In the original Japanese, the flintstone is known as a ''tsukemono ishi'' (つけもの石) or pickling stone, which is a heavy rock used to apply pressure in a pickle press, known as a ''tsukemonoki'' (漬物器). It is used to preserve vegetables, known as ''[[Wikipedia:tsukemono|tsukemono]]'' (漬物, lit. "pickled things") and has been traditionally done in Japan before refrigeration.
