skeleton scrapper, and Skeleton Knight can use this spell to heal themselves.

DQ4
The basic heal spell is known by Kiryl and Meena at level 1. Healie and Laurel also know the spell. It costs 2 MP to cast and Heals 30~40 HP (unless it heals the target completely) to party members.
Heal initially restores the usual 30~40 hit points when used, but when the caster's magical mending surpasses 50 it will gradually improve in potency. Once the caster's mending has reached 999, the spell will restore 155~165 HP.
Heal is already known by Priests and Sages at level 1 and can be learned by Minstrels at level 2, Paladins at level 4, Luminaries at level 5, Rangers at level 6, Thieves at level 8, and is known by Death Masters at level 50.
Sizz is a spell in the DQSeries. It is the premier offensive spell, introduced in the original Dragon Quest, and is often learned by Magi and other practitioners of offensive magic.

Up until Dragon Quest III, Sizz was a single fireball that attacks a single enemy. Ever since then, Sizz is now depicted as a line of fire that attacks a group of enemies; Frizz would now take Sizz's place as a single fireball that hits one enemy. The flames intensify and movements grow more elaborate as the spell line advances.
The enemies Metal Slime, Drackolyte, Drackyma, Raving lunatick, Prestidigitator, Legerdeman, Fightgeist, and Spitegeist can use this spell against the player.

DQ2
The Prince of Cannock learns this spell at level 3. It deals 15~25 damage the original version, but increased in the game's remakes, now dealing 16~20. and will cost 2 MP in these versions.
*Starting with the smartphone remake, the spell has been changed to adhere to the latter series convention, now hitting one group of enemies for 10~17 damage for 3 MP.

DQ3
Sizz is learned by Magi and Sages at level 7 and the Hero 3 at level 10 depending on their Wisdom stat. It deals 16~24 damage for 4 MP. This entry is when the spell first gained its ability to hit a group of enemies.

DQ4
Sizz is learned by Maya at level 7 and the Hero 4 at level 11. Laurel knows the spell upon joining Torneko. It costs 4 MP to cast.

DQ6
Sizz is learned by Ashlynn at level 6, and is already known by Mercury upon joining. Other characters can learn it by advancing to rank 2 of the Mage vocation.
Sizz is learned by both the Hero 8 and Jessica at level 11. It deals an average of 16~24 damage and will increase in power once the character's Wisdom surpasses 40, capping at 29~35 once they reach 70 wisdom.

DQ9
DQ10
The Sizz line did not initially appear at the game's debut, but was eventually added in Version 3.0.
