Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibouken (DRAGON QUEST -ダイの大冒険-, "Dragon Quest: Dai's Great Adventure") is a long-running manga by Sanjo Riku and Inada Koji set in the Dragon Quest world, based mainly on Dragon Quest III and its class system. It features filler pages giving game-like character stats of the heroes, and often explains details of the spells used in the games.

The plot centers around the revival of the Demon Lord defeated in an earlier war, his attempts to conquer the world and the fight of the heroes against him.

An anime series based on the manga was also produced.

Characters
Heroes
* Dai, the main hero. He has grown up on an island full of friendly monsters. For a short time, he has been trained by Avan, but he always has difficulty casting spells, usually it works only when he is very angry. His birth name, given by Baran is Dino.

* Avan, who trains the hero for a short time, but then dies fighting Hadlar. He remains ever-present as a role model, and many of the characters are former disciples or comrades of Avan. Near the end, it turns out that Avan is alive after all.

* Pop, another disciple of Avan who came to Dai's island with him. He is the first party member to join, so to say. A magic user with a lazy and cowardly streak who often has to be shamed into doing the right (heroic) thing, he provides the comic relief in the series.

* Maam, daughter of the warrior and the priest who fought with Avan in the previous war, and a former disciple of his, is the next to join. She is described as a white mage warrior. She has no offensive spells, but a gun Avan gave her that can fire spells on bullets. Pop, who initially detests her, later develops a crush on Maam. When her gun breaks, she trains to become a Warrior.

* Leona, the young princess of Papnika, a land of sages. Early in the manga, Dai saves her from a conspiracy that tries to use a ritual on the island to kill her, and falls in love with her.

* Gomechan, a gold metal slime with wings. He rarely takes an active part in battle, but is something like the mascot of the series.

* Hyunkel, the only human commander in the Demon Army. He later defects into the good side. He is one of Avan's disciples.

* Beast King Crocodine, commander of the Beast Army, who later defects into the good side.

The Demon Army
* Hadlar, who was defeated by Avan in the previous war and kills him early in the manga. He later defects into the good side.
* Baran, Dai's birth father. He is the commander of the Dragon Army. Also, he is a Dragon Knight, like Dai. He is killed by Hadlar.

Minor characters
* Brass, Dai's adoptive father.

* The fake heroes, a group who act as heroes but are really just after money. The members in detail:
** Derolin (でろりん), hero.
** Zurbon (ずるぼん), priest (female).
** Masopho (まぞっほ), mage.
** Hero-Hero (へろへろ), soldier.

* The King of Romos, a typical elderly, rotund Dragon Quest King.

* Matoriv, a sadistic and lecherous old mage who fought on the side of Avan in the previous war. Reluctantly he agrees to help the heroes again and trains Pop for a while. Graphically, Matoriv sticks out among the characters; both his design and the style in which he is drawn resemble Moebius rather than anything from the Dragon Quest series.

Influence on the series
Being the most popular and longest-running Dragon Quest spin-off, Dai no Daibouken left an impact on the video games that inspired it. The most significant influence is the introduction of Skills performed by human characters. Characters routinely perform extraordinary feats that go beyond the scope of the generic attack battle command seen in the series up until IV.

In particular, Avan's Strong Slash sword technique and Hyunkel's Grand Cruz ability would be incorporated beginning with VI as Gigaslash and Pearly Gates. Interestingly, such skills are presented in the manga as being immensely dangerous to the user, requiring perfect execution to prevent one's body from tearing itself apart due to the incredible power output.
Zoom (ルーラ, Ruura, Ruler), is a recurring spell in the Dragon Quest series that allows for instantaneous transportation to previously visited locales.

Function
In the first game, the spell allows the protagonist to return to Tantegel castle. In the second game, it allows the party to return to the last place where the game was saved. In all games starting with the third, it gives a list of previously visited locations and allows the player to choose a destination. It (usually) does not work indoors, as it causes the party to hit their heads on the ceiling.

While the spell is assumed to be genuine teleportation, it is actually rapid flight on a linear path that the caster cannot directly control--hence why only familiar locations such as towns and kingdoms can be flown to. The recurring chimaera wing item casts this spell upon use.

In the original versions of each Chunsoft developed game, the spell would cost 8 MP to cast. Beginning with VI, the cost was reduced to just 1 MP, with remakes of the older titles being adjusted accordingly.

Appearances
Dragon Quest
Return is learned at level 13, and requires 8 units of MP to use.

Dragon Quest II
Return is learned by The Prince of Cannock at level 10. Until the release of the mobile phone version in 2014, Zoom would only return the party to the location where they last saved their game.

Dragon Quest III
Return is learned by The Hero at level 7, and both Mages & Sages at level 12.

The Hero can learn it in battle with the use of a glitch, though to use it prevents the spell from being learned in the field.

Dragon Quest IV
Zoom is learned by The Hero at level 7, Borya at level 9, and Maya at level 8, and is already known by Psaro upon joining. Note that the destination list resets after each chapter.

Additionally, an NPC Minidemon attempts to use the spell to chase Torneko Taloon from Pharos Beacon to Porthtrunnel, but bumps his head and falls becomes unconscious.

The hero learns Zoom after helping Prof. Toilen Trubble with his research in the town of Zoomingale, and this event is required to advance the plot. None of the other party members that can learn the spell are encountered until after this. The spell is used as a plot device at certain events, such as if the hero marries Nera or Debora, and is later used by his daughter to carry him home after rescuing him. This marks the first installment that used a spell as a plot event.

Dragon Quest VI
Zoom is learned by Ashlynn and the Hero at level 8, and by Mercury at level 5. Other characters can learn it by advancing to either rank 3 of the Mage vocation or rank 4 of the Liquid Metal Slime vocation.

In the Nintendo DS version, after unlocking access to Alltrades Abbey, the spell can be upgraded by Madame Luca Luminista to enable warping between worlds.

Dragon Quest VII
Zoom is learned through the same method as in VI.

Dragon Quest VIII
The Hero learns this spell after investing 8 points into his "Courage" skill.

Dragon Quest IX
Zoom is a special ability learned exclusively by the Hero after a plot event. Unlike earlier games, it costs no MP to cast.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Zoom is one of the spells that can be used by the Hero through his Down special, Command Selection. This costs 8 MP to use, and allows the Hero to quickly fly back to the main platform of the stage, provided he isn't obstructed by a ceiling overhead. Compared to the Hero's up-special attack (Woosh, which can be further charged-up to Swoosh and Kaswoosh), Zoom provides a greatly increased vertical-recovery distance and a period of invincibility with a much lower MP cost than Kaswoosh, but has the notable downsides of not damaging opponents, the ascent being followed by a swift and uncontrollable descent with very little horizontal movement, and the inherent unreliability of the Command Selection menu's randomly-chosen options.

*Chapters 55 and 56 of Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibouken elaborate on the Ruura spell and explain it as the ability to go to a place if you can form an image of it in your mind.
*In Dragon Quest V, it's suggested that transporting too many people with this spell at once causes physical strain or even unconsciousness, as the hero blacks out after transporting the wedding entourage to Ventuno Casino Ship.
