Princess Gwaelin is an NPC character in the original Dragon Quest. She is the daughter of the king of Tantegel and has been kidnapped by the Dragonlord. During the game, she can be rescued by The Hero as a sidequest. This makes her the one and only sidequest present in the original Dragon Quest.

Appearances
Dragon Quest
Rescue
The Hero may rescue Gwaelin during his quest to defeat the Dragonlord, though this is not a requirement to complete the game. She is located inside the Quagmire Cave south of Kol which connects to the southeastern continent. In order to rescue Gwaelin, the Hero must fight and defeat a ferocious Green Dragon that guards her (rather lavish) cell. This monster is not visible on the dungeon map screen, but rather is trigger when the Hero steps on a specific tile (similar to the Golem which guards Mercado). If the Dragonlord is defeated prior to the Princess' rescue, she will still be in her cell and able to be rescued, though the Green Dragon will not be present.

After rescuing the princess, the Hero carries her back to her father at Tantegel castle. A sprite showing the hero carrying Gwaelin is used at this time. In the remakes of the game, the Dragonlord has a special reaction if she is being carried when the Hero confronts him. In it, he laughs heartily at the absurdity, and 'thanks' the Hero for his kindness in bringing the Princess to him.

Tantegel Castle
At Tantegel Castle, Gwaelin gives the Hero an item called the 'Princess' Pledge' which tells the Hero his exact distance from Tantegel on the map of Alefgard at the time it is used. It is useful in finding the Emblem of Erdrick later in the game.

While at the castle, her highness occupies the empty space next to her father in the throne room. When spoken to in the NES version, she asks the Hero if he loves her. Answering yes triggers the short love music to play.

Ending
If the Hero rescued Gwaelin during the game, then she will be present during the ending and join the protagonist on his journey to establish his own kingdom. The Hero will again carry the lass away as he leaves Alefgard after defeating the Dragonlord. If the Hero is already carrying her when the ending begins, the result is much the same, though a single line is different.

Future
Eventually she and The Hero get married and settle in Torland. They have three children, who establish the kingdoms of Midenhall, Cannock, and Moonbrooke. 100 years later, their descendants become the heroes of Dragon Quest II.

Also, a tunnel leading from Cannock to Moonbrooke was named after her.

DQ11
Gwaelin appears as an NPC in the Tantegel section of the Echo Chamber. She is not the focus of the disruption in time, as instead her father has been cursed to be unable to speak.

Dragon Quest Monsters
The princess is once again found in the Quagmire Cave being guarded by a green dragon. Once the serpent is slain she will allow Terry to carry her outside, but upon seeing the lad is half her size she decides to wait for a stronger hero to arrive and sweep her off her feet.

Theatrhythm Dragon Quest
The princess shows up as a playable character in Theatrhythm Dragon Quest.

Dragon Quest Builders
The princess is an NPC in the final chapter of the game, having recited a charm to turn herself to stone in order to escape the agony of her Hero's betrayal and the despair the Dragonlord wrought once he blacked out the sky and banished the basics of building from those living in Alefgard. Gwaelin remained in stasis for approximately 100 years until the Builder revives her with a phial of Holy Water. When spoken to in the first section of the chapter, she will restore the builder's HP.

Unlike other characters in the game, the princess immediately recognizes the player as the legendary builder and encourages them throughout the chapter. She dutifully prays that Rubiss bestow her blessing upon the builder, which allows the goddess' voice to penetrate the miasma covering the land and speak with the player directly. Just prior to her awakening, she received a vision from Rubiss telling her that three sages will need to join her in Tantegel, uniting three divine artifacts to restore the land. These sages are the principal npcs of the previous chapters.

Quotes
The dragonsbane is a powerful sword in the Dragon Quest series. True to its name, it deals 50% more damage to creatures from the dragon family in nearly every game it appears, and this multiplier will stack with skills such as Dragon slash and Flame Slash. In later games, it can be upgraded to the dragon slayer.

Characteristics
There have been two distinctive designs for the sword throughout the series. From its debut in the second game to Dragon Quest VII, the dragonsbane consisted of a metallic blade similar to the real-world katar, a type of punching dagger from the Indian subcontinent that is held in the wielder's knuckles. The user's wrist was protected by an intricate design shaped like a green dragon's head with gold edges and red jewels set like eyes and two curved horns on either side. The blade has four grooves on each side. Although the weapon has some similarities to the claws used by martial artists, it was always classified as a sword.

