Barbatos (vocation)

Japanese name: ヘルバトラー (Herubatorā)
Introduced in: Dragon Quest VII
Appears in: Dragon Quest VII

The Barbatos is an intermediate monster vocation in Dragon Quest VII.

Description[edit | edit source]

Barbatos is a human-like demon with goat legs and horns, along with a pair of wings on its back, resembling a bulkier version of the infamous Baphomet. It gives moderate boosts in Resilience and max HP and a slight boost in Style, with no reductions to other attributes. Multiple spells can be learned as a Barbatos. Mastering the vocation is required to become a Djinn genie.

Resistances[edit | edit source]

From ranks 1 to 7, a character that has become a Barbatos is immune to Whack spells, has high resistance to dazzle, sleep, Fizzle, confusion, poison, and Kamikazee. They also possess a slight resistance to Bang, Woosh, Zap, fire breath, Drain Magic, Sap, paralysis, and becoming stunned. At rank 8, the character becomes immune to Kamikazee and gains a high resistance to fire breath. Oddly enough, they lose their immunity to instant death spells.[1]

  • In the Nintendo 3DS version, a character will become more susceptible to confusion, paralysis, and being stunned, but has a slight resistance to Bang, Woosh, and Zap spells, fire breath, dazzle, Drain Magic, and Kamikazee, as well as being completely immune to Whack spells. At rank 8, they become immune to Kamikazee and are highly resistant to both fire breath and Drain Magic, but gain a slight weakness to Whack spells.

Requirements[edit | edit source]

In order to become a Barbatos, one must have either mastered both the Goodybag and Dingbat vocations or have a monster heart in their inventory when going to Alltrades Abbey to change their vocation. A Barbatos heart can also be won by playing the Lucky Panel game in the Casino at Buccanham in the present in the original Sony PlayStation version or from the casino at the Haven.

  • In the Nintendo 3DS version, it is also possible to acquire a Barbatos heart by creating a custom Traveller's Tablet with a Barbatos as the boss.
