:<small>This article is about the enemy, for the monster class in Dragon Quest VII, see Slime (Class).</small>
The slime is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series. Introduced in the very first game, slimes have since become the series' mascot due to their popularity and iconic qualities. The basic slime has been in every Dragon Quest to date.

Characteristics
The basic slime is known for its onion/droplet shape, round eyes, and goofy, toothless smile, the former two traits having become the ones shared amongst nearly all other slimes.

They are typically the weakest enemies in every game, having no abilities and being easily disposed of, and likely the first monster the player ever encounters in a battle. However, starting with Dragon Quest IV, there will occasionally be stronger slimes that can call on others of their kind; they may form a king slime when eight gather and starting in Dragon Quest IX three slimes may join to form the slime stack.

In some games, slimes can be domesticated into pets and others have gained the ability to speak to humans in their own tongue. In recent translations, all slimes have a certain verbal tic of replacing certain words and syllables with similar, 'slimier' ones, such as saying goo instead of good, gooman instead of human, and slime instead of time, to give just a few (or goo) examples.
In a break from tradition, the slime is not the first monster given to the player, who is instead offered a choice of either a platypunk, mischievous mole, or dracky. The slime does appear on the first island inhabited by wild monsters that the player visits, Infant Isle, along with several uncharted islands, and is likely the first wild monster encountered in the game.
Slimes are the first monster encountered in the game aside from the monsters that the player has to choose from at the start of the game.
Trivia
*Unlike his contemporaries, longtime Nintendo Power staff writer (and current Nintendo of America localization manager) Alan Averill never had a photo of him printed in the magazine; instead, he was represented by a plush Slime doll.
*The internet MMORPG Kingdom of Loathing has a monster called Irritating Series of Random Encounters which is a group of 8 slimes. It is a reference to the random encounters of most RPG games.
*In an interview, series creator Yūji Horii revealed that his inspiration for this enemy was some "slime-looking enemy" (possibly the creeping crud) from the Wizardry series.
*Issue 277 of Nintendo Power featured a Slime in the Star Power section, where the "gooey blue mascot" had its career as one of many "hapless punching bags" charted, as well as its physiology analyzed. The section also showcased a handful of other types of Slimes, such as the Metal Slime and Slime Knight.

When the Hero meets the Zenith Dragon in Zenithia, he informs him of the situation, as Psaro the Manslayer is rapidly amassing power in Nadiria. He imbues the Zenithia Sword with the power necessary to defeat Psaro and shows the party the way into the underworld. In ages past he was the one to vanquish Estark when the fiendlord made his attempt to conquer the world, sealing the monster away in the area that would one day become Mamon Mine. In the intervening years he has grown weaker with age, and can not aid in the battle against Psaro.

Dragon Quest V
The Zenith dragon is first met as Dr. Agon, a man claiming to be Zenithian. After you free him from a perpetual mine cart ride, something he's been stuck in for the last 20 years, he joins your party. Dr. Agon will not participate in combat.

Eventually the party finds their way to Zenithia, which has fallen into a lake, and Dr. Agon uses his meditation powers to learn that the Golden Orb, one of the orbs that keeps Zenithia afloat, has been destroyed (in the beginning of the game, the hero acquired the orb, and it is later destroyed by Ladja). Dr Agon stays in the castle while the party finds a replacement gold orb. The hero ends up having to travel back in time to when he had the orb before it was destroyed, and he switches the gold orb held by his past self with a fake one. When the party returns, Zenithia is raised and Dr Agon checks on his friends.

Later, when the party finds the Dragon Orb, they return to Zenithia to find the doctor being questioned by real Zenithians, because they say there aren't any by the name of "Dr Agon." He will then ask for the Dragon Orb, and when you give it to him, he transforms into his true form, the Zenith Dragon. He will then carry the party to Crocodilopolis, at the very top of a mountain. He can also be used to travel over any terrain at high speeds, but can only drop off the part on flat terrain. After you defeat Grandmaster Nimzo, he will take you to many towns and let you talk to the people, eventually returning you to Gotha.

Like the previous game the Zenith Dragon talks extremely formal and with dignity, however it is later revealed in DQV that it's an act and he actually hates talking like that. In reality he talks crazy and eccentric. This was probably put in to surprise many players.
The metal king slime (originally King Metal; MetalKing / Metal King in later translations due to display constraints) is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series. Introduced in Dragon Quest IV, it is a metallic version of the king slime that usually gives the greatest amount of experience of any monster in the games it appears in, with very few exceptions.

Characteristics
As the name would suggest, metal king slimes are king slimes of a metallic color. Their crowns are different in color to that of the king slimes' as well, bearing shades of purple or blue.

Like all other metal monsters, metal king slimes have extremely high defense and speed, give an absurd amount of experience points when defeated, and often flee from battle instead of fighting. Their HP is much higher than that of most metal monsters, and they are also fairly competent when it comes to fighting, something that metal slimes and liquid metal slimes usually aren't.

Appearances
Main series
{{VersionTabs|Dragon&nbsp;Quest&nbsp;IV|
Metal king slimes share their first appearance with their variants, king slimes and king cureslimes. They do not appear until near the end of the game and are, in the original, NES release, the greatest source of experience in the game: they lose this position to platinum king jewels in the remakes.

Because their HP is so much higher than other metal monsters, it is usually recommended that Alena be used to fight them given her high critical hit ratio, which negates the monstrous defense of these metal globs.
The jailcat is a monster exclusive to the DS remake replacing the Baby Sabrecat. It's possible to recruit one shortly after obtaining the wagon in Fortuna; the jailcat is somewhat unique being one of the earliest sources of ice magic (which normally isn't available until much later), and can last until the third generation.
Trvia
The Baby Sabrecat was probably removed and replaced because it may be confusing to some players of why you are trying to help a Baby sabrecat while other Baby Sabrecats are attacking you.
Walkthrough
In chapter 2, the king of Endor is holding a tournament to attract powerful warriors. The prize for winning the tournament is the hand of the princess in marriage. Alena enters the tournament not only to prove her strength but to save the princess from an undesirable marriage. Alena is able to win the tournament by defeating five opponents and by the forfeit of Psaro, the only other person to defeat five opponents.

