'''Torneko no Daibōken: Fushigi no Dungeon''' (Japanese: 不思議のダンジョン トルネコの大冒険), also known as "'''Torneko‘s Mystery Dungeon'''" is the first game in the ''Mysterious Dungeon'' series. This installment features {{Torneko}} Taloon, the merchant from {{Dragon Warrior IV}}. The game involves Torneko adventuring around in the "Mysterious Dungeon" in search of items and treasure.

In 2026, it received an international release on all current platforms under the title "'''Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko‘s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD-'''". This release offered an English translation for the first time. 

==Gameplay==
The gameplay is similar to [[Wikipedia:roguelike|roguelike]] style PC games. The main similarity is the heavy use of randomized dungeons and effects, with each square or panel representing one "step". While Torneko explores the dungeon, he collects gold and items and fights monsters, similar to the ones found in {{Main Series}} games. With every step the player takes, monsters will advance steps, too (unless they are sleeping). There are also trap squares that are activated when Torneko steps on them.

Each dungeon has a certain number of floors to explore. The goal is to explore each floor as much as possible before finding the stairs and moving on to the next floor, and ultimately, the treasure that hides deep in the mysterious dungeons. After claiming the treasure, Torneko must return to the surface, either by walking or by using an [[Evac]] scroll.

If Torneko successfully leaves the dungeon, he can sell off the items he found. By saving up money, Torneko can improve his home and shop. The catch is that if Torneko falls in battle, all of his gold and items earned while in the dungeon are lost unless he has an iron safe in his bag. After a certain upgrade to the family's shop, he can also equip certain items to make himself stronger for the next trip, although his level resets every time he enters a dungeon.

Inside the dungeon, Torneko can equip weapons, shields, arrows, and rings. Weapons increase the damage Torneko deals, while Shields reduce the damage he takes from enemies. Arrows allow Torneko to attack monsters at a distance, as long as they are directly in front of him. Rings grant passive habilities, though some rings like the harker ring hinder Torneko. Torneko also can find a variety of herbs and other consumable items, such as magic scrolls or wands. Wands are not equippable like the other weapons, but Torneko can use them a few times before they break.

==Music==
As with other games in the ''Dragon Quest'' series, the musical score for the game was composed by [[Kōichi Sugiyama]]. [[wikipedia:Sony Records|Sony Records]] released the soundtrack, titled ''Suite Torneko's Great Adventure: Musical Chemistry'', on October 21, 1993 in Japan. It contains eight arranged tracks performed by a [[wikipedia:chamber orchestra|chamber orchestra]], as well as three tracks containing original game music.

==Reception==
In 2006, the game was voted number 78 by the readers of ''[[wikipedia:Famitsu|Famitsu]]'' magazine in its top 100 games of all time.

==HD Remaster==
On September 9th, 2026 the game was re-released under the title "'''Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko‘s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD-'''" on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation  5, Xbox Series X/S, and Pc via Steam shortly after a surprise reveal on a Nintendo Direct presentation livestreamed earlier that day. This remaster marks the first time the game has received an official English translation and a release outside of Japan.

The HD remaster implements a series of quality of life improvments and a brand new opening movie with illustrations by Naoki Ikushima. The Steam version also includes exclusive interactive streaming features.
