At the start of the game, the hero becomes a mule by receiving the final test of character in the cave. The hero must follow all the signs and leave the cave. Other party members have a chance to be a mule when recruited as any class, depending on their stat bonuses. {| class="listTable" ! scope="col" | Class / gender ! scope="col" | Stat bonuses for mule (chance) |- | {{DQIII sprite|Warrior male Martial Artist male Merchant male}} | * Resilience bonus highest, 6–9 ({{fraction|2|7}}) |- | {{DQIII sprite|Warrior female Martial Artist female Merchant female}} | * Resilience bonus highest, 6–9 ({{fraction|1|3}}) |- | {{DQIII sprite|Mage male Priest male}} | * Strength bonus highest, 7–10 ({{fraction|2|10}}) * Resilience bonus highest, 6–10 ({{fraction|2|8}}) |- | {{DQIII sprite|Mage female Priest female}} | * Strength bonus highest, 7–10 ({{fraction|2|10}}) * Resilience bonus highest, 6–10 ({{fraction|2|7}}) |- | {{DQIII sprite|Gadabout male Thief male}} | * Resilience bonus highest, 6–10 ({{fraction|4|18}}) |- | {{DQIII sprite|Gadabout female Thief female}} | * Resilience bonus highest, 6–10 ({{fraction|4|15}}) |} An existing character can temporarily become a mule by wearing the [[ten ton toupee]] accessory.
