At the start of the game, the hero becomes a wimp by receiving the final test of character in the well. The hero must leave the test after breathing fire on three to six NPCs, including the mother, the nun, or both, but must not breathe fire on the child. Alternatively, the hero can breathe fire on any seven to nine NPCs, but must not breathe fire on the child. All NPCs, including the required one at the well and the dog, count toward this total. Other party members have a chance to be a wimp when talent scouted at [[Patty's Party Planning Place]] as a warrior, martial artist, mage, or priest, depending on their stat bonuses. {| class="listTable" ! scope="col" | Class / gender ! scope="col" | Stat bonuses for wimp (chance) |- | {{DQIII sprite|Warrior male Martial Artist male}} | * Wisdom bonus highest, 6–9 ({{fraction|1|3}}) |- | {{DQIII sprite|Warrior female Martial Artist female}} | * Wisdom bonus highest, 6–9 ({{fraction|3|13}}) |- | {{DQIII sprite|Mage male Mage female Priest male Priest female}} | * Resilience bonus highest, ≤5, strength, agility, or luck bonus second ({{fraction|3|14}}) * Strength bonus highest, ≤6, wisdom bonus second ({{fraction|1|5}}) * Luck bonus highest, ≤5 ({{fraction|5|37}}) * Wisdom bonus highest, 6–9 ({{fraction|1|9}}) * Agility bonus highest, ≤7, resilience or luck bonus second ({{fraction|2|23}}) |} An existing character becomes a wimp temporarily while wearing the cursed [[cower ring]] accessory.