In chapter 3, Torneko is able to mend the bad feelings between the king of Ballymoral and the king of Endor. Because of his expert mediation, the king of Endor allows Taloon to set up a shop in Endor. Torneko moves into the shop with his wife and child. He later provides a set of Steel broadswords and Iron armours to the king in exchange for 60,000 gold coins. Prior to the casino's reopening, Ragnar McRyan is looking for a lead on The Hero in the area.

At the end of chapter 4, sisters Maya & Meena arrived here from Havre Léon after being defeated by Marquis de Léon.

In chapter 5, the hero meets the sisters in Endor, where they join the hero's party.

Remake
*Though they aren't needed after fighting the Abominable Showman, the remake gives you the option to use Medicinal herbs soon after.
*In the NES Version, the number of Steel broadswords and Iron armour you have to supply to the king is 7 of each. It the remake it's 6 of each.
*Tessie's vault only consists of gold storage due to the unlimited space of the bag.
*The Hero & company starts off here in chapter six.
Zenithia, also called Zenith Castle or simply Zenith, is the name of a fictional sky castle from the video game series Dragon Quest. The first appearance is in Dragon Quest IV, and the castle is one of several elements from IV, V, and VI which connects the three games as a distant trilogy; this group was often called the Tenku (Japanese for Heaven, or Sky), or the Tenkuu no Shiro (Castle in the Sky) trilogy until Square Enix branded them as the Zenithia Trilogy in 2008.

Zenithia is home to a powerful dragon, lord of the skies, and the winged, angel-like Zenithian people. Zenithians are an insular culture who avoid contact with those on the ground if at all possible, but there have been instances where they have fallen off the clouds by accident or descended to earth of their own volition.

Zenithia is one of the few locations in Square Enix's DS remake Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen to keep the name used in the original localization.

A castle in the Dragon Quest III remakes for Super Famicom/Game Boy Color is also called Zenith, though the layout differs from the castle from the eponymous series. It is unclear whether Zenith and Zenithia are one in the same.

The counterpart to Zenithia is Nadiria, the underworld.

Appearances/Location
Dragon Quest IV
In Dragon Quest IV, Zenithia makes its first appearance. The castle can be accessed by climbing the Stairway to Zenithia near the Azimuth, which goes as far up to the sky. It is directly above the entrance to Nadiria. While at Zenithia, the hero is given additional power by the Zenith Dragon.

Dragon Quest V
In Dragon Quest V, Zenithia has fallen into a lake south of Lofty Peak. This happened when the Golden Orb, half of a set of magical orbs that supported the castle in the sky, fell from its place. Once recovered and returned to the Zenith Dragon, it will make Zenithia rise again. This time, the castle can move freely around the sky, and is one of the methods of travel used by the hero to fly around the world map -- it's the only means of reached the secluded Talon Tower.

Dragon Quest VI
Zenith Castle is sealed away by Demon Lord Durran in Dragon Quest VI, and a giant hole is left behind in its place in the dream world. It can be restored to its proper place by defeating Durran. After Mortamor is defeated, the dream world begins to disintegrate; Zenith Castle is left as the only part of it that can still be seen, and floating above the real world it becomes the Zenithia known in Dragon Quest IV and Dragon Quest V. Implying Dragon Quest VI is a prequel to IV and V at least

Legendary Equipment
Main article: Zenithian Equipment

There exists a set of legendary weapons and armor hailing from Zenithia.

Most commonly known as the Zenithian sword, armor, shield and helmet; only a hero of Zenithian descent can wear them. The entire set is required to be allowed entry into Zenithia in Dragon Warrior IV.

These are also known as the Celestial or Zenithian sword, armor, shield, and helmet in Dragon Quest V.

In Dragon Quest VI, the sword is called the Sword of Ramias, the armor is the Armor of Orgo, the shield is the Shield of Sufieda, and the helmet is the Helm of Cevas.

Square Enix has released the Celestial Sword (the Zenithian Sword) and Sword of Ramias as part of their Dragon Quest Legend Items series - miniature collectible toy replicas of artifacts from the Dragon Quest universe.
In IV, he asks the party to defeat Psaro the Manslayer. In V, he offers to carry the party on his back through the skies.
* Orifiela (originally Lucia) - She appears in the game Dragon Quest IV, as a Zenithian who has fallen to the world below and was unable to return to Zenithia. The party meets her at the top of the Yggdrasil, and she participates in battle as an uncontrollable partner.
* Dr Agon (originally Pusan) - An enigmatic person who comes from the Castle of Zenithia. He appears in Dragon Quest V, and he may be more than he seems at first.
* King Zenith. The ruler of Zenith Castle in Dragon Quest VI. He is humanoid, unlike the Zenith Dragon.
* Sparkie (originally Doran) - A young dragon who is sent by Zenith Dragon to help the party in their fight against Psaro the Manslayer. He appears in Dragon Quest IV.
* Oopsy and Daisy - Both are elfin girls who first appear in Birdsong Tower in Chapter 2. They leave upon Alena, Kiryl & Borya reaching the top of the tower, and accidently drop Birdsong nectar. They appear again in Chapter 5 & 6 in Zenithia voicing their distrust of human, but concede respect for The Hero and company upon their victory of Psaro (Aamon in Chapter 6).
* According to the games, at least one woman from Zenithia became involved in a relationship with a human, leaving an offspring that is half-human and half-Zenithian.

