The Grimoire is a recurrent monster in the Dragon Quest series, introduced in Dragon Quest VII. These evil tomes disguise themselves as regular books in bookshelves throughout the world and leap out at unsuspecting adventurers to attack them.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Grimoires are monsters that have disguised themselves as books, possessing strong magic powers. The incarnations of Dragon Quest VII have the appearance of a dark green book with their first pages and cover torn due to the age. On the front cover, a yellow eye can be found, and surrounding the eye there are black ritual marks. If you open these books, you'll found a demonic orange face, whose mouth is lined with sharp fangs which they use to bite foes, as well as a long pink tongue. In the 3DS version of VII, they move about in dungeons by flapping their covers like wings.
In the incarnations of the Monsters subseries the decoration is more complex, the covers now have a red demonic eye on them surrounded by red markings that resemble bloody veins and two skeletons. If you open these books, you'll be attacked by a monster that is summoned by them, the power of the monster depends on the size of the book. The normal sized book is the Grimoire (あくまの書, Akuma no sho), one slot; the medium sized book is the Grand grimoire (だいあくまの書, Dai akuma no sho), two slots; and the big sized book is the Archfiend's grimoire (魔王の書, Maō no sho), three slots.
