Yggdrasil is a great, mythical tree that pierces the heavens with its branches and is said to have divine healing properties. Introduced in DQ2, it is found in highly isolated and dangerous locations that prevent common folk from approaching it. The Yggdrasil leaf and Yggdrasil dew carry the essence of the main tree within them, making them among the most potent healing items in any game. ==Appearances== ===DQ2=== The player can obtain an Yggdrasil leaf by traveling south of the Sea Cave to an island with one tree on it. By searching this tree, the player can obtain the Leaf. The Party 2 can only get one leaf at a time from this tree and if the player already has an Yggdrasil leaf, they cannot get another one. ===DQ3=== Yggdrassil is found in at the intersection of four lone impassable mountains in the region of the world that corresponds to China. By searching this tile, the player can obtain a leaf. As in II, the Party 3 may only have one leaf at a time. ===DQ4=== Yggdrasil is a location in IV. It appears simply as an immense tree hundreds of times the size of any real-world tree, with the elven village of El Forado at the base. Located slightly east of Mintos and surrounded by a ring of impenetrable mountains, it is only accessible by balloon flight. The Party 4 visits it late in the game, after acquiring the balloon. After ascending to its boughs, they encounter Orifiela, a Zenithian who fell from the sky and landed in the Tree's branches. She helps them find the Zenithian sword, which is nearby, and, after being rescued, agrees to show them the way to Zenithia. In DQ4 Chapter 6 (Sony PlayStation and Nintendo DS Version only), defeating Chow Mein and Foo Yung will cause the blooming of the rare Yggdrasil flower atop the Tree. ====Other treasures==== *Staff of salvation *Yggdrasil dew ====Monsters==== *Freeze fly *Fuddlestick *Green Dragon *Grim keeper *King Cureslime *Moosifer *Ogre *Whirly girly ===DQ7=== Yggdrasil can be found in Gröndal. When the Party 7 travels there in the past, the World Tree hasn't achieved maturity yet; it is a mere sapling known as Ygg. The residents of Gröndal, under the influence of fighting batboon try to cut down the sapling before it becomes a World Tree. The party stops this from happening and Ygg is able to become a World Tree. The Party 7 can obtain a World Leaf by going to the World Tree. If the party does not have a World Leaf, a bird will drop one from the tree for the party to pick up and obtain. If they do, the bird will not drop one. They can also obtain a phial of Yggdrasil dew at Gröndal. However, only the Hero 7 can get on line to buy one and, if supplies run out before the Hero 7 gets one, the Party 7 will have to leave town and enter again to try and get another one. If they already have one, they will not be allowed to buy another. ===DQ8=== Known as the Tree of Styx, it is located in the Baccarat Region, overlooked by four Great sabrecat statues. It only manifests at dawn, and vanishes once the sun gets too high up. As usual, it provides 1 Yggdrasil leaf if the party is not already in possession of one. The spirit of a dead Sabercat called Baumren also wanders around the tree at first. Master Felix from Chateau Felix asks the party to spray some Sand of serenity around the tree in order to make Baumren rest in piece. In exchange he provides Baumren's bell for calling a Sabrecat almost anywhere. ===DQ9=== In IX, the tree is part of the central plot and appears at the top of the Observatory. The Yggdrasil is considered the gateway to the realm of the Almighty, as when it blossoms the Starlight Express comes to ferry Celestrians. However, as part of the events of the game, when the tree blossoms, it instead causes a disaster in the Observatory. It is later revealed that Yggdrasil is in fact the goddess Celestria, the daughter of the Almighty, Zenus. She became Yggdrasil to stay her father smiting mortal kind, for only the Benevolessence produced by humans could undo her self-inflicted curse. ===DQ11=== In XI, Yggdrasil is once more a part of the central plot, being located in the very middle of the world map. The source of all life, it is believed that each leaf in its boughs represents an individual residing in Erdrea, falling once that life is extinguished. If evil were to seize the land in its grip, the arrival of a destined hero would be indicated by a leaf glowing especially bright upon blooming. Being chosen by Yggdrasil Herself, the Luminary as the champion is called bears a special mark that can be used to call upon divine powers. This mark also allows the Luminary to draw upon memories captured by the tree, giving them a special clairvoyance into past events. The history of the Yggdrasil Tree dates back to ancient times when Yggdragon dueled with Calasmos, but was slain in combat and fell to the earth in Erdrea. His soul was able to be revived with the assistance of lost time spirits, taking the visage of Yggdrasil and causing life to flourish throughout Erdrea. He created the first Luminary, Erdwin to destroy Calasmos and bring peace to the world. Since he was unsuccessful, he later created the Hero 11, the current Luminary who succeeded in defeating The Dark One and thus was granted the title of Erdrick by Yggdragon. ===DQH=== Section-Stub ==Etymology== Yggdrasil comes from Norse mythology. It literally means World Tree and it is the metaphorical "back bone" that supports the nine realms of the universe upon its branches. ==Map & Gallery== ===<small>Dragon Quest IV</small>=== <center><gallery> DQ IV NES Inside the World Tree.gif|Inside the tree in IV.
