The '''fencing fox''' is a recurring monster in the {{DQSeries}}, first appearing in ''[[Dragon Quest VIII]]''. It is an anthropomorphic fox dressed as a foppish fencer.

==Characteristics==
Fencing foxes are [[Beast family|vulpine]] swordsmen dressed in the manner of an aristocrat. They wear a green and orange striped doublet with a ruff and a long orange cape around their necks, dark blue rounded hose, fuchsia boots and gloves, and a fuchsia cavalier with a long plume on their heads. They wield silver rapiers in their right hands. Along with their fencing, the foxes can cast some magic in battle, as well.

==Etymology==
The fencing fox's original Japanese name, saber kitsune (サーベルきつね, ''Sāberu kitsune''), references the [[Wikipedia:Kitsune|kitsune]] from Japanese mythology, a legendary fox that possesses supernatural abilities. They are able to shapeshift themselves into humans in order t trick others.