Background music
* The theme for Zenithia was called "Unknown Castle" in the Japanese soundtrack for Dragon Quest IV.
* Dragon Quest V's theme was called "Heaven".
* Dragon Quest VI does not have a special theme for Zenithia; instead it uses the regular castle theme, "At the Palace".

Notes
* Zenithia might have some relation to Zenith from Dragon Quest III, being both ruled by a powerful dragon and both being in the sky. In fact, Zenithia comes from the word zenith, meaning highest point or state, aptly appropriate seeing as it is the highest point in the game.
**Conversely, its counterpart, Nadiria, is derived from the word nadir, meaning lowest point.
* The Zenithians could be compared to Celestrians in Dragon Quest IX, though they play a significantly smaller role in the world they inhabit than the latter does.
(in North America, released as Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Reverie in Europe and Australia) is the sixth instalment in the Dragon Quest series. It is the final Dragon Quest series title for the Nintendo Super Famicom and the last game in the Zenithia trilogy. It was the first game in the series to be developed by Heartbeat, rather than Chunsoft.

In July 2007, Square Enix announced a series of remakes of Dragon Quest IV, V and VI for the Nintendo DS. This marks the first time the game will be available on another console and outside of Japan. Prior to this, it has only been available through fan translations. Dragon Quest VI was the final game of the subseries to be released, following Dragon Quest IV in 2008 and Dragon Quest V in 2009.

In January 2010, the game was re-released in Japan on the Nintendo DS. On December 20, 2010, it was announced that Nintendo of America would be publishing Dragon Quest VI on February 14, 2011. The subtitle has been officially named "Realms of Revelation."
Plot
start

Dragon Quest VI opens as the Hero, Milly, and Carver approach Murdaw, the demon king’s castle. After Milly summons a dragon, the party enters the castle and comes face to face with Murdaw. Overpowering the trio, Murdaw appears to destroy each member of the party. The Hero wakes up in Weaver's Peak, and cannot remember anything before the fight with Murdaw. Tania, a small girl from Weaver's Peak, insists that he is her brother.

On his way to Somnia Castle, where information on Murdaw can be found, the Hero stumbles into a strange portal which brings him to another unfamiliar town. However, no one can see or hear him. After finding a similar portal, the Hero reaches Somnia and meets Soldi, the leader of Somnia's army, and Carver, who appears not to remember the Hero. To defeat Murdaw, they learn, they need the Mirror of Ra. The Hero and Carver discover another portal, which brings them to Port Haven, another town they can neither be heard nor seen. Milly, also appearing to have lost her memory, does see them and helps them become visible.

The party discovers a Somnia Castle in the “Phantom World” and learns that the prince is missing and that the Hero looks like him. They also meet General Tom, who bears a striking resemblance to Soldi. Gaining entrance to the Mirror Tower, the party meets Ashlynn, a woman who was invisible in the “Phantom World” at first, too, and together they find the Mirror of Ra.

The four of them travel to Murdaw's castle, in the original world. After defeating Murdaw, the Hero uses the Mirror on him. Murdaw then turns into the king of Somnia, confused and unaware of what happened. The king reveals that the original world is in fact the Dream World and the Phantom World is the Real World. Upon travelling back to the Real World, the King of Somnia thanks the party for defeating Murdaw in his dreams, but that the real Murdaw lives and that the party must travel to Ghent to retrieve a boat to get to Murdaw's lair. In Ghent, Nevan, a healer, joins the party and allows them to use the Ghent Clan's ship. During the fight with the real Murdaw, the Hero gets sent back to Weaver's Peak like before. However, with the Mirror of Ra, the Hero warps back into the battle and defeats Murdaw.

The Queen of Somnia tells the Hero to discover who he really is. The quest leads the party to Arkbolt, where a terrible monster is blocking a nearby cave. The reward for defeating the monster is the famed Sword of Thunder, but before the party can strike the final blow, a warrior by the name of Terry kills the monster, winning the sword. After travelling both worlds, the party learns that Murdaw was not the only evil in the world, having fought several other monsters that all seem to be connected.

In Sorceria, the party learns that this is Ashlynn's home. The elders tell Ashlynn that the Demon Lord is watching her and give her the powerful spell Madante to fight him. The party also learns that the only way to get to the Demon Lord is through Zenith Tower, but to activate the tower, they need to collect the sword, armour, shield, and helmet of legend. While doing so, the Hero meets his double in Real Weaver's Peak, who gets spooked, and speaks 'Y-You. Y-You're m-m-me!', and says that he must prove himself to be faithful to his family if he is to join powers. Returning to Real Somnia, the King and Queen tell the Hero that he is indeed the prince. When he fused with his clone, the Hero gained his memory back, much like Milly and Carver had done.

The party reaches Cloud Castle and meets Dhuran, who claims to have taken over the castle. He summons Terry to fight the party and then fights the party himself. Dhuran then reveals that all the enemies the party has faced were just pawns of Mortamor, the Demon Emperor. Milly reveals that Terry is her brother and Terry decides to join the party and fight against Mortamor.

Once Cloud Castle is back to normal, the party speaks to King Zenith who informs them of Mortamor's doings and how to reach the Dark World. Mortamor plans on merging both worlds. The party’s horse fuses with Pegasus, allowing the party to fly to the Dark World. With the help of two brothers, Krimut and Masarl, the party enters Mortamor's Castle. After solving many puzzles, they come face to face with Mortamor and defeat him. Masarl reveals that the Dark World is falling apart and Pegasus helps them escape.

In a similar fashion to Dragon Quest III, the hero's weapons and armour were renamed for this instalment in the Zenithia Trilogy. They are known as the Sword of Ramias, Armour of Orgo, Shield of Valora and Helm of Sebath. After the events of this game, these armaments become the Zenithian equipment and are renamed as such.
end

Setting
Like every other Dragon Quest game, the setting in Dragon Quest VI is very medieval, complete with castles, knights, and magic. The main world is divided into the Real World and the Dream World, each with a separate, but similar map. To get from one world to the other, the party uses special warps (such as in wells) or by ascending/descending stairs on the world map.