Starting with Dragon Quest VIII, the dragonsbane's design changed to a conventional longsword, likely due to the fact that the games were now in 3D and the animations for swords were all made uniform. The new design for the dragonsbane is much like a scimitar, featuring a green blade with curved metal edges, a red grip on the handle, and a dragon's fang on the sword's pommel. The sword's crossguard also featured a stylized dragon's head with red jewels for eyes and two curved golden horns much like the previous design and the sword also had various gold decorations on the blade and handle.

The sword has appeared in every game in the main series since Dragon Quest II and has even showed up in multiple spinoff games, as well.

Appearances
Dragon Quest II
The dragonsbane can be purchased for 8,000 gold. It has an attack bonus of +50 and can only be equipped by the Hero, though it is merely a strong weapon without any extra capabilities in its debut.

Dragon Quest III
The dragonsbane has an attack bonus of +79. It can only be equipped by the Hero and Warriors. It can be bought for 15,000 gold in Samanao and sold for 11,250 gold.

The sword starts to deal extra damage in this installment, but instead of the familiar +50%, it instead deals 16~32 extra points of damage, calculated separately from normal damage equations. This means that the effects of oomph will not increase the range to 32~64.

Effected monsters:
*Blue dragon
*Boreal serpent
*Dragon zombie
*Dread dragon
*Ethereal serpent
*Gran Dragon
*Green Dragon
*Infernal serpent
*Xenlon

Dragon Quest IV
The dragonsbane has an attack bonus of +90. It can be bought for 15,000 gold in Rosehill and Riverton and sold for 11,250 gold. The Hero, Ragnar, and Psaro can equip it.
IV codified the percentage-based effectiveness of the sword, and allowed for the bonus damage to be effected by attack augmentation.

Effected monsters:
*Komodo
*Pteranodon
*Flying doctor
*Chillanodon
*Eoraptor
*Spitfire
*Terminonatator
*Podokesaurus
*Dragon rider
*Terrorflyer
*Wyvern
*Green dragon
*Damselfly
*Red dragon
*Dragooner
*Emperor wyvern
*Drakulard
*Woolungasaurus
*Rashaverak

Dragon Quest V
The dragonsbane has an attack bonus of +90. It cannot be purchased until generation 3 though, at Whealbrook and Precaria, and it's not cheap either (15,000 gold).

NOTE: The dragonsbane multiplies damage differently depending on which version of V is being played. In the SFC version it uses the standard 1.5 multiplier, 2.0 in the PS2 remake, and 2.25 in the DS remake. The likely reasons for these improvements is response to fan criticism of the Metal dragon, Black dragon, and Great dragon enemies obscene strength compared to average player level when first encountered.

Effected monsters:
*Sizzard
*Small fry
*Drag-goof
*Drag-goon
*Mandrake marauder
*Dragon zombie
*Black dragon
*Metal dragon
*Great dragon
*Lick O' flame
*Mechan O' wyrm

Dragon Quest VI
The dragonsbane cannot be purchased, but it can be sold for 11,250 gold or 11,625 gold after it's been upgraded. It has an attack bonus of +95 and a style bonus of +35 (+55 after it's been upgraded). It also does 1.5 times more damage to dragons. It is dropped by Hell gladiators. The Hero, Carver, Amos, Terry, Lizzie, and Goowain can equip it.

Effected monsters:
* Damselfly (also Flying)
* Gasbagon
* Axesaurus
* Noble Gasbagon
* Cutterfly (also Flying)
* Tyrantosaurus
* Hacksaurus
* Sea Fortress (ocean)
* Finned Fatale (ocean)

Dragon Quest VII
The dragonsbane has an attack bonus of +83 and a style bonus of +35. It can be equipped by the Hero, Kiefer, and Aishe. It can be purchased for 20,000 gold at Buccanham and the Dwarves' Den in the present and sold for 10,000 gold. It deals 1.5 times more damage to dragons. Dragonsbanes can also be won as prizes from the Lucky Panel at the Buccanham Casino.

Dragon Quest VIII
The dragonsbane has an attack bonus of +72, and deals 30% more damage to dragons. It can be upgraded into a dragon slayer in the Alchemy Pot by combining it with a mighty armlet and can be equipped by the Hero and Jessica, provided she can use swords. It can be bought for 11,000 gold in Orkutsk and Tryan Gully and sold for 6,000 gold.
Milly is a main character in Dragon Quest VI and its prequel Dragon Quest Monsters. In the former game, she is the second character to join forces with the Hero and in the latter her absence drives the plot forward.

