Phoenix can be found in the game data of ''[[Wikipedia:Final Fantasy III|Final Fantasy III]]'' as an unused enemy, but it made its first appearance as a summon in the 1992 game ''[[Wikipedia:Final Fantasy V|Final Fantasy V]]''. Phoenix plays a notable role in ''[[Wikipedia:Final Fantasy VI|Final Fantasy VI]]'' where its Magicite is described as a "legendary treasure" that could bring the dead back to life. The Magicite came under the possession of Emperor Gestahl and its legend spread across the world, gaining the attention of the treasure hunter Locke Cole. Phoenix has continued to make frequent appearances in the main series games and even regularly appears in spinoff games, as well.