If something cannot be found in the Real World, chances are it has appeared in the Dream World, such as with Miralgo's Tower, in the middle of the quest. Also, another similarity to much of the series is the Dark World. This separate map features a dark island with a psychedelic sea surrounding it and some of the toughest monsters in the game. The final boss, Mortamor, lives there. Also, once Mortamor is defeated, the player can access the bonus dungeon and the secret final boss, Nokturnus.

Gameplay
As the sixth instalment to the Dragon Quest series, the graphics and gameplay remain close to the other games, with minor additions and upgrades. The graphics were improved from Dragon Quest V, which was also for the SNES, but had only a 16-megabit cartridge. Dragon Quest VI uses a 32-megabit cartridge instead. Navigation remains largely unchanged from the previous games and the turn-based battles are still only in first-person. The vocation system from Dragon Quest III returns, with minor adjustments.

Vocation system
This Dragon Quest, like Dragon Quest III and Dragon Quest VII, features an extensive class system, referred to as vocations in games. The way vocations affect characters differs from those of Dragon Quest III and IX; once the party gets to Alltrades Abbey, they have the option of becoming one of nine base vocation. Once a character takes up a trade, his or her class causes certain attributes to increase and decrease. To gain new abilities or spells associated with a trade, the character must fight a set number of battles in that trade in order to improve their rank. If a character masters two or three of these occupations by increasing their rank to the maximum of eight, they may upgrade to a second tier vocation. For example, mastering the warrior and the martial artist vocations allows a character to become a gladiator. Once certain hybrid classes are mastered, an attribute relating to that class will permanently increase.

After fighting a certain number of battles in a given class, the PC will be promoted to the next rank in the class, gaining a new title and some new spells and abilities associated with the class. Ranks within a class are indicated by a number of stars (★) in the status screen. Experience in a class is retained when the PC changes their trade, and can be further increased by returning to the vocation. Battles with weak monsters do not increase a vocation's rank; the monsters must be higher level than the character in question. But in the some of the later dungeons in the game, this rule is overturned and all battles will increase the party's experience.

Changing vocations will not cause the PC to lose any spells or skills from the old class, but special powers such as the Thief's ability to steal items will be lost when the PC is not in the appropriate vocation.

Not all characters are suited to every class, as their natural stats may be too low to be effective, even after the increase from joining the class.

Initial Vocations
*Warrior: Strength and HP go up while agility, wisdom and magic points drop. Several basic fencing skills are learned.
*Martial Artist: Agility increases at the cost of magic points, and melee skills are acquired. Additionally, the character's critical hit ratio improves significantly, by up to three times.
*Mage: Most attributes go down, except wisdom and MP. Attack and status spells are learned.
*Priest: Many attributes decrease, but the priest is less frail than the mage. Restorative, status, and woosh spells are learned.
*Dancer: All attributes save for style ang agility drop significantly, and a variety of status inducing dances are learned
*Thief: Agility goes up, but most other stats go down, and skills that help outside battle, such as Hawkeye, are learned. The thief may also steal an item from an enemy at the end of a battle.
*Monster Master: All stats go down except for agility, wisdom and style. Several breath skills are learned, as well as the puff spell. In the original SFC version, monsters may join the party when there is a monster master present.
*Merchant: Wisdom goes up, but most stats go down, and a random assortment of skills are learned. At the end of battle, a small portion of extra money is added to the party's income.
*Gadabout: Style slightly goes up, but most stats dramatically drop. Skills learned are quite random. Sometimes, instead of doing nothing, the gadabout will perform a beneficial trick, such as singing a lullaby to put enemies to sleep.

Hybrid Classes
*Gladiator (Warrior+Martial Artist): Strength, HP, speed, and defence go up, making this a strong class. Most skills are super effective against one type of enemy, such as Dragon Slash.
*Armamentalist (Warrior+Mage): Stats mostly go down and strong magic skills/spells are learned.
*Paladin (Martial Artist+Priest): Strength, speed, and wisdom go up and a mixture of Priest and Martial Artist skills are learned.
*Sage (Mage+Priest): Wisdom and HP go up and high level attack and healing spells are learned.
*Luminary (Dancer+Gadabout): Style is the only stat that goes up and an assortment of skills are learned.
*Ranger (Merchant+Thief+Monster Master): Speed and wisdom go up and an assortment of exploration and defensive skills are learned.
*Hero (Gladiator+Sage+Luminary+Ranger): This is the ultimate class and all stats go up. Several attack spells/skills are learned. The Hero of Dragon Quest VI only has to master one of those classes for Hero class to become available.

Vehicles
There are seven different vehicles in the game, counting the wagon; this is the most of any game in the series so far. Also, this is the only game in the series to allow the players to travel underwater.

* Wagon
* Ship
* Floating Island
* Flying Bed
* Magic Carpet
* Pegasus
<!-- Here are six; I seem to be missing one; perhaps the Mermaid Harp, or whatever it is?
-->

Monster Companions
Monster companions are treated more like human party members in this game; they stay at Luisa's Tavern and can change class like humans. But they will not join the party unless one of the active PCs belongs to the Monster Tamer class. Monster Companions are less valuable in this game, because there are a large number of human characters, who can learn most of the same skills and powers monsters obtain. There are a few powers that can only be obtained by monsters, however. There are 18 types of monster that can join the party; but the Tavern has only 15 slots for monsters, considerably less than the fifth game.

According to Famitsu, this feature has been removed from the DS version, as the Monster Master is incapable of recruiting monsters. It has been replaced by a system allowing recruitment of slime family monsters only through encountering them in towns/dungeons/etc.

