The '''Tempest shield''' is a recurring [[shield]] in the {{DQSeries}}, first introduced in {{DQ4}}. Engraved with the face of a furious god, it blows away whole swaths of enemies with the strength of Zephyrus himself. While several guides state that the shield casts [[Poof]] on all enemies, the effect actually uses [[Whack]]'s instant death element to check enemy resistance. The confusion comes from the fact that enemies blown away do not give {{exp}}erience or [[gold]].

Appearing only in the remakes, the tempest shield increases {{Defence}} by +35, and can be equipped by every vocation save [[Mage]]s. Compared to other games, the [[shield]] has no extra effects aside from its high {{Defence}}. It also happens to be the most protective shield for [[Martial Artist]]s, [[Merchant]]s, and [[Gadabout]]s. It is found in the [[Romaria]] treasure vault which requires the [[Ultimate Key]] to access and can be sold for 577 [[gold]] coins, however it is not recommended to do so. In the {{Game Boy Color}} and {{Super Famicom}} versions, another shield can be in the final [[Treasures n' Trapdoors]] track at [[Jipang]].

The tempest shield has a {{Defence}} bonus of +50 and will attempt to blow away all enemies when used as an item in the {{NES}} version and a single group in the remakes. Found in [[Diabolic Hall]], and can only be equipped by {{Ragnar}} and the {{Hero 4}}.

The tempest shield has a {{Defence}} bonus of +35, cuts breath damage by 10, and blows away all enemies when used as an item. It can be equipped by the {{Hero 5}}, {{Parry}}, [[Sancho]], and select monster recruits. It is sold in [[Gotha]] for 4,700 [[gold]] coins.

Grants +35 {{Defence}} and +18 {{Style}} (with a bonus of +35 when equipped with the [[Sunderbolt blade]]), but has lost its elemental resistance from {{V}} and only targets a single group. The tempest shield is exclusive to the {{3DS}} and {{Definitive Edition}} versions of the game, where it is the reward for fixing the flute of revelation that was broken by a cursed [[Sir Roseguardin]] in the [[Echo Chamber]].

The recipe for the tempest shield is found on Iridescent Isle and is the reward for defeating the super-strong version of the [[Cumaulus]]. It increases {{Defence}} by +18, and requires three iron ingots, one gold ingot, and one chunk of mythril to forge.

==Etymology==
*In the original Japanese version of the game, the tempest shield is known as the ''Fujin's shield'', named after the god of wind from Shinto mythology. In earlier English translations, the shield was named the Aeolus shield after the keeper of the wind from Greek mythology, who was sometimes regarded as a god by classical writers.

Much like the [[Poison needle]], it has a chance to instantly kill an enemy in a single strike, but it also capable of dealing normal damage as well. Unfortunately, it cannot chip away at the {{HP}} of a {{MFamilies}} in the [[Metal slime family]]s 1 point at a time like the aforementioned dirk.

The Assassin's dagger grants an {{Attack}} bonus of +25, a 6.25% (1/16th) chance to instantly slay a foe, and may only be equipped by [[Mage]]s and [[Thief|Thieves]]. In the [[Super Famicom]] and {{Game Boy Color}} versions, an assassin's dagger can be found on the third [[Treasures n' Trapdoors]] track near the [[Castle of the Dragon Queen]] and the [[Shrine of Shackles]] in a [[treasure chest]]. In all other versions, there is only one in the game, and it can be found in the basement of [[Romaria]] Castle, behind a door locked by the [[Ultimate Key]].

It can be sold for 4,125 [[gold]] coins.