Appearance and Personality
Milly dresses in a blue overcoat with white pants and blouse, and a breastplate from which her yellow streamers extend. Her accessories include a tiara with matching necklace, two silver wristbands, and two plain torcs on her upper arms. Milly is repeatedly described by a wide variety of NPC's as being very beautiful and elegant, traits that have caused her great hardship in the past.

Ever polite and compassionate, Milly keeps a calming, almost motherly air about herself that belies her young age. Though no true facade, this outer personality masks the scars of a harsh childhood, and hides a deeply rooted sense of longing to be close to others. It's because of the somber past that Milly possesses an indomitable sense of courage, as evidenced by her volunteering to assist in the attack on Murdaw's Keep at the beginning of the game.

This is not to say that the young woman is perpetually serious, however; party chat and scripted cut-scenes reveal a sprightliness rivaling Ashlynn's, with Milly often succumbing to bouts of laughter and beaming smiles. Her Lucky Dip antics further reveal a strong interest in dancing, as well as dabbling in amateur fortune telling.

Appearances
DQ6
Milly appears alongside the hero and Carver in the game's cold opening, about to take on the Dreadfiend Murdaw. Milly uses a mysterious ocarina to call forth a golden dragon to fly the group over the ramparts of the monster's castle and infiltrate from the heart of the building.

Before the battle can actually start, Murdaw ambushes the trio, separating each of their bodies into two essences and banishing one set into the Dream World. While the hero and Carver's Real World counterparts are encountered later in the storyline, Milly's Real World counterpart's fate is not revealed since she has already fused into her original state by the time she is encountered again.

Milly is reunites with the duo in Port Haven, shocking the men as she is the only person who can see them during the invisibility they experience in the lower world. Milly keeps quiet on the details as to not shock her friends, but assures them that she is their ally and will help them as much as she can. She brings the hero and Carver to Madame Luca, helping them to become visible in the lower world by accompanying them to the Lucid Grotto to retrieve a substance Madame Luca calls Dream dew. Milly then rejoins the hero's party, travelling the two worlds to help defeat Murdaw and uncover the plot of the greater evil behind the fiend. The group will encounter a swordsman dressed in blue at castle Arkbolt's courtyard, with the bursque man pushing past the party on his way. Milly will lag behind her friends briefly after this, being struck with an intense sense of familiarity and kinship with the man. During subsequent encounters through the game, she will piece together that he is none other than her long-lost brother Terry. After the events of Stormsgate Citadel, Milly confronts Terry and the siblings are reunited at last.

As the story of VI unfolds, the player learns that Milly and Terry both lived as orphans in Felonia when they were children. Milly was sold by her foster parents into slavery to the local crime syndicate, and thereafter to the King of Felonia as a dancer due to her remarkable beauty. Additional NPC dialogue indicates she was also locked up in the castle dungeon for a time by the previous Queen of Felonia out of bitter jealousy simply for being 'too beautiful'. Milly later escaped, and lead an unknown life before meeting up with the Hero before the first attack on Murdaw.

During the ending sequence, Milly returns to Madame Luca's side with Terry in tow, beginning her apprenticeship under her maternal figure as a fortune teller.
Remake changes
*In the Super Famicom version, while Milly travels with the hero and Carver to Lucid Grotto to retrieve the Dream dew, she remained entirely inactive until the they became solid through use of the dew. In the Nintendo DS version she takes part in battles before joining, though as an uncontrollable character.

*In the Super Famicom version of VI, Milly had an innate 15% resistance to MP-draining spells and skills, along with a total immunity to befuddlement.

DQ9
Milly is one of the guests at the Quester's Rest, greeting the player and giving them copies of her outfit as gifts. Players can receive an Accolade if they complete the cosplay.
Dragon Quest Monsters
In Dragon Quest Monsters, Milly is kidnapped during the first scene of the game by a creature known as Warubou, who takes her to Greatlog for an unknown reason. It is likely that the kingdom was searching for a contender in the Starry Night Tournament, though this is only alluded to and not outright stated.

Around the end of the game, when her brother Terry enters the final rounds of the Starry Night Tournament, it is revealed that she has been taking care of herself the entire time and, instead of needing to be rescued, has become the current champion. Her party consists of a metal king slime, a prism peacock, and a coatol.
A golden statue of young Milly appears in the internet communication plaza in the game, with a plaque that states she was a grand champion who won more than 30 matches in a row with her team.

Etymology
Milly is of French and Germanic origin, meaning both Strength and Industriousness. It is often used as a diminutive nickname of Camile, Milicent, and Mildred.
Terry (テリー Terii) the blue swordsman is a brash, arrogant character in Dragon Quest VI who joins the Hero's party later in the game. Prior to joining he is encountered several times throughout the story, beating the party to various goals and reaping the rewards for himself. As a child, Terry was the main character of Dragon Quest Monsters.

