The Japanese name of 大けんじゃの杖 was translated as the savant's staff for Dragon Quest IX, with savant being a synonym for sage utilized to account for the letter limit in the game's text display. With the display restrictions no longer being an issue in Dragon Quest XI, the localization name was replaced with the supreme sage's staff.
