In the original {{NES}} version, a Whackolyte (known as "Evil Clown" in the old localization) can be fought in [[Midenhall]] Castle. It is an optional fight that the player can elect to skip if they so choose. It carries the [[Lightning staff]] when the player defeats it. In the remakes, they were replaced by a [[Wrecktor (Dragon Quest VII)|Wrecktor]] (known as "Magus" in the old localization of {{II}} for {{Game Boy Color}}).
