Tantegel is the capital of Alefgard, ruled over by [[King Lorik]]. The kingdom has been thrown into chaos with the theft of the [[Sphere of Light]] by the [[Dragonlord]], unleashing a horde of monsters across the archipelago. Adding insult to injury is the kidnapping of [[Princess Gawelin]], also by the sovereign of serpents.

The {{Hero 1}} begins his quest within the throne room of Tantegel castle where he is debriefed on the situation by King Lorik in a subtle tutorial designed for the player to become familiar with all non-battle options of the [[Command Menu]]; the player cannot leave the throne room without learning to speak with NPCs, examine treasure chests, use items, and descend the stairs. Beyond this Tantegel is a location of central importance for many reasons:

*It is the only location where the player can save the game.
*It is the only source of free MP-recovery in the game, via speaking to the resident sage.
*It contains one of the essential items to complete the game, the ([[sunstone]]).
*It is the location the {{Hero 1}} returns to after completing the game.