Appearance and Personality
Terry wears a blue cap to cover his white hair, a blue tunic with matching gloves over a black undershirt, and white pants capped with black boots. The tunic is partially covered with a section of Leather armour, and he carries a satchel at his side.

Terry is the archetypal "lone wolf" in that he prefers to work alone and hates to depend on others. While he is not strictly anti-social, Terry is very condescending towards others and speaks in a terse manner. This bellicose attitude stems from his profound (and well hidden) loneliness, as shown in his Lucky Dip antics. That being said, he is still a good person at heart and is strongly implied to have saved several people from the jaws of monsters during his travels, most notably Donna the barmaid from Port Haven.

As a child, Terry is much more kind and social. Throughout his journey in the Kingdom of GreatTree, Terry is always willing to help those in need. Unlike his older counterpart, Terry is eager to and willing to make friends with his companions and rivals. In addition, Terry helps others out of kindness and compassion, rather than any thoughts of rewards and making a name for himself like his adult self would do.
Clear
Appearances
Dragon Quest VI
startTerry is a talented swordsman, traveling the world to find more powerful weapons and to prove his strength. He is first met by the hero, in the town of Arkbolt, setting out to defeat the hacksaurus terrorizing the cave north of town. Terry is able to reach the monster first and defeat it in battle. Later, he is met in the Everfrost Grotto where the Sword of Ramias is found. Terry decides to leave the sword for the hero though, since it is all rusty. Finally Terry must be defeated in battle before the Cloudsgate Citadel can reappear in the Phantom World. Once Dhuran, the boss imprisoning Cloudsgate Citadel is defeated, Terry will join the hero's party.

Terry initially goes on his quest to become more powerful, because he was unable to protect his older sister Milly while growing up in Felonia. She was taken away by the king's men to be added to his "collection" when they were younger, and Terry was left critically injured after stabbing the chief assailant during the abduction. Clinging to life, Terry escaped Felonia and swore to become the world's most powerful swordsman to save his sister.
As the years grew longer and the battles more intense, Terry lost sight of his original goal, and doesn't even recognize Milly when he first sees her. Once Terry is defeated, he and Milly are reunited and reconcile.

After the heroes defeat the Demon Lord Mortamor, Terry and Milly finally reunite with their parents back home in Felonia. Depending on whether the bonus dungeon was explored or not, Terry will either notice the Liquid Metal Slime vocation scroll or engage Nokturnus in a solo battle, the outcome of which is not known. Afterwards, Terry will join his sister and the rest of the gang in observing the birth of the Zenith Dragon through Madame Luca's crystal ball.end
In the Super Famicom version, Terry joins at level 23 as a Gladiator with only the abilities of a Warrior, and not a single rank of Martial Artist. In the DS remake, he joins at level 28 as a Gladiator with both Warrior and Martial Artist mastered.

In the mobile device version, Terry joins at level 33 having mastered the Priest and Mage vocation in addition to those listed above.

Lucky Dip antics
Terry notably has some of the most useful Lucky Dip actions in the game, potentially using Lightning Storm once he reaches rank 8.
Remake changes
*In the Super Famicom version, Terry had a base 1(6.25%) chance to dodge physical strikes before his agility was factored in. This would stack with whatever evasive equipment or vocation benefits he possessed.
*In the mobile device version, Terry received +5 to his strength and +38 to his agility at level 33. This raises his level 99 strength and agility to 335 and 288, respectively.

Dragon Quest Monsters
startWhen Terry was very young. he witnessed his older sister Milly be abducted by a creature called Warubou to the distant kingdom of GreatLog. A few moments later, a similar creature known as Watabou appeared and took Terry to the kingdom of GreatTree. Terry only wanted to find his sister, but the king of GreatTree convinced him to become a monster tamer and win the Starry Night Tournament. The king stated that if Terry were to win the tournament, he would be granted any wish he desired. Terry then sets off to recruit monsters and explore the world. After Terry's monsters become powerful enough, he enters the tournament and ends up fighting against the monsters of the champion from GreatLog, who happens to be his sister Milly. After winning the tournament, Terry and his sister are reunited.

