The Chimaera is a basic monster vocation in Dragon Quest VII.
Description[edit | edit source]
The Chimaera is a hybrid of a vulture with a serpent capable of breathing fire. This vocation offers a slight increase in Agility and Wisdom but slight drops in all other categories except for max MP. All of the abilities learned by the Chimaera are fire-based. As a Chimaera, the character has a slight resistance to Woosh spells and dazzle, but becomes very vulnerable to being stunned, is more susceptible to confusion and paralysis, and has a slight weakness to sleep, poison, Fizzle, Sap, and instant death spells. At rank 8, the character will have a slight resistance to Frizz and Bang spells, as well as dazzle and Drain Magic. Mastering the vocation is one of the steps to becoming a Dingbat.
- The Chimaera grants a higher evasion rate compared to human vocations, being calculated as rank 1 = 1/64, 2 = 1/64, 3 = 1/16, 4 = 1/16, 5 = 1/8, 6 = 1/8, 7 = 1/8, 8 = 5/32.
Monster Heart[edit | edit source]

In order to become a Chimaera, a character must have a monster heart in their inventory and go to Alltrades Abbey to change their vocation. A Chimaera heart can be found in the Sanctum of the Cirrus, outside of Aeolus Vale in the past. It can also be dropped by chimaeras in the Al-Balad region, or won as a prize from the Lucky Panel game in the casino.
- In the Nintendo 3DS version, it is easier to obtain a chimaera heart by creating a custom Traveller's Tablet as one of the monsters or as the boss.
