In the ''Dragon Quest'' series, '''Appraisal''' is a function that allows a character to examine and identify the properties of any item or equipment. While normally the expertise of a [[merchant]] (like [[Torneko]]), in some installments the [[Peep]] spell enables this function to be performed.

Appraisal indicates any hidden effects of equipment, as well as party members that can equip it, and resale price.

Appraisal can be performed by any merchant in the party.

Appraisal has been removed due to the game listing the description, attributes, and other values of items and equipment via the menu.

[[Torneko Taloon]] can appraise any item during his chapter and later when he joins the party in Chapter 5. He also has some personal commentary for each individual item (including [[Horse manure|horse manure]]) he examines.

Once the [[Hero (Dragon Quest V)|Hero]] learns [[Peep]] at level 12, he can appraise any item in inventory. No MP is expended for function.

==={{DQ6}}===
A party member can start appraising after reaching first rank of the merchant class.