Terry's adult counterpart, as seen in Dragon Quest VI, is encountered a few times inside the final rooms of the gates. Although his identity is not revealed until his last appearance, it is hinted at through cryptic remarks made by NPCs that this mysterious individual happens to look like younger Terry does. Like in Dragon Quest VI, adult Terry is looking for the strongest sword to become the most powerful swordsman in the world. When conversing with his younger self, adult Terry is condescending towards young Terry for his usage of monsters rather than fighting opponents directly. This attitude changes into respect in the Room of Reflection where young Terry defeats Dhuran, a feat that adult Terry could not accomplish, releasing him from Dhuran's control in the process.end

Dragon Quest Monsters 2
startSome time after the Starry Night Tournament, Terry makes a visit to GreatLog. He can be encountered and battled in the arena after Cobi or Tara breeds with all the NPCs and collects 150 monster types. If defeated, Terry offers to breed with the playable character, thus making the game backwards compatible with the original Dragon Quest Monsters. His team consists of Watabou, Dhuran and a great dragon.end

Etymology
Terry is of Germanic origin, and means people's ruler. It is derived from the older name Theodoric.

Trivia
*Terry's design is based on the concept art for the Hero, who was initially designed to be shadier and more arrogant than his predecessors. Terry's smug attitude is reflective of this initial design intent.
*Terry is the only character to speak with an American accent in Dragon Quest Heroes. This is owing to his voice actor being a native of Virginia before moving to the UK.
*Terry gets a color palette reference for one of the 8 costumes for the Hero in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Said palette is given to the base of Eight.

The Prince of Cannock is a playable character in Dragon Quest II, and is one of three descendents of Erdrick who journeys to defeat Hargon after his attack on Moonbrooke, and is the second playable character added to the party after the Prince of Midenhall. He also has a sister who's the Princess of Cannock.

The Prince of Cannock's abilities are a mix between both of his cousins, the Prince of Midenhall and the Princess of Moonbrooke. Though he is physically strong, he is weaker than the Prince of Midenhall, and while he can use magic, most of his spells are not as powerful as those available to the Princess of Moonbrooke. In terms of statistics and spell choices, the Prince of Cannock has more in common with the other Heroes of the series.

Upon learning of the tragedy that befell Moonbrooke, the Prince of Cannock set out on a journey, first travelling to the Wellspring of the Hero. Later, he met the Prince of Midenhall at the inn in Leftwyne, where the two cousins joined forces and began travelling together.

Appearance and Personality
He is shorter than the Prince of Midenhall, but taller than the Princess of Moonbrooke. In the Japanese box art and all other versions of the game, the prince has shaggy orange hair and wears a green tabard with Erdrick's crest on the chest and an orange cape attached over black clothes. He also wears green gloves and boots, as well as a pair of goggles on his head. In the American box art for the NES version of the game, he is still wearing the odd goggles on his head, but his tunic has been replaced with a full suit of green armor. The Prince is also seen carrying a green shield with a red jewel in the middle and wields a rapier.

In the Japanese version, the Prince is described as a slacker, a drinker, and an overall really fun guy; however, in the NES American version the Prince of Cannock is reffered a studious young man immersed in his studies. This is presumably due to the heavy censorship Nintendo of America enforced during the late 80s and early 90s. Later versions are loyal to the Japanese script and refer to the Prince in the same way.

Appearances
DQ2
The Prince of Cannock sets out to aid his cousin, the Prince of Middenhall, when word fo the sacking of Moonbrooke castle reaches him. Unfortunately, the Prince does not stay in one place for long and leads the player on a wild goose chase until meeting up with him at the inn of Leftwyne

Later in the game in all versions besides the NES original, the prince becomes ill after staying at the inn in Beran. The other heroes can travel to a small island with a single tree tile upon it and retrieve a Yggdrasil Leaf in order to cure him and continue adventuring, or may leave him behind. Doing such only slightly affects the ending of the game, where the prince's dialogue bemoans how awful his luck is.
The Prince of Cannock can equip a wide variety of weapons and armor, though not as many as the Prince of Midenhall, nor as potent. When fighting Hargon, he should be wearing: Magic Armor, the Iron Spear or Falcon Sword, and the Shield of Strength. In remake versions of the game, he has access to a wider variety of equipment, such as Erdrick's Sword and the Aurora Blade.
He became available for download through DQVC on October 1, 2010, with the name Prince Princeton. When the Luminary visits Cannock and speaks with the king, the monarch explains that his son vanished in a puff of smoke the moment he declared his intent to vanquish the Children of Hargon, and asks the Luminary to seek him out. True to form, the Prince of Cannock is always one step ahead of the party, and the group must visit the Roamer Encampment, the Imperial Pantry of Parthenia, and Whealbrook before being told the young man is wandering in the Neverglade forest.
