Ortega is a character from Dragon Quest III. He is the father of the Hero and a famous hero in his own right. He departed from Aliahan at the king's request that he slay the archfiend Baramos before his evil machinations bring chaos to the world. By the Hero's 16th birthday, Ortega was believed to have fallen into a volcano and died, and so the Hero set out to finish their father's quest.

The Hero Ortega
When Erdrick was just a baby, Ortega left on a quest to destroy the archfiend Baramos. He is shown in an intro movie in III, fighting a dragon on top of a volcano which ends with both of them falling in. The intro is further expanded in the Super Famicom and Game Boy Color remakes, showing Ortega travelling the world on his quest before finally reaching the volcano and the fateful battle.

Prior to this, Ortega visited nearly every town and significant location that his offspring later would, fostering a reputation as an incredible hero. Of particular note is his time spent in Mur, where the village children were in awe of him and gave him the nickname Peredvizhnik (previously Papagatero and Pokapa). One such youth, Petya (previously Popota, even viewed him as a surrogate father figure. Touched by the kindness of the children, Ortega left Peyta his helmet as a keepsake.

After falling through the mantle after his volcanic skirmish, Ortega found himself in Alefgard without his memories. Learning of the plight of the people, he made his way to Rimuldar and took upon himself the quest of defeating Zoma, eventually making his way to Zoma's Citadel and confronting one of Zoma's underlings, King Hydra, just moments before his child arrives.

The fight with King Hydra would be Ortega's last, his body so badly burned that he was unable to see clearly nor hear. In his final moments, he regains his memory and with his dying breath tells the Hero that he is "Ortega of Aliahan and if you ever travel there, to tell my wife and son" what happened, that he's sorry he failed, and that he couldn't be there for them.

Fight Against King Hydra
Ortega is a non-playable character, as the fight between Ortega and King Hydra is fully scripted. This fight cannot be won by Ortega, however through randomization, it can last for upwards of five minutes, and ultimately will end regardless once Ortega is out of MP . In the original NES version of Dragon Quest III, after being killed by King Hydra, a special "Ortega's Death" theme played. However, this song was removed from subsequent ports of Dragon Quest III.

Resurrection
If the Hero and company defeat the dragon Xenlon, they are offered a wish to bring Ortega back to life. If this wish is granted, Ortega stays at the house in Aliahan with the hero's mother, and the player is no longer given free room and board at the house. This only applies in the remake versions of Dragon Quest III, as Xenlon does not appear in the original release.

Ortega has no memory of his death in Zoma's castle or his time spent in Alefgard, but is happy to be home. He states how proud he is of the fine young man/woman his child has grown into, and then quietly asks if there is a way to get his wife to ease up on the blabbering. All NPC dialogue, save for the mini medal collector and old man by the well, is affected by Ortega's revival.

Known visits
*Skyfell Tower
*Alltrades Abbey
*Mur
*Orochi's Lair
*Leiamland

Spells
Ortega is shown using these spells during his fight with King Hydra.
*Fullheal
*Zap
*Kaswoosh

Trivia
*It is highly possible, given the helmet's horned design, that this may be the Helmet of Erdrick seen in Dragon Quest II (and perhaps in Dragon Quest, as the hero is seen wearing a helmet but the game has no equipment slot for any helmets, suggesting the Hero was already wearing a helmet he possessed from the start of his quest).
*The helmet doesn't exist in the NES version. In its place is a novelty item called the water blaster.
*In the original Famicom version, his appearance in the battle with the King Hydra is that of a palette-swapped Robbin' 'Ood. In the English-language NES version, his appearance was changed a unique sprite based off of a male Warrior. The Super Famicom and Game Boy Color versions give him his own icon, although the Super Famicom ROM also includes a sprite for Ortega as a palette-swapped Robbin' 'Ood.
It is an immensely durable shield, easily among the top tier in each game it appears in.
The Liquid metal shield has a defence bonus of +60, and casts Snub when used as a tool in battle. In the remakes of IV, it also cuts fire and ice breath damage by 40 points.
In the NES version, you can get the Metal Babble Shield for 50,000 coins at Endor's Casino, and can be equipped by Cristo, Mara, Brey, and Female Hero.
In the DS, Android, and iOS versions, the Liquid metal shield is no longer sold at Endor's Casino, but there's only one shield in the game, and it can be only obtained by King Minikin if you have over 52 mini medals. It can be equipped by the Hero, Ragnar, Kiryl, Borya, Maya, and Meena.

The Liquid metal shield (originally Shield of the Lone Metal Slime) is a rather rare shield in the series, having been supplanted by the Metal king shield in V.

