First appearing in {{Dragon Quest IX}}, it is an enormous frog monster with gun barrels on its body. Its name is a combination of the words "mortar", a type of cannon, and "toad".

The amphibians have white undersides, large mouths that are constantly turned downwards, and small yellow eyes. They use their shoulder cannons for basic artillery attacks or to expel forth sickening snot that can slow adventurers down. From their large mouths, mortoads are able to fire off powerful missile attacks as well, their stomachs displaying a countdown when it is ready to launch.