Slime Arena
Monsters of the slime type can fight in a special arena; one chosen slime fights a series of three battles in a tournament (controlled by the AI), and if it wins, the party receives a prize dependent on the level of the tournament (which ranges from rank A to rank H). Winning the Rank H tournament twice will allow the slime to participate in the Championship battle.

New Features
* As in games IV and V, there is a wagon to store extra party members. It can hold up to eight additional PCs. There can once more be four PCs in the active party at once. Unlike in the two preceding games, characters in the wagon can cast spells at any time, even in dungeons where the wagon cannot go.

* Characters now move twice as quickly in towns and dungeons than they do in the world map. The screen no longer scrolls off the edge of a town map; instead the party will begin to move towards the edge of the screen, moving the message window if necessary. Doors will now open automatically upon being pushed against, if the player has the appropriate key.

* It is now possible to enter wells by examining them; this takes the party to a special map determined by the well. Some wells have Magic Well monsters which attack the party when they try to enter. Other wells may have additional wells inside.

* The party combat modes have been changed slightly; there is now a new strategy which causes the other party members to focus exclusively on supporting the Hero. It will also cause monsters to focus on attacking the Hero. The AI takes account of previous events in the round, so it is useful to have some slow characters that act last in the round. Also, other party members will automatically attack enemies' weak points. Because of these things, the AI is more efficient than a human player. The AI is toned down somewhat in Dragon Quest VII.

* Combat arenas now cover the whole screen, and the monsters are animated when they attack (although only the final boss has sound effects). <!-- In addition, each individual character of each command "We JUMON pep talk and how to nail and I immediately BOUGYO" (no particular order) and a six. また、各キャラクターごとの個別コマンドが「こうげき・じゅもん・とくぎ・どうぐ・そうび・ぼうぎょ」（順不同）の6つとなった。 -->

* There are two full worlds once more, as in Dragon Quest III, but there is no longer a day/night cycle; it will however become night-time during certain plot events.

* For the first time, there is a bag to store excess items. As a result, the Item Vault shop was replaced with a Bank that only stores gold. Items in the bag cannot be used in battle, but characters can add or remove its contents at any other time. In the original version of the game, it is not possible to use items in the bag at all; but this is changed in later games, including the remakes from Dragon Quest III onward.

* There is a system to memorize speeches made by the townspeople. Pushing a button after speaking to someone causes their text to be remembered. Then casting the Remember "spell" will cause the memorized conversations to be replayed. At higher levels, the Hero can replay more messages or delete messages from the list. This system is also used in the remake of Dragon Quest III, but not in any later games.

Charisma and the Best Dresser Contest
A "KAKKOYOSA" (かっこよさ, effectively Charisma, known as Style in English localizations) stat makes its debut, allowing the PCs to compete in a Best Dresser Contest. <!-- The "うんのよさ" stat was removed to make room for it. --> Style measures how charismatic and well-dressed the characters are; it will be high for attractive characters and monsters, and low for ugly-looking ones. Various weapons and armour can increase or decrease the stat; the effects of these equipments can themselves be altered at a Fashionable Forge. A matching set of equipment will increase the stat further.

The Best Dresser Contest has eight ranks, which the player enters in order. The contestant with the highest charisma will win the prize. Depending on rank, the contest may be limited to men, women, or monsters. To win a given rank, the player must enter a party member whose charisma (modified by items) exceeds a certain value; otherwise another contestant will win the rank and the party will have to replay that rank. The contest is one of the mini-games in Dragon Quest VI; the party must win the third rank of the contest because its prize is an important item.

Development
Production
The scenario designer, like always, is Yuuji Horii. As in all other Dragon Quest games, the art work and design are made by Akira Toriyama of Dragon Ball fame, who also worked on Chrono Trigger, Tobal No.1, and Blue Dragon. This is the last game in the series to belong to the Zenithia or Tenkuu no Shiro (Castle in the Sky) trilogy.

A prequel, Dragon Quest Monsters (Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland in Japan), was released in 1998. This game featured Terry and Milly years before the events of Dragon Quest VI. It was released in North America the next year, even though Dragon Quest VI was never released in North America. Along with Terry and Milly, several of the main enemies, including Mortamor, reappear, however, their previous roles have been eliminated, making them appear as just normal enemies. Mortamor and Murdaq (Mudou in the game) do appear as very challenging, very late in-game bosses, though.

Release
The initial release was delayed over a year, Enix wanting to further develop their game. The game was eventually shown at Shoshinkai in November of 1995. Dragon Quest VI was released a few weeks later on December 9, with the very steep price of 11,400 yen (roughly over 100 U.S. dollars). The game went on to sell over 3.20 million copies. Since then, in Japan, the game actually made the news in 2005, when a Japanese student threatened another student over an argument about what Dragon Quest is the best, the student doing the threatening favoring Dragon Quest VI.

North America
On February 12, 2011 Yuuji Horii visited Palo Alto, California for a special Nintendo launch event at Gamestop, where he signed autographs for the first 50 in attendance. Fans were able to purchase the game two days before the official launch date, affectionately referred to by Nintendo as Valenslime Day.

Nintendo also held a trivia contest via Twitter, with the winner receiving a trip to the launch event to be the first in line to meet Horii.

Best Buy also had special events to promote Dragon Quest VI and Dragon Quest IX on February 26, 2011 and March 5, 2011.

Legacy
Fan Translations
Several unofficial English translations were attempted by several different groups. While none of them have ever been fully completed, as of 2001, the online translation group NoPrgress has released a translation in which 93% of the dialog, 80% of the battle text, and 95% of the menu text is translated. In 2000, the online translation group DeJap released an incomplete translation, however, the project is currently dead. A fan translation of the DS Remake was anonymously released (for plausible deniability) in December 24, 2010.

Nintendo DS Remake
Dragon Quest VI did not receive an enhanced remake on a console until the Nintendo DS. The Dragon Quest VI enhanced remake for the Nintendo DS was announced in late 2007 by Square Enix and was developed by ArtePiazza.

