The Boppin' badger is a recurring monster in the series, first appearing in Dragon Quest IX. It is based on the mythical tanuki of Japanese folklore. ==Characteristics== Boppin' badgers are anthropomorphic badgers that stand on their hind legs, carrying a huge leaf in their right hands. Most of their fur is grey, with darker brown fur around their eyes that give them a masked appearance. Around their necks, they wear a necklace of acorns. The badgers are known for their captivating dancing in battle, attempting to get opponents into the groove as well. The badgers’ pelts are valued for their use in alchemy. ==Appearances== ===DQ9=== {{DQ9EnemyNew |name=Boppin' badger |kanji=ポンポコだぬき |romaji=Ponpoko danuki |bestiaryNumber=#023 |family=Beast |description=Badgers with large leaves and the gift of the groove. Tanuki is often translated into "badger" or "raccoon" in English, but the two are unrelated animals that share superficially similar appearances. * The ponpoko (ポンポコ) in the monster's Japanese name is an onomatopoeia for the sound made by a tanuki beating their round belly drum.<ref>[https://www.nishikata-eiga.com/2013/10/belly-drum-dance-at-shojoji-temple-c1933.html "Belly Drum Dance at Shojoji Temple (證城寺の狸囃子, c.1933)".
