The '''puppeteer''' is a recurring monster in the {{DQSeries}}. Introduced in ''[[Dragon Quest VIII]]'', it is a [[Humanoid family|humanoid]] monster armed with hand puppets.

==Characteristics==
Puppeteers wear outfits that completely cover their forms with only their blank eyes being visible through the eye-holes in their masks, much like those worn by stagehands in traditional Japanese theater known as ''[[Wikipedia:Kuroko|kuroko]]''. This concealing garb is mostly a black color with some blue and green, likely to focus attention towards the more colorful puppets used by the puppeteer, namely a [[lump mage]] on their right arms and a [[slime]] on their left. It also carries a puppet of a [[dracky]] and a [[golem]] that it uses when telling different stories. The puppeteer can also envelop its enemies in illusions and uses its slime puppet to perform punches.

The design of the puppeteer and the other puppet-carrying monsters is based on Japanese comedy duo Puppet Muppet (パペットマペット, ''Papetto mapetto''), who consist of a frog puppet (Kaeru-kun) and a cow puppet (Ushi-kun) who are manipulated by a puppeteer wearing an obscuring black costume known as Kuroko that they do not acknowledge.