On April 28, 2008, it was reported that Square Enix had applied for the trademark "The Realms of Reverie" at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, leading to speculation that it was the localized title for this game. On May 20, 2008, Square Enix opened up the North American site featuring the three Dragon Quest DS remakes, acknowledging Realms of Reverie as the official subtitle, as well as confirming a release in North America. The next day, a press release from Square Enix confirmed that the game would be released in Europe as Dragon Quest: Realms of Reverie.

Two and a half years later, on December 20, 2010, Nintendo of America issued a press release concerning Dragon Quest VI; the game would be published by Nintendo in North America under the name Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation and would be released on February 14, 2011. As with the release of Dragon Quest IX, the sword in the Dragon Quest logo was replaced with an ordinary 'T'.

During the following months, Dragon Quest VI would be released in Europe and Australia as Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Reverie. The logo used was identical to that used in the North American release, other than the subtitle, while the actual box art was nearly identical to that of the Japanese release.

The engine is the same as the DS remakes of Dragon Quest IV and Dragon Quest V, based on the one used in Dragon Quest VII.

*The monster recruiting function of the Monster Master class was removed, replaced with a system of slime companions that can be recruited during the journey. Some of these slimes, like the spotted slime, were not available in the original version.
*A new mini-game called Slippin' Slime can be played, utilizing the DS stylus.
*Enemies generally have 80% HP and give 120% EXP compared to the SFC version. Some enemy groups have been increased in number to compensate for this.
*Magic Burst's damage multiplier is reduced to 2x MP (similar to later instalments), instead of 3x MP.
*The hero's conversational memory spells have been removed.
*Party members' natural resistances are now gone. However, Lizzie and slime companions retain the native resistances of their monster counterparts.
*Re-equipping armour during battle no longer resets the effects of Sap/Buff spells.
*The layout of some towns and dungeons have been slightly altered.
*Amos now has a unique sprite model.
*Zoom can now be used to warp to both the real world and dream world versions of Alltrades Abbey.

Soundtrack
Koichi Sugiyama composed the music and directed all the associated spinoffs. Three soundtracks were released for the music of Dragon Quest VI. The first was a two-disk soundtrack, which included an orchestral performance and an OST. The second soundtrack was released on August 23, 2000, and just had the orchestral version. This version was released by SPE Visual Works (now Aniplex), and was named Dragon Quest VI ~The Dream World~ Symphonic Suite. This version was featured on Dragon Quest Daizenshu Vol. 2, which is a compilation of Dragon Quest music. A second Symphonic Suite edition of the OST was performed in March 2005 and released on July 19, 2006, also by Aniplex. The Symphonic Suite tracklist is as follows:

# Overture (1:20)
# At the Palace (3:40)
# In the Town ~ Happy Humming ~ Inviting Village ~ Folk Dance (7:02)
# Demon Combat (5:15)
# Eternal Lullaby (6:46)

Reception
A survey in the magazine Famitsu in 2006 earned Dragon Quest VI the #34 spot on the list. This is a much lower spot on the list than the other games in the series, showing that, although the game is popular, it remains in the shadows compared to the rest of the series, particularly Dragon Quest III and Dragon Quest VIII, which were both in the top five. Dragon Quest VI was one of the best selling Super Famicom games in Japan, selling well over three million copies.
In volume 81 of Nintendo Power, the staff wrote an article on Dragon Quest VI, hoping the game would find a U.S. release. They also suggested why the series might not appeal to the American audience: there is too much fighting and not enough adventuring. The game has not been released outside of Japan.

Dragon Quest VI was listed as #7 among the 10 Best Japanese Games Never Released in the U.S. by GamePro magazine in their May 2005 issue. Dragon Quest V, another Japan-only game, was also on the list, placing at #2. (the whole list can be seen here )

Related media
A 10-volume manga adaptation of the game was made by Masomi Kanzaki. It was published by Enix in the Monthly Shonen Gangan between 1997 and 2001. The storyline roughly follows that of the video game from which it was based but with several differences, such as the inclusion of the character Kizu Buchi, a spotted slime.

Trivia
The game is probably a prequel to at least IV and V here's why:

*The Zenithian equipment is a not even the Zenithian equipment yet
# Zenithian Sword = Sword of Ramias
# Zenithian Helm = Helm of Cevas
# Zenithian Armor = Armor of Orgo
# Zenithian Shield = Shield of Ende

*Not even the Zenithian castle ruler is a Dragon, rather a typical King. And during the game there is a dragon egg in the castle that finally hatches during the end credits that is most likely the Zenithian Dragon.

There are other minuscule details such as NPCs mentioning deserts and towers used to be there, geographic locations etc. however the ones mentioned above are the main big ones.
Dragon Quest IX massively contradicts these games that are supposedly thousands of years apart by having characters from I-VIII in the same hotel, however if one can overlook that as just for fun it becomes clear that the the Zenithian Trilogy is VI-IV-V (we know that V comes after at IV because of many mentions to the previous DQ4 hero) So we know the connections of these games despite Yuji Horii saying these games are not connected when they clearly are.

Implying Dragon Quest VI is a prequel too IV and V at least

Inhabitants
An inhabitant of Zentihia is called a zenithian; notable zenithians appearing in Dragon Quest IV, V, or VI are:

* Zenith Dragon (originally Master Dragon) - The ruler of Zenithia in Dragon Quest IV & Dragon Quest V.

Whack (previously Beat) is a recurring spell in the Dragon Quest series. It instantly reduces the target's HP to 0, causing instant death.

Though a potent spell, Whack and its advanced forms tend to rarely work. It is typically learned by Priests and other practitioners of curative arts, likely to balance out the power of life with a little power of death.
Healie is a minor character in Dragon Quest IV and the remake of Dragon Quest VI. He is a Healslime, a variant on the Slime monster able to cast healing spells, but unlike most Healslimes, he is friendly rather than hostile.

