Not to be confused with the Monster Master vocation, which does not allow players to recruit monsters.
The Monster Wrangler (まもの使い or まもの 用, Mamono Tsukai) is a vocation in the series. Monster wranglers specialise in training monsters and borrowing their skills. What makes the monster wrangler vocation unique is it's ability to tame monsters. This vocation is usually mixed up with two similar but different vocations: Monster Master and Monster Masher. ==Monster master, wrangler and masher== There is some confusion regarding the monster-focused vocations: Dragon Quest VI for the Super Famicom had the まもの使い (Mamono Tsukai) vocation, then the seventh game has 魔物ハンター (Mamono Hantā), it was changed to 魔物マスター (Mamono Masutā) in the Nintendo DS remake of DQVI and it's subsequent ports, the まもの使い (Mamono Tsukai) vocation returned in the tenth game, then まものマスター (Mamono Masutā) was used in both Stars and Walk, then まもの使い (Mamono Tsukai) was used again in DQIII HD-2D and DQX Offline. In the English side there has been consistency in the translations for the main series since Square Enix started using the Dragon Quest naming conventions: まもの使い is Monster Wrangler, 魔物ハンター is Monster Masher, and 魔物マスター is Monster Master. (Monster Masher used to be known as "Tamer" on the PS1 translation of Dragon Warrior VII). Due to all these vocations being monster-focused, most people tend to mix them up, despite them being different: Monster Wranglers can scout monsters, while Monster Masters cannot, despite both of them using similar fighting styles and skills. Monster Masher, while similar, tames monsters and sends them to the Monster Meadows. In Dragon Quest Tact, young Terry introduces himself as being a "Monster Scout", and the Hero 5 of the fifth game has the title of "Legendary Monster Wrangler". Later on, the game introduced a unit based on the female Monster Wrangler from Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. ==Appearances== ===DQ3HD=== The Monster Wrangler was added as a vocation in this version of the game, utilising the design seen in Dragon Quest X. Unlike all other vocation in the game, they have two ways of learning new skills: by leveling up, and by scouting a certain amount of monsters around the world. ====Stats==== Calculated using the Everyman personality. {| style="width:65%; height:100px; text-align:center" border="1" |-<---!Headings are up first.!---> style="font-weight:bold; background:#439CD0" !colspan="3"| Appearance B !! colspan="2"| Appearance A |- ! footer}} *♥ denotes equipment exclusive to Appearance B. ===DQ6 (Super Famicom version)=== This vocation only appears in the SFC version of Dragon Quest VI. In the remakes, it's replaced by the Monster Master vocation and the recruitable slime buddies. Both appear similar, but they are slightly different: the wranglers can scout monsters while the masters cannot. Mastering this vocation alongside with Thief and Merchant unlocks the Ranger vocation. The Monster Wrangler vocation takes 164 battles to master, and reduces strength by 15%, the resilience by 20%, the max HP by 20%, and the max MP by 30%. While its a net negative on the stats side, the bonus of using this vocation is being able to scout monsters. Monster scouting is randomly decided at the end of the battle. Ranking up the vocation allows the player to have access to a bigger variety of monsters: {| class="wikitable" |- ! Rank !! Skills learnt !! Number of battles (total) !! The conceptual art depicts a boy wearing an outfit consisting entirely of animal hides and holding a gnarled staff. This design was later repurposed as the vocational outfit for monster wranglers in Dragon Quest X. ===DQ10=== The Monster Wrangler vocation returns to the main series with the first expansion of Dragon Quest X, exaclty in the 2.0 patch. The vocation is a much more physically robust profession, boasting the third highest Strength and fourth highest HP of all vocations. This is balanced by having poor Agility and max MP. It is one of the two vocations capable of scouting monsters as companions, along with the Item Master. They can scout: Slime, Teeny Sanguini, Jailcat, Healslime, Slime Knight, Chimaera, Meowgician, Mandrake Major, Imp, Hacksaurus, Brownie, Small Fry, Dracky, Mischievous Mole, and Great Sabrecat. The "Monster Wrangler" designation officially replaced the older Monster Master starting in Dragon Quest Tact, and the term was given wider exposure to English-speaking fans through DQM3 in 2023, with the adolescent Psaro C being forced to take up the vocation due to the curse placed upon him by his father Randolfo. ===DQTact=== The Hero 5 of Dragon Quest V was given the title of "Legendary Monster Wrangler" for his appearance as a unit in Tact, marking the first appearance of the term in English media. On July 25th, 2025 the unit "Monster Wrangler (Female)" (まもの使い(女)) was added into the Japanese version of the game.
