The Nemean is a recurring monster in the DQSeries. It first appeared as a low-level treasure map boss in Dragon Quest IX, eventually appearing both as a boss and a recruitable monster in other games.

Characteristics
Nemean is a chimeric monster made from a combination of various other creatures much like a manticore. It has the body shape, shaggy mane, and a tuft at the end of its long tail like a lion but with an scale-armoured back and both dragon tail and wings. It has red demonic eyes. Most of its body, including its fur and scaled abdomen are cream-coloured, while the draconic features are taupe and its face, inside of its ears, underside, and claws are light purple. The webbing on its dragon's wings are orange. In battle, it can deliver vicious slashes with its claws and can breathe out intense flames, while its tough hide makes it highly impervious to status ailments. In later games, Nemean gained the ability to breathe out bursts of blinding light and call down thunderbolts.

Story
start
In Dragon Quest IX it is revealed, thanks to Fowleye, that the Nemean is one of the ten monsters that were created by Zenus remains (due to Corvus' attack) and also that the draconic lion used to be His "harebrained" head and in the Monster List is also revealed that "he could speak the mortal tongue, but had long forgotten".
Trivia
* In the original Japanese, Nemean's name Hanumān (ハヌマーン) is a reference to the Hindu demigod of the same name. He is a devotee of the god Rama and is also known as the "monkey god". Hanuman plays a major role in the Hindu epic Ramayana.
* Nemean's English name is a reference to the Nemean Lion, a creature with impervious golden fur that was slain as the first of the 12 labors of the hero Hercules.

Maya Mahabala is a playable character in DQ4, first appearing in chapter 4. Meena Mahabala is her younger sister, though characters frequently mistake her as the younger sibling due to Maya's more childish demeanor. She is a dancer and mage on a quest to avenge the death of her father with her sister.

Appearance and Personality
Maya is very similar in appearance to her younger sister Meena, but Maya wears next to nothing to better show off her body to her audience when she dances. Maya has long purple hair with bangs/fringe decorated with a silver hairpiece with green gems. She wears a silver bra, a long orange loincloth decorated with silver, and tan sandals. She also decorates her body with various silver accessories, such as a choker, bracelets, anklets, and an armband on her right upper arm.

Though during the game she is still grieving the death of her father, Maya is generally a very outgoing and playful, if slightly scatterbrained, person. Her occasional spells of ditzy-ness are the main source of the sibling friction between the girls. One example is Maya referring to a cow in Aubout du Monde as "Moona". Oftentimes Maya will be distracted by the luxuries a town or castle has to offer, prompting Meena to remind her sister the true purpose of their travels. As shown in her activities in Endor, Maya is overly frivolous with her and Meena's money. Combined with her addiction to gambling, Maya disastrously spends all their money on the slots, much to her sister's chagrin.

When Maya dances, she does so without inhibition, every movement filled with energy and freedom. This trait shows through in everything else she does as well, reflecting her impulsive and unrestrained nature. She has a noted gambling problem, a possible result of this trait. She finds towns without casinos boring.

Maya also has a flirtatious and playful side to her personality, and is seen to be appreciative of both Luceus and Aurora's physical attractiveness. She enjoys playfully teasing the normally serious Luceus. Despite her own coquettishness, Maya herself easily gets fed up with "eve-teasing men" as she puts it, and sympathizes with dancers who work in bars. Maya seems to be infatuated with bad boys, as seen with Psaro and Terry.
startDQ4 Chapter 4 is set with Maya and Meena performing at a town populated almost entirely by entertainers and tourists. They use their job as a cover and the town as a base to investigate the murder of their father, a prominent alchemist. Though they suspect his apprentice Balzack had killed him in order to steal the Secret of Evolution, they have nothing to back up their claim and keep it to themselves for the time being.

After following the trail through several towns across the entire country along with their father's other apprentice Oojam, they finally confront the murderer at his castle. Unfortunately, after his defeat Marquis de Léon appears and soundly trounces them in battle before throwing them into the castle dungeon. Luckily, its only other occupant points them to a secret exit and gives them the Boarding pass. The jailbreak is noticed by guards however, causing Oojam to hold them off while the sisters flee directly to Endor.

In DQ4 Chapter 5, Meena is attempting to continue her fortune-telling business but Maya blows all of the gold they had earned on their journey at the Casino, leaving them fairly stranded in the city. Luckily, the Hero 4 has been told to seek out his destined allies, and locates Meena and Maya in short order. Maya swears never to gamble again and the two sisters join the player's party for the remainder of the game.