Background
Dragon Quest IV
Ragnar first encounters him in his chapter, at which point he joins the party. Healie uses his knowledge of local geography to help Ragnar in his quest to locate the missing children of Burland. Healie proves to be an extremely useful ally in battle as Ragnar is incapable of using any spells, so the only way he can heal himself without Healie's help is with items such as Herbs. Healie can also contribute to combat, though the damage he is capable of dealing is fairly unimpressive. As an AI-controlled character, his behavior is also somewhat random and unreliable.

Towards the end of Chapter 1, he states that he has resolved to become a human. He apparently continues to travel with Ragnar because they can be found together in Chapter 5, shortly before the fight with Balzack. Healie has succeeded in becoming a human through unknown means and has taken on the sprite of a bard. This, however, is the last he is seen in the game; after Ragnar joins the Hero's party, it seems Healie continues his travels alone.

Dragon Quest VI
In the DS remake of Dragon Quest VI, Healie can be recruited in Clearvale after obtaining the flying bed.

The Ra's Mirror, originally the Mirror of Ra and later Lar Mirror, is a recurring item in the Dragon Quest series. It is typically used to reveal a character's true form.

Origins
In the remake of Dragon Quest V a book in Heaven's Above Abbey called 'The Maiden of Abovitall Tower' reads "There was once a girl who climbed a tower where the Goddess was said to live, because she wanted to find out if the Goddess really existed. The Goddess put many obstacles in the young girl's path, but she courageously persevered until she reached the top of the tower. There, legend has it that the Goddess rewarded her by bestowing on her a mysterious mirror with the power to reflect the truth".
This is obviously referring to Ra's Mirror. The girl must have brought it back to Abovitall Tower for some reason because, you, later in the game go to Abovitall Tower and go through probably the same annoying puzzles she went through to get the Ra's Mirror.
Appearances
Dragon Quest II
The mirror is hidden in a swamp west of Moonbrooke. Its location is hinted by the ghost of the king of Moonbrooke. It can be found by searching the swamp tile where 4 bridges are visible on the screen. It is one of only 3 items to be found by searching on the world map (Leaf of the World Tree, sunken treasure).

The mirror is used to reveal the true form of the Princess of Moonbrooke. At the beginning of the game, she is transformed into a dog by a curse from Hargon. Using the mirror in front of the dog in Hamlin breaks the curse on her and she then joins the party. The mirror itself cracks afterwards and is no longer in the inventory.

Dragon Quest III
The mirror can found in the Cave Southwest of Samanao. Using the mirror at night on the sleeping king of Samanao reveals him to be a Boss Troll. By defeating him, the hero's party receives the Change Staff.

Dragon Quest IV
The mirror is simply randomly dropped by float-o-copiers and has no relevance to the plot as with the previous two games. Indeed, players can finish the game without ever obtaining it, let alone using it. In this game, it can be used to return float-o-copiers to their true forms after they Morph into a party member, though this is not required to defeat them (especially as the Zenithian sword can also undo Morph).

It is also buyable at the Immigrant Town's final form's casino for 10,000 tokens (Endor casino for only 2,500 tokens in the NES Version).

Dragon Quest V
The mirror is found in Abovitall Tower to the south of the aboreas teleportal, which is itself south of Heaven's Above Abbey. The mirror is used to reveal the true form of the Faux Dowager. Later, it can be used to force admirers to revert back to their normal forms.

Dragon Quest VI
The mirror is found in the Moonmirror Tower in the the Real World. It is used to reveal the Murdaw in the Phantom World to be the King of Somnia.

Dragon Quest VII
The Lar Mirror can be found in the Dark Palace near the end of the game. It is used in battle to change back creatures who use transform to turn into party members.
Interestingly, if used on Mortamor nothing will happen and it will not reveal his "true" form. This was probably just an oversight.

Story
Kon, along with Slon the Rook show up in the Ancient Ruins to defeat Pankraz. They are easily defeated, but succeed when Ladja blackmails him with the threat of killing his son.

Years later in Knightmare Tower, the full grown hero shows up to encounter Kon when his wife is captured. Though Kon himself is nearly invincible, due to a shield surrounding him, The Hero's wife managed to disable it and allowing for his defeat.

Nimzo (Mirudraas in old translations; Mildrath in fan translations) is the source of conflict and final boss of Dragon Quest V. As is the case with most of the series' villains, Nimzo is mostly referred to and not actually encountered until the very end of the game, though his pawns and powerful influence do well to wreak havoc in his place.

Characteristics
Nimzo initially appears to be an elderly, green-skinned demon. He is capable of performing devastating spells and breath attacks in either form and can also call upon Wrecktors and Killing Machines to assist him while in his initial form. He also possess an ultimate, grotesque form: a bloated, red demon with massive, wrinkled wings, four arms, and a spike-ended tail. It is said that he was once a human long ago, but has since transformed into a monster.

Nimzo's speech in the English DS remake is composed of a font that replaces the English letters used in the rest of the game with Cyrillic letters that resemble them, such as replacing N with И. The overall effect makes Nimzo sound incredibly distinct and alien when compared to other characters and even the narration.

When you go to talk too him he reveals that even Bishop Ladja is not important and his minions were "mere" players in his masterminded evil plan.

Backstory
In the original Super Famicom version, Nimzo was given no back story, though most people assumed he was a demon. In the Nintendo DS and PS2 remakes, 2 monsters, 1 solider and one book revealed he was in fact a human.

A book in Lofty Peak called The Will Of Our Leader revealed he is a deity born of "lowly disciples" implying he was born of poverty. The book also reveals he soon became the Monarch of Lofty Peak and was wiser then wisdom itself. Unfortunately he took the Secret of Evolution and turned himself into a monster.

