Funghouls are spotted, red-capped mushrooms with stalks thick enough to serve as a face and body. It has stubby arms, small feet, sad, yellow eyes, and a fanged mouth with a tongue lolling out. In some spinoff games, it is considered part of the undead family as the Obake (おばけ) in its Japanese name refers to a type of yōkai or ghost in folklore. The funghoul's English name is a combination of the words "fungi" and "ghoul", a type of demon from pre-Islamic Arabian mythology that is said to feast on corpses.
Ghastly fungi that thrive in dark recesses. A single sniff of their soporific Sweet Breath is enough to send even the most caffeinated traveller straight to sleep.
Notably in this game, Funghouls have the ability to inflict poison on the party instead of putting them to sleep. This is the only game where they do so.
Funghoul began appearing in Version 5.0, being encountered in the Netherworld and is quite stronger than its typical early game appearances. As always, it is able to put opponents to sleep with their its Sweet Breath.
These great big gurning mushrooms spring up in their dozens in damp locales. They propagate by putting travellers to sleep and seeding them with their spores.
Funghoul appears as an E-rank monster of the Nature family. It can be recruited from Chapters 5-7, 7-1, 9-2, 14-1, 14-3, and 14-6 of the main storyline. The Funghoul can participate in Stump chump and Crabid's Battle Roads as a party member.
