==Characteristics==
The Saintess shield has had two different designs in the series history. Both designs feature the design of a female holy figure on the front.
*The original design from ''Dragon Quest VIII'' is a round shield made from a light silver metal and features the design of a female holy figure on the front with her eyes closed and wearing a circlet with an orange gem. The female figure is encircled by an orange border and there are various runes inscribed on the inside of the shield. At each cardinal direction, there are also four winged designs with orange gems.
*The design introduced in ''Dragon Quest IX'' is a recoloured version of the [[Goddess shield]]. It is a kite shield made from a silvery-purple metal and features the design of a female holy figure with wings, her eyes closed. She wears orange jewelry and in her hand, she carries a blue orb. The figure is surrounded by an orange border. This design has been used in nearly all other appearances.
The shield is designed to protect the wielder from elemental attacks and in some games, may only be carried by female characters.
