Vearn, known as the Dark King, is the main antagonist of DQDai. He is known by many as the God of the Underworld. Vearn is the supreme leader of the Dark Army and is responsible for the revival of the Dark Lord Hadlar after his defeat at the hands of Avan. For thousands of years, Vearn has plotted against humanity and the surface world.

Appearance
In his wizened form, Vearn has the appearance of an old human man with tanned skin with long white hair and a long beard. Unusually amongst the denizens of the underworld, his skin tone is similar in appearance to that of a human. He has sharp claws on his fingers, pointed ears, and a pair of tall demonic horns growing from both sides of his head. In the middle of his forehead, he has a third eye, known as the Sovereign Eye, which is actually the source of his immense magic power. He wears a long white robe covered by a cloak with a gold border that covers most of his body (originally coloured white, but teal in the 2020 anime series and most appearances), a purple chestplate, large black shoulder pads, and black slippers, all with gold detailing. On his head, Vearn wears a purple and gold crown.

Abilities
As a Mage with millennia of experience, Vearn can cast spells at many times their normal power, defying the conventional wisdom (and game mechanics of the time) that spells function at more-or-less the same effect regardless of the strength of the caster. In particular, he is unrivalled when it comes to Frizz spells, such as the infamous scene where he shows that even his basic Frizz spell has more firepower than Popp's ultimate Kafrizz. Vearn is also able to cast Boom a seemingly endless amount of times from both of his hands, each of them being as destructive as Kaboom. Unlike other mages Vearn can cast spells instantly without pausing for rest, allowing him to rain attacks of incredible destructive power in quick succession or even raise defences like Bounce while simultaneously attacking - a skill compared to the ability of some bosses in the DQSeries to act twice in a single turn.

Despite having the appearance of an elderly man, Vearn is strong and skilled enough to go toe-to-toe in melee combat with some of the greatest warriors of the surface world. Vearn bolsters his prowess in close combat with his Staff of Edacity, a weapon which converts mana into physical power, making him strong enough to shatter weapons made of Orichalcum and block attacks as powerful as Doruora. However, it has a major drawback as it consumes a large amount of his magic power over time the longer he wields it.

Like all Darklings, Vearn possesses two hearts and will not die until both are destroyed. In addition he possesses regenerative abilities far beyond the norm for his kind, capable of regrowing a destroyed heart in mere moments (or any part of his body, if both hearts are intact).

Some of Vearn's other signature techniques include:
* Aura Shot: With little more than a gesture, Vearn can release a burst of Dark Aura capable of shattering the walls of Vearn Palace and defeating Dai in a single blow.
* Kaiser Phoenix: Vearn's own version of the Kafrizz spell. Due to his immense magic power, it takes on the form of a majestic fiery bird that utterly incinerates its target with hellfire. This spell's extreme power has been shown to overload and destroy artefacts designed to block magic.
* Calamitous Wall: Performed with the Staff of Edacity, Vearn sweeps the ground in front of him in a semi-circular arc, sending forth a shockwave of energy erupting from the ground with properties similar to Aura.

After regaining his youthful body, Vearn gains the following additional techniques:
* Calamity End: The original form of Calamitous Wall, a simple hand chop delivered with monstrous strength surpassing that of the Staff of Edacity.
* Phoenix Wing: A technique that combines offense and defence. Vearn is able to deflect and parry an opponent's attack at incredible speed, reflecting even spells as powerful as Medroa back at the attacker with nothing more than the palm of his hand. Its name is derived from the fact that the appearance is reminiscent of the flapping of a phoenix's wing.
* Sovereign Eye: Vearn's third eye automatically charms any nearby opponent below a certain level of strength, imprisoning them in a small jewel.
* Demonic Stance of Heaven and Earth: A stance which further improves Vearn's ability to "take double turns", allowing him to use all three of Calamity End, Phoenix Wing and Kaiser Phoenix at the same time. This technique's greatest weakness is that Vearn must stand perfectly still to hold the required energy, making it a purely defensive ability which leaves him briefly vulnerable after use.