Much further into Chapter 5, the party confronts Balzack at Castle Zamoksva. He has used an imperfect version of the Secret of Evolution to become Baalzack, but the party is still able to kill him, thus avenging the death of the sisters' father.end

Abilities
As a dancer Maya is physically frail, possessing practically zero Strength, and the lowest Resilience and HP for much of the game. The tradeoff is that she has fantastic Agility, good Wisdom, a great deal of MP, and a very strong set of spells, including debilitating spells like Sap, strong damage-dealers like Sizzle and Frizzle, and oddities like Puff! where she can transform into a dragon.
Maya is present along with the rest of the Chosen in the near-future version of Reaper's Peak. She is sitting in the bar, bored with how dull the town is and expressing her frustration that Meena has already started telling fortunes. After venting, she reconsiders and thinks that resting even in a boring village can be alright if her little sister is enjoying herself.

Maya also appeared in the monster oriented variant of the town as shown in the Super Famicom Version of the game. Unlike the remake she is instead in The Hero's house sitting across the table from a Feralball, wondering where her sister, Meena is.

DQ9
Maya appears as one of the special guests at the Quester's Rest in Stornway. This could be obtained when the DQVC was available using Nintendo's Wi-Fi Channel. When spoken to, she gives the player different pieces of her outfit for fulfilling certain conditions:
* Maya's outfit and Maya's bottoms - Received when first talking to her.
* Maya's bracelets - Received when the Hero is a Minstrel
* Sattriya sandals - Received after the inn is fully expanded
* Maya's mane - Received when it is the player's birthday
The player will receive the Dramatic Dancer accolade for wearing every part of the outfit.

DQMBR
Maya can be summoned to perform a special attack. After leaping from the wagon, she performs Dancing Dragons, a dance which summons two fiery serpents, which she launches at her enemies.

DQH
Maya is one of the thirteen playable characters. She appears to have been mysteriously teleported to the land of Arba and is found dancing by both Alena and Kiryl. Her Coup-de-Grâce is Puff!, which transforms her into a mighty fire-breathing dragon, a reference to the spell she learns in her original game. Maya uses Fans as her weapon of choice.
Etymology
Maya is a name found in several languages, ranging from Sanskrit to Spanish and Japanese.

Trivia
*There is a pair of sisters in Greenthumb Gardens who are a reference to Maya and Meena, in DQ7.
*From June 10th to July 10th, 2016, a dessert called the "Manya Tea Parfait" was available at the real-life Luida's Bar in Tokyo to promote the release of Dragon Quest Heroes II. Designed to look like Maya, it contains chocolate, milk tea pudding, black sesame marshmallows and is topped with silver confectionery candy. There was also a parfait based on Meena, as well.
* Maya's default outfit has necessitated some censoring in more recent entries of the series that wish to maintain ratings suitable for young children, especially in Japanese releases. To that end, her dancer's outfit has seen some alterations for slightly more modesty to comply with the ratings requirements for these titles.
Quester's Rest is a large inn located in the town of Stornway in Dragon Quest IX. It serves as a hub location for a variety of gameplay features in the game. These features include party creation, multiplayer, and alchemy among others. It is the reason Stornway is considered the central location in Dragon Quest IX.

Appearances
DQ9
Erinn's father Edwinn ran the inn for a period of time prior to moving to Angel Falls. During this period of time, Edwinn's wife passed away shortly after Erinn was born. Edwinn won the Inny award while running the inn and took the award with him to Angel Falls. Patty took control of the inn afterward and it proceeded to decline in quality.

During the events of Dragon Quest IX, Patty goes to Angel Falls to find Edwinn and ask him to return to Stornway. However, upon arriving in Stornway, she learns that Edwinn has passed away. Patty convinces Erinn to come and run the inn with some assistance from the hero and Edwinn's ghost. After Erinn takes control of the inn, its involvement in the story of Dragon Quest IX is completed. However, several bonus quests which are downloadable from the DQVC feature Erinn, Patty, and events related to the inn.

DQ11
The Quester's rest is the final area in the altar of the starry skies within the Echo Chamber. Erinn has been feeling down in the dumps lately, unsure of her capability as an innkeeper, with the guests disgruntled and Patty and Sellma unsure of how to help. Feeling she can trust the Luminary, Patty requests a favor: hunt down a personality changing book that will give Erinn's confidence a shot in the arm and bring her back to her peppy self.

The books, To Be a King, is found in the king of Gallopolis' chamber to the left of his bed. It is a glowing orange orb on the blue carpet, and can't be missed. Eriin flips through the pages, and applies the lesson's about a king's pride and duty to her own station and her "subjects" the guests. This epiphany rekindles Erinn's spark, and Patty couldn't be happier. The reward is a Sainted Soma.