The citizens tried, but failed to take the evil out of him and "Even now, he waits, where no sun shall ever shine, for the Great one to arrive, the one true hero".

Abilities
Grandmaster Nimzo is fought at the very end of the game, deep within Mt. Zugzwang. He is battled twice, first in his normal form, and then again in his ultimate demon form.

Nimzo appears as a Legacy Boss. His speech is written normally in this game, presumably because the Cyrillic alphabet is absent from this game's character set. His map can be dropped from Psaro at higher levels (and thus can be obtained multiple times).
Name
The title Nimzo goes by, Grandmaster Nimzo, is a stark contrast to the original interpretations of his name. The name was likely derived from Aron Nimzowitsch, a renowned chess writer and (unofficial) grandmaster by chess standards. The majority of Nimzo's underlings are named after chess pieces, and Nimzo himself refers to his overall plan as a game with his underlings being the pawns, so the name was likely given to tie in with these characteristics.

With this in mind, it is highly likely that the localization team had already planned out the majority of what they intended to do with Dragon Quest V, since Nimzo appears with his current name in Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, a game that preceded the release of the DS remake of Dragon Quest V.

Trivia
• Widely regarded as one of the most easiest dragon quest final bosses, he seems to have more intelligence then raw power.

Backstory
In the original SNES version, Nimzo was given the poor choice to have no back story what-so-ever so most people assumed he was a demon, however when the DS and PS2 remakes come out, 2 monsters, 1 solider, and one book, revealed he was in fact a human, destroying, former demon and entity theories. A book in lofty peak called "The Will Of Our Leader" revealed he is a deity born of "lowly disciples" thus implying he was born of poverty, however the book reveals he soon became the monarch of lofty peak and was wiser then wisdom itself. Unfortunately he took the secret of evolution and turned himself into a monster , the citizens tried to take the evil out of him, but failed and "Even now, he waits, where no sun shall ever shine, for the Great one to arrive, the one true hero.
Abilities
Grandmaster Nimzo is fought at the very end of the game, deep within Mt. Zugzwang. He is battled twice, first in his normal form, and then again in his ultimate demon form.
He'll always attempt to cast Kasap on your party. Since Disruptive Wave will reset this effect, he'll usually cast Kasap immediately after Disruptive Wave. He is considerably weaker in the SNES original version, but it is important to keep in mind that you could only use 3 characters in SNES version, (in contrast the the DS and PS2 remakes 4) also he seems too mediates (heals) a lot more.
Other Appearances
Outside his role in Dragon Quest V, Nimzo has also appeared in...

Dragon Quest Monsters
First official appearance in the states. Called Mirudraas at the time.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker
Appears as an S-rank member of the Beast family and has his current name; he appears as his monstrous, true form. One combination for obtaining one is by synthesizing a Drakulard with a Malroth.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2
Dragon Quest IX
:"Likes to kick in with Kaboom after taking the edge off his enemies by casting Bounce and Kasap. Some thought he could only command from afar, but he has more than enough mental and physical ability to rule the world." - Dragon Quest IX bestiary

The Secret of Evolution is a key plot element in Dragon Quest IV. It is said to be integral to the development of all life everywhere, but extremely dangerous if it falls into the wrong hands.

History
It was originally discovered by Estark, Lord of the Underworld, a thousand years before the game begins. Estark used the Secret of Evolution to transform his body and become the ultimate life-form, and in so doing becomes the most powerful being on the planet. However, although despite his power, he was still able to be sealed away by the efforts of the Zenith Dragon within a tomb deep beneath Mamon.

After this, the secret was lost until it was rediscovered by the alchemist Mahabala, father of Maya and Meena. Unfortunately, his apprentice Balzack murdered him and stole his research, using the imperfect version to empower himself and Marquis de Léon. He passed the secret onto their master, Psaro, the Master of Monsters. Psaro had held off on using it himself for fear of losing his sanity; however, this changed when Aamon had his lover Rose murdered by humans, causing him to fly into a rage and utilize the Secret, taking on a form very similar to that of the transformed Estark.

Unbeknownst to either Psaro or the Chosen Hero, Aamon had expected them to kill each other in Nadiria while he perfected the Secret of Evolution and assumed dominion over all monsterkind. This plan was subverted when the Chosen were able to resurrect Rose using Yggdrasil flowers and restore Psaro from his madness. Once the Hero, Psaro, and party confronted Aamon in his ultimate form and and destroyed him, eliminating the Secret of Evolution with him.

In the DS remake of Dragon Quest 5, it was said that Grandmaster Nimzo was an evil human that took the secret of evolution to become a god, Like estark he was sealed up.

Some demons in the dragon quest series (Mortamor, Orgodemir) can naturally transform without the secret of evolution.

Usage and Effects
The exact steps one must take to perform the Secret are unknown, but it can be assumed that it makes use of magic or is even a form thereof. The technique acts to physically alter a person's physical characteristics, generally making them larger and stronger, and often adding other bonuses as well; for instance, Estark and Psaro both acquire an armoured carapace. This culminated with the final forms of both Psaro and Aamon, who became a bizarre, towering entity with not only a face on the abdomen but a second head with three eyes.

For some reason, the Secret of Evolution requires the Armlet of Transmutation in order to work as intended; if attempted without it, the results are imperfect and often unpredictable. Marquis de Léon, fittingly enough, became a monstrous lioner, while Balzack became a huge and bloated lizardman. Each of these forms has a weapon unique to it - Estark and Psaro use two swords, the Marquis uses bared claws, and Balzack used a club - but whether this is an effect of the transformation or simply a matter of personal preference and common sense is unknown.

In the remake, Rose's tears were able to reverse the effects of the Secret of Evolution on Psaro, perhaps due to her heritage, her own unique magical traits, or her love for him. There may be other circumstances necessary in order to make this reversal possible as well.