After his last resort transformation into the monstrous "Sovereign Supreme", Vearn grows to tremendous size, losing most of his techniques but gaining strength and durability far surpassing even the Dragonoid form of a fully-realised Dragon Knight.
Other Appearances
DQStars
Vearn appears as a boss in both his aged form and his younger body in collaboration events in the Japanese version of the game. The player is also able to acquire pieces of equipment in order to dress like the wizened Dark King Vearn and wield the Staff of Edacity.

DQTact
Dark King Vearn appears as a S-rank member of the ??? family during the third part of the limited Second Adventure of Dai event on his own banner alongside Zaboera. He can participate in Mystvearn's Battle Road as a party member.
Frizz is a recurring offensive spell in the DQSeries.

Introduced in DQ3, it is a single target spell (in contrast to group-searing Sizz) and is often learned by Mages.

It is depicted as a single fireball that attacks the enemy. The advanced versions are Frizzle, Kafrizz, & Kafrizzle, with the fireball growing more colossal with each stage.

Appearances
DQ3
Mages and Sages automatically learn this spell at Level 1 and the Hero 3 can learn it at Level 2. It costs 2 MP to cast, and fries an enemy for 8~14 points of damage.

The enemies Prestidigitator, Cumaulus, and Metal slime can use this spell against the Party 3.

DQ4
Maya Mahabala knows this spell at Level 1. It costs her 2 MP to cast, and lets her burn an enemy for between 8~14 points of damage.

The enemies Winkster, Firespirit, Metal slime, and Psaro's Pawn use this spell against the Party 4.

DQ5
Hits between 12~15 points of damage and costs 2 MP to cast.

Killer torch, Haunted Housekeeper, and Frizzard use it only as enemies.

DQ6
Ashlynn already knows this spell upon joining, and is the only Party 6 member to learn it. It allows her to hit one enemy for 11~15 damage and costs 2 MP as usual.

The enemies Metal slime, Cumaulus, and First Test can use this spell against the Party 6.

DQ7
Maribel Mayde learns this at Level 3. The Chimaera class can also learn it on the second rank. It cost 2 MP to cast and can do 11~15 damage.

It can be cast by the enemies Meowgician, Clawcerer, Crabble-rouser, Bag o' laughs, Metal slime, Prancing pillar, Frizzard, and Scarfish.

DQ8
Jessica Albert already knows this spell upon joining the Party 8. The spell will deal 10~13 base damage, and cap at 21~24 when her Wisdom reaches 77.

Jessica uses this to get both the Hero 8 and Yangus are at the Tower of Alexandra thinking them to be thieves. She later burns the vines off of the library door in Trodain (while the curse is still active).

The enemies Firespirit, Bag o' laughs, and Metal slime can use this spell.
It is also available to the Infamous Monsters Metaly (Recruit), and Trick Bag (Recruit).

DQ9
Frizz is automatically learned by Mages at Level 1. It singes a single enemy with a small fireball for 2 MP, dealing 11~15 base damage and grows in Strength when the caster's Magical Might reaches 50. Once the stat reaches 999, the spell will deal 98~102 damage.

DQ10
Mages start off knowing the spell at Level 1, and Dancers learn it at Level 3. The damage formula is (Magical Might) x 0.227 +5.5, with a minimum and maximum damage range of 6~10 and 74~78, respectively. It costs 2 MP to cast.

DQ11
Veronica 11 already knows how to cast Frizz when she joins, and the Luminary learns it at Level 2. It has a low range of 8~12, and a maximum range of 34~38 once her Magical Might hits 150.

DQM
Called Blaze in this game, this ability can be learned by various MFamiliess. It requires the MFamilies to be at least Level 2, with at least 7 MP, and 20 intelligence. It grows into Blazemore when the MFamilies reaches at least Level 13 with at least 46 MP and 64 Intelligence. It is naturally learned by the 1EyeClown, Demonite, FireWeed, GateGuard, Jamirus, LavaMan, MadCandle, Metaly, Mimic, Mirudraas and Servant.

DQM2
Blaze now requires 36 Intelligence to learn and 116 Intelligence to upgrade. It is naturally learned by the ArrowDog, CatMage, EvilWell, FoxFire and KingSlime.