Functions
Rest at the inn
At the most basic level, the Quester's Rest is just like any other inn. Erinn charges 3g per person to stay until evening or until the following morning. This amount is considered a "staff rate" due to the hero's familiarity with Erinn.

Party creation
Dragon Quest IX features the ability to create a custom party of characters to accompany the hero. The Quester's Rest is where party members can be created, added, removed or dismissed. This is all accomplished by talking to Patty over the counter. Bonus characters which are unlocked by completing certain quests are also accessible in this same location. Note that party creation is much more advanced in Dragon Quest IX than in Dragon Quest III. The player can customize the entire appearance of each character, from hairstyle to height. 3 characters are automatically created when the player begins a new game.

Rainbow's End Gold Bank
The only bank in the game is located inside the first floor of the Quester's Rest. It is run by Ginny and accepts deposits in multiples of 1000g.

Alchemy
:See main article Alchemy
Alchemy is available after defeating Morag in Brigadoom and reporting to King Schott in Stornway Castle. After this has happened, Erinn will find Krak Pot and place him on the counter on the first floor. The player is then free to use alchemy to create items.

Multiplayer
Dragon Quest IX has a local multiplayer mode where the hero can join another player's world and play collaboratively. This is accessed by talking to Pavo on the first floor of the inn. Pavo is a Celestrian and is invisible to the other inn workers.

Online shop
:See main article DQVC
The online shop, or DQVC can be accessed from the Quester's Rest by talking to Sellma on the first floor. This shop uses Wi-Fi to connect to remote servers to retrieve a special list of items which can be purchased from Sellma. These items vary each day that the player connects to the shop. However, on May 20, 2014, the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service ended for the original Nintendo DS, ending the lifespan of the DQVC.

Tag mode
:See main article Tag Mode
Tag Mode is another local wireless mode where players can pass information to other players. It is accessed by talking to Erinn on the first floor. Using tag mode, a player can "canvass for guests" or seek to add guests to his/her inn by encountering other Dragon Quest IX players in tag mode. Tag mode directly relates to expanding the Quester's Rest (see below).

Expansion
Expanding the size of the Quester's Rest is a local multiplayer feature directly related to Tag Mode. By adding guests to the inn using local wireless, the inn can be expanded 5 times from its default size at the start of the game. Expansion occurs for each additional 6 guests that arrive at the inn, up to a maximum of 30 guests. Above 30, the player must dismiss some guests from the inn before any new guests will appear. Each time the inn expands, Erinn will have a special message to say to the hero when he talks to her.

Guest list
This guest list is an important part of expansion, as it keeps track of who is currently staying at the inn. The guest list can be accessed by talking to Erinn. Using the guest list, the player can dismiss people from inn (send them packing), or upgrade people to one of the two available royal suites. The guest list is used to determine when the inn needs to be upgraded, so it is generally advisable not to remove anyone from the inn until after achieving level 6 of expansion. Note that once expanded, the inn will never "downsize" even if all the guests are removed from the inn.

Level 1
This is the default level of the inn at the start of the game. Both the upstairs and the basement are roped off. The room to the left of the main room and the royal suites are both open. The floors are all made of old-looking stone. The first 6 guests which arrive will be placed in the room to the left of the main room.

Level 2
This level is reached when 7-12 guests are staying at the inn. Erinn opens the second floor landing which consists of 4 bedrooms. The stairs to the third floor and the east doorway on the second floor are roped off.

Level 3
This level is reached when 13-18 guests are staying at the inn. Erinn upgrades the floors so that everything is hardwood. The second room on the second floor is opened as a large dining room.

Level 4
This level is reached when 19-24 guests are staying at the inn. The third floor is opened which includes more bedrooms.

Level 5
This level is reached when 25-29 guests are staying at the inn. The third floor library is opened and all the floors are converted to polished marble patterns.

Level 6
This is the highest level and is reached when the maximum of 30 guests are staying at the inn. The basement is opened along with the fountain which produces alchemy ingredients. The floors now have plush carpets.

Royal suites
The royal suites are a section of the inn which are accessed by elevator from the first floor.

Suites A and B
Suites A and B are reserved for common guests visiting the inn using tag mode. The player has the option of moving any 2 guests into these suites by accessing the guest list after talking to Erinn. Both suites are located on the same floor.

Special guests
A number of special guests can be accessed by connecting to the DQVC. These guests are characters from past Dragon Quest games. Each has a special suite on a individual floor. By talking to these guests, the hero can receive special pieces of equipment by fulfilling certain requirements. There are a total of 23 special guests which can be at the inn. These guests do not count toward the maximum of 30 normal guests which go towards inn expansion. The special guests include:
* Prince Princeton
* Princess Princessa
* Alena
