It protects allies by having the user take the hit in their place, covering one friend in the mainline games and the entire party in the ''[[Dragon Quest Monsters (series)|Monsters]]'' spin-offs.

It is used by the enemies [[Liddle]], [[Brock]], [[Cabot]], [[iron tortoise]]s, and [[plated goretoise]]s.

Selflessness works in the exact same way as in the previous game, being learned by [[Paladin]]s at the first rank.

Selflessness is learned via the [[Altruist]], [[Barricade]], [[Defender]], [[Empath]], [[Good Knight]], [[Hulk]], [[Just Ruler]], [[Martyr]], [[Musclehead]], and [[Protector]] talents.

[[Crocodine]] can also learn it through Talent Blossoming. It costs 23 {{MP}} to use and will take all attacks for any allies in the squares adjacent to the user until their next turn. Although it is not stated, Selflessness will also give the user a 40% reduction in damage taken for one turn, as well.
