Three hundred years before the events of ''Dragon Quest IX'', Greygnarl helped bring about the fall of the [[Gittish Empire]] by defeating the black dragon [[Barbarus]]. When the {{Hero 9}} reaches the summit of [[Magmaroo]] to seek assistance from Greygnarl, the dragon mistakenly believes the hero to be a Gittish warrior come to slay him and attacks them. Greygnarl sacrifices himself to stop the attack by Barbarus targeting the village of [[Upover]].