DQMJ
Frizz singes a single enemy with a small fireball. It costs 2 MP to cast, has a 97~101 maximum damage range, and can be learned from:
*Diabolist (4 points)
*Fire (3 points)
*Fire Fighter (4 points)
*Frizz & Bang (3 points)
*Frizz & Woosh (3 points)
*Frizz & Zam (2 points)
*Frizz & Zap (3 points)
*Hawkhart (5 points)
*Muspell (4 points)
*Slimer (2 points)

DQMJ2
Frizz can still be learned from all the same skills as in the previous game, as well as with 3 points in Frizz & Sizz. It has a maximum range of 97~103 damage.

Terry's Wonderland 3D & Iru and Luca's Marvelous Mysterious Key
Frizz costs 2 MP and deals a minimum range of 14~15. Once a MFamilies's Wisdom stat reaches 499, it will deal 109~120 damage.

DQMJ3
Frizz has the same cost and damage parameters as in the preview two games.

DQM3
Frizz costs 2 MP and has a base damage of 15. Once a monster's wisdom surpasses 50, the spell's power will rise to an average of 115 damage at 499 wisdom. Frizz is learned via the Blazer, Frizz Afficionado, Magic Maven, Slimer, and Spicy Slasher talents.

DQH
Frizz is the main offensive spell that Bianca can cast in battle. She shoots a small fireball for 4 MP. As her level increases, she can upgrade the spell and also cast Frizzle and Kafrizz by charging up Frizz.
Frizz is known naturally by Beleth, Cosmic chimaera, Dark King Vearn, Dracky, Firespirit, Killer torch, Lavaman, Meowgician, Mottle she-slime, and Wax murderer at Level 1 and can be learned by Ghost at Level 16. It costs 4 MP to cast, has a range of three squares away from the caster in any direction, and inflicts minor Frizz-type spell damage to a single enemy. Dark King Vearn's base perk That was Frizz raises the spell's potency by 800% whenever he casts it. It can also be taught to any unit by using an ability scroll.
Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai
Frizz is a common attack spell among mages and the most basic of the fire element, launching a fist-sized fireball at an opponent.

Hadlar can imbue his Frizz with the ability to cling to its target like hellfire, making it a perfect counter to the temporary invulnerability of the Kaclang spell.

At the start of the series, Frizz is the strongest offensive spell in Dai's repertoire. However, lacking much talent for magic without his Dragon Crest he is unable to propel it towards his target, forcing him to physically punch the fireball instead. After Dai gains the ability to imbue spells into his attacks, he would largely stop using Frizz outside of the Fire Earth Slash technique, with the Hero-exclusive Zapple spell taking its place as his main form of magical attack.

In Demon King Vearn's first encounter with the heroes he demonstrates a fire spell many times more powerful than anything else seen in the series, exploding into enormous firestorms capable of incinerating normally fireproof materials in an instant. Popp reacts with disbelief that Vearn's ultimate Kafrizz spell could be so much stronger than his own, only for Vearn to deliver one of his most infamous lines: "That was not Kafrizz. That was Frizz.".

AHB
Frizz appears as a spell for Popp and the Luminary Leader. It is a long-range attack that inflicts magical Fire damage over a small area. It is already known by Popp in his Dermline Dress outfit and can be unlocked by obtaining the Rune Staff from Treasure Hunts.

SSB5
Frizz appears as the Hero Smash's neutral special move in SSB5 and costs 6 MP to cast. It is a quick, but weak, fireball that travels forward and deals 9% damage upon impact. The heat of the spell dissipates the further it travels, singing for only 6% at it's longest range before snuffing out altogether. It can be charged up and turned into Frizzle and Kafrizz, much like Robin's Thunder tomes.

Enemy versions
The foe's fireball will deal 7~12 damage in its first appearance and stuck with that simmer until VIII, where it would weaken to 6~9 damage. Beginning with IX, Frizz deals 7~10 damage.
Trivia
In the English translation of the Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai manga, one scene mistakenly leaves Frizz's Japanese name untranslated: on seeing Dai imbue a Frizz spell into his sword, Hyunckel identifies it as "the flames of Mera".
