==Characteristics==
There have been two designs for the dragonsbane in the series:
*The original design is a metallic blade similar to the real-world katar, a type of punching dagger from the Indian subcontinent that is held in the wielder's knuckles. The user's wrist is protected by a guard shaped like a dragon's head, with gold details, red jewels set like eyes, and a pair of curved horns. The blade has four grooves on each side. In the ''HD-2D Remake'' games, its name was changed to '''Dragonsbane claws''' and it is classified as a [[Claw (weapon type)|claw]].
*The design introduced in ''Dragon Quest VIII'' is closer to a conventional longsword that shares animations with all other swords. This version is similar in appearance to a scimitar, featuring a green blade with curved metal edges, a red grip on the handle, and a dragon's fang on the sword's pommel. The sword's crossguard is a stylised dragon's head with red jewels for eyes and two curved golden horns much like the previous design and the sword also had various gold decorations on the blade and handle.

True to its name, it deals extra damage to monsters of the [[Dragon family]] and stacks with skills such as [[Dragon Slash]] and [[Flame Slash]].

The Dragonsbane appears in Chapter 77: "Super Dragon Army, Fierce Attack!!!". It is a famous weapon, capable of piercing dragon scales, and is being auctioned off at Bengarna's department store. The sword is said to be valued at over 15,000 gold, matching its price from the then-recently released ''Dragon Quest IV''. However, just as the auction for the dragonsbane is about to begin, an army of [[Hydra|Hydras]] and [[Green dragon|Green dragons]] attacks Bengarna.