It is an immensely durable shield, easily among the top tier in each game it appears in.
Appearances
Dragon Quest IV
The liquid metal shield has a defence bonus of +60, and casts Snub when used as a tool in battle. In the remakes of IV, it also cuts fire and ice breath damage by 40 points.
In the NES version you can get the Metal Babble Shield for 50,000 coins at Endors Casino and can be equipped by Cristo, Mara, Brey and Female Hero.
In the DS, Android, and iOS version, the Liquid metal shield is no longer sold at Endor's Casino, but there's only one shield in the game, and it can be only obtained by King Minikin if you have over 52 mini medals.

To create a Liquid metal shield, combine Metal slime shield x 1 + Orichalcum x 1 + Slimedrop x 6.
To create the improved model, combine Liquid metal shield x 1 + Orichalcum x 1 + Slime crown x 1.

Dragon Quest Swords
This shield is generally considered the most difficult item to acquire in the game due to high randomness associated with winning it by playing Tombola. Note that the player must win the special prize twice in order to receive it.
Ragnar McRyan (ライアン, Ryan in Japanese, and first localized as Ragnar on the NES) is the first character that the player controls in the original version of Dragon Quest IV (second in the remakes as the prologue lets you play as The Hero). A soldier of the Kingdom of Burland, Ragnar is sent to investigate a case of missing children in the village of Strathbaile.

Discounting the prologue, and the fact that all main characters are present in Chapter Six, Ragnar is the only member of the chosen to make cameo appearances in multiple chapters (with the exception being Chapter Four).

Appearance and Personality
Ragnar is a very physically fit and muscular man, despite his age. He has tanned skin and dark blue hair, with a stern appearance and a large bushy mustache. He wears a pink breastplate with a long red cape attached and a leather skirt called a pteruges over a blue undershirt and shorts. His helmet is pink with a red plume and he wears pink gloves and pink shin guards over a black pair of boots. Ragnar also wears a metal armband on his right bicep, two metal bands on his thighs, and a single metal pauldron on his left shoulder. His armour is reminiscent of the kind used in Ancient Rome, particularly his Legionnaire helmet.

Naturally, he is far more concerned with improving his skill at arms than with scholarly pursuits. He is quite a compassionate person, as evidenced by his righteous fury against the demonic kidnappers and willingness to befriend an innocent monster when most would slay it. Ragnar's fellow soldiers look up to him with admiration and respect, and even the king places the utmost confidence in him. Though Ragnar takes great pride in his strength and skill, he is a humble man at heart and places the safety of others above all else.

Starting with the DS remake, Ragnar speaks with a Scottish accent (ex: "Och no! Hoo'd I manage tae get scrabbed right on the end o' ma couter?").

Story
Ragnar's chapter begins with him receiving a summons from the King of Burland. He treks through a cave from his hometown in the south to the royal castle; to do so, he is forced to travel through a cave, where he meets Healie, a Healslime who joins him on his quest after being rejected by several of Ragnar's comrades.

After reaching the castle, the king tasks Ragnar with discovering the cause of the sudden disappearance of many of Strathbaile's children. Ragnar tracks down the kids' usual hangout spot, and from here Healie discovers a magical "spring" to a nearby fortress, which several Burland soldiers have already located and are fast on their way to perishing in, if they have not already done so. Ragnar makes it to the heart of the fortress, and confronts the demon responsible, who unveils the Underworld's master plan of killing the Chosen before he can ever rise against their Lord. Ragnar kills him and rescues the children, winning the favour of the entire country.

Despite the accolades he receives, knowing the Underworld's plan Ragnar reveals he cannot simply stand by as darkness gathers, and sets out on a quest with Healie, to find and protect the hero.

Ragnar makes cameo appearances during Chapters 2 and 3. In Chapter 2 he is in the Endor Shrine at night. In Chapter 3 he can be found in the casino at Endor in which he is looking for The Hero.

By Chapter 5, his search took him to Mintos where a couple of residents would relate his visit to The Hero.

Sometime after, Ragnar headed to the House of Prophecy to learn more about The Hero, but diverted from that search when learning about the corrupt King of Palais de Léon from a prisoner at Havre Léon.

He arrived to the castle where he is about to take on the Marquis. After the Marquis is defeated by the Hero's party, Ragnar joins forces with the hero.

After the downfall of Psaro the Manslayer (Aamon in the remakes), Ragnar reported the victory to the King of Burland and later visited the Hero in Hidden Valley with the rest of the party.

Stats
When applied to the Dragon Quest III class system, Ragnar is a warrior. He has immense strength and resilience, but low agility. Even his character design is a variation of the warrior, which was traditionally in pink armour. He can don nearly all available armour and use most weapons, and should be on the frontlines of battle at all times--his endurance growth is so great it is advisable to set him at the head of the party until the hero obtains the zenithian equipment.
