==Appearance and personality== Alena is a slender teenage girl who wears a saffron colored short sleeved minidress with a black belt, matching straps around her shoulders, black opaque tights and orange boots with matching gloves, sphere-shaped emerald earrings that vary in size, along with a blue cape and matching rounded hat. Her hair is a light ginger shade being long and ending in a flip, she has fair skin, rose colored lips, and her eyes are red with multiple eyelashes. Her design would sometimes vary throughout her appearances. Such as her hat and cape having gold details designs, her dress being sleeveless (lacking the straps), having a detailed silver trim, and red lace at the sides, donning black gloves under her usual gloves, her gloves and boots having gold and sliver details, and/or donning black shorts instead of her usual tights. With her cape and pointed hat, Alena somewhat resembles the female Mage from III, though she possesses no magical aptitude at all. Though regarded by most as a tomboy, Alena does not forgo her feminine side; she is simply too overflowing with zeal for improving her strength to be tied down by bothersome traditions and dictations of "proper" conduct. Nevertheless, she does enjoy adding the occasional accessory to her attire. Alena is a definitive spitfire, unafraid to speak her mind and being dead-set on reaching her goals. Despite her high aspirations, Alena is far from the stereotypically serious Martial Artist, and sees the world around her with the wide eyes of wonder befitting her age. She tires of being coddled by her father and the inhabitants of Castle Zamoksva, and is eager to see the world that exists beyond her bedroom window. Though very stubborn, Alena is far from thick-headed; she immediately jumps on board when faced with her destiny of helping the Hero 4 counter the threat the Lord of the Underworld posses to the world. Alena is shown to care greatly for her father and her kingdom, visibly being very concerned when the entire populace of Zamoksva disappeared, and when Kiryl fell under a deadly illness. Later, Alena shows righteous anger when discovering that the MFamiliess were behind the disappearances and develops an unfaltering resolve to defeat the Lord of the Underworld so that her people may return. Alena can also be rather oblivious at times, such as failing to notice Kiryl's crush on her. Alena has a very competitive nature as well as a love for fighting. As seen through her Party Chat, she is always itching for sparring opponents to improve her own fighting skills, which is usually the first thing on her mind. When first meeting the Hero, who is looking for the same Feverfew roots she is, Alena declares the search as a competition for who can find the plants first. Starting with the localization of the DS remake, Alena speaks with a Slavic dialect. ===Influence on the RPG genre=== Alena is a trailblazing character, being the first instance of a petite woman becoming a mistress of martial arts in what has now become a common trope in the genre since her debut in 1990. Prior to this women were cast as mages or priestesses in RPGs, with the exceptions being games that allowed the player to create their own characters from scratch similar to III's vocation system. Alena is the first melee-oriented woman in an RPG and the first to be given a pre-written personality by the developers. Her path would be followed by several characters in subsequent years, with the most prominent examples being Square Enix's own Ayla and Tifa Lockhart from the Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy series respectively.
