'''Coffinwell''' is a town in [[Dragon Quest IX]]. It is located to the northeast of [[Stornway]] within a region which shares its name. The town has many high, stone walls. It's design is similar to that of a fortress, and is shaped like a shield. The mayor's house is the highest house in the town.

The town is named for its role in the plot of ''Dragon Quest IX''. Its residents have contracted a deadly disease which is plaguing the entire town. The sickness is related to the nearby [[Quarantomb]].

==Plot==
When the player first comes to Coffinwell the inhabitants are being afflicted by a disease. The player, at the request of the Mayor, accompanies [[Dr. Phlegming]]; a local archaeologist to the nearby [[Quarantomb]] to find the source of the disease. In the [[Quarantomb]] the player finds that a Monster, the [[Ragin' Contagion]] is the cause. After the player has defeated it, Coffinwell is no longer affected. However Dr. Phlegming's wife, Catharrina died before the Contagion was destroyed. After her funeral, Catarrhina ghost will appear, and ask the player if they can help Dr. Phlegming's sadness by showing him all the people that he saved.

The '''Quarantomb''' is a dungeon in [[Dragon Quest IX]]. It is located northwest of [[Coffinwell]]. It contains the "[[Ragin' Contagion]]"; a deadly virus which when not restrained, infects the town of Coffinwell.

==Origin==
The Quarantomb was supposedly built by the people of [[Coffinwell]]. After the [[Ragin' Contagion]] infected [[Coffinwell]] years before the events of [[Dragon Quest IX]], it was sealed away in a jar in the centre of the tomb. However Dr. Phlegming suggests that this was not the original region that the tomb was created. The mayor of Coffinwell is the only person who has the key to the quarantomb.

==Plot==
During the earthquake at the beginning of [[Dragon Quest IX]] the jar containing the Contagion was broken, allowing it to escape and to infect the town of [[Coffinwell]] again. The player must enter the Quarantomb, and fight the Contagion while Dr. Phlegming repairs the seal on the jar. Once this is done the Contagion is trapped and [[Coffinwell]] returns to normal.

==Access==
The player must agree to accompany Dr. Phlegming to the Quarantomb to protect him during his research there. The player must also get the key from Mayor Laria.

==Features==
Past the entrance to the Quarantomb is a stone pillar inscribed with a poem, mentioning [[Sage]]s. Past that is a locked door, set with two jewels. The player must find the two [[Sage]] statues in the top left and right corners, and flip switches on their backs. The statues will emit beams of light which will bounce off various mirrors around the tomb and hit the door. The doors will then open and the player will be able to face the [[Ragin' Contagion]].

There are several [[Red Chest]]s and [[Blue Chest]]s around the tomb.

Due to the possibility of finding the [[Metal Slime]] the Quarantomb is a good place to train quickly during the early stages of the game.

'''Ragin' Contagion''' (病魔パンデルム ''Panderum Contagion'') is a boss in ''[[Dragon Quest IX]]'', fought inside the [[Quarantomb]], where long ago, it was sealed away by the people of [[Coffinwell]] to keep it from infecting the residents.

==Plot==
The Contagion was sealed in a jar in the centre of the [[Quarantomb]] years before the events of the game. However during the earthquake at the beginning of the game, the jar was broken and the Contagion was able to cause illness in [[Coffinwell]] once again. The player manages to defeat the Contagion and return [[Coffinwell]] to normal.

==Effects==
The Contagion infects people whenever it is nearby. This manifests itself as a cough, a high temperature and eventuall death. There is no known cure to this, but it will quickly subside when the Contagion is sealed. In [[Coffinwell]], only one person dies from the Contagion, although it is noted that if it had continued much longer many more would have.
