The '''Boppin' badger''' is a recurring monster in the series, first appearing in {{Dragon Quest IX}}. It is based on the mythical tanuki of Japanese folklore.

==Characteristics==
Boppin' badgers are anthropomorphic [[Beast family|badger]]s that stand on their hind legs, carrying a huge leaf in their right hands. Most of their fur is grey, with darker brown fur around their eyes that give them a masked appearance. Around their necks, they wear a necklace of acorns. The badgers are known for their captivating dancing in battle, attempting to get opponents into the groove as well. The badgers’ pelts are valued for their use in [[alchemy]].

* The monster and the rest of its kin has been changed to badgers in English and most other translations of the game, but they are based on the [[Wikipedia:Japanese raccoon dog|Japanese raccoon dog]], or tanuki (たぬき), that features significantly in folklore and myths. Tanuki is often translated into "badger" or "raccoon" in English, but the two are unrelated animals that share superficially similar appearances.
