She is a neat and tidy beauty. Although she is calm, laid-back, and compassionate, Serena is also slightly hapless and causes worry for her twin sister. Veronica states that Serena is the younger twin, but due to her transformation, Serena appears to be the older sister. Her harp is her most prized possession and she relieves stress by playing it. Sweets are Serena's favorite food and her ambition is to open a cake shop in Arboria when peace is achieved. Serena quickly gets accustomed to her sister's predicament after an initial surprise, finding her new stature to be cute. Her personal motto is to always keep the sun in your heart. Her ideal romantic partner would be someone like a hero from a romance novel. The thing she wants the most is a sequel to her favorite book, "A Ripple on the Sea of Love", which is about a romance between a human and a mermaid.

Serena has very keen senses and an ability to sense magic, as shown in a variety of cutscenes and lines of Party Talk dialogue. She often acknowledges tastes and scents that she catches, and Veronica mentions that Serena's sense of smell is particularly good. In many cutscenes, Serena will say that she "senses" magic, particularly dark magic and evil influences, as well as the powers of Yggdrasil. She also senses the presence of her sister in two cutscenes, in the rare circumstances when they are separated. Thanks to her keen senses, particularly when it comes to magic, Serena often picks up on details that the other characters miss.

Serena and Veronica are the descendants of the sage Serenica, and have been trained in magical arts since they were girls. Serena is a Keeper, a person destined to guide and aid the Luminary throughout his adventure: when the Luminary has come of age and his presence becomes known to the world, Serena and Veronica leave their life in Arboria to find him. Sometime prior to the Luminary and Erik entering the city of Hotto, the twins were ambushed by a monster named Jarvis. This lead to Veronica being drained of her magical power as well as losing her adult body, and Serena was kidnapped. Once Jarvis is slain and she is rescued, Serena and Veronica reaffirm their vows to protect the Luminary and join the party.
At some point in time, Veronica went to the steam baths in Hotto and was ambushed by lackeys of a MFamilies named Jarvis, leading to her kidnapping and being drained of her magical power, as well as losing her adult body. Serena left Hotto to find Veronica in the Cryptic Crypt, but by then she had alraady escaped. Veronica travelled back to Hotto to find Serena, unaware she had went to the dungeon, and searches the village. She encounters the Luminary and his companion Erik, and after a bit of insulting the latter she forces them to help her find Serena, her "little sister", ominously telling the Luminary that she knows exactly who he is and that she hopes he won't let her down. When they make their way into the Crypt, they find a blonde-haired woman with a green dress unconscious at The Sacred Spring. Veronica is immediately worried, going to her side, which confuses the other two. When Serena awakes, Erik and the Luminary are shocked to learn that Serena is this "little sister" of Veronica's, and even more shocked to learn that they are actually technically twins. The Party 11 then navigates to the end of the Crypt, defeat Jarvis, and return Veronica's magic power. Serena is dismayed that her body did not return to that of an adult, but Veronica makes light of the situation and the sisters share a moment. Veronica then asks Serena if she knows who they're travelling with, to which she confirms, and they pledge their protection of the Luminary. The party returns to Hotto for the night, and the next day the sisters reaffirm their vows of protection and officially join the party. They also tell the Luminary that the Arborian prophecies tell them that their goal is to reach Yggdrasil, which is the point in time where the Luminary's adventure stops being mindless wandering and begins being the start of something important.
start
They travel to the desert kingdom Gallopolis (picking up the jester Sylvando here) and then the port town Gondolia in search of the Rainbough, their biggest lead on a path to Yggdrasil. In Gondolia, the party split ways - Sylvando and the twins go exploring to pass the time, the upcoming Signor Universo contest preventing vessels from coming and going, while Erik takes the Luminary in to try and get special permission to use the docks from the manager of the event. After their failed attempmt, Serena arrives and tells them that Veronica has gotten into trouble, leading them over to the upper level of Gondolia just to the east of where the manager's house is. They find that Veronica had gotten her staff stolen by a kid called Benigno, in attempt to cure the magic preventing his friend Placido from speaking. Serena kneels down beside Placido and gently touches his throat, and the dark magic radiating inside tells her that he's been cursed. She tells Benigno that she might be able to cure him with some birdsong nectar, so the party heads to the Grotta della Fonte in search of pure spring water, an ingredient for the concoction. Serena makes the nectar in the cave and the party heads back to the port town, where the festivities are in full swing. Sylvando sends Erik and the Luminary off to secure them a front-row spot in the audience before he and the twins set off to search for Placido - which, they do find, but their attention is quickly drawn to the aforementioned fugitives after the Luminary is recognised by Heliodorian knight Jasper, who was standing on the stage. After the two of them fend off some soldiers, Jasper and his men are distracted when Sylvando and Veronica make a distraction that causes the knight to order his men to fan out, leaving the fugitives on the stage alone. Serena whisper-shouts for their attention from the west side of the stage and they run after her. She drags the Luminary along by the wrist as Erik follows close behind, but Jasper notices and fires a ball of dark magic at the Luminary. Erik jumps in front, which causes him to fall to the ground, and tells the two of them to use the time he bought them and escape. Serena nods and drags the Luminary away. Later, when the party regroups to plan to save Erik, she is seen to be extremely worried about Erik's wellbeing, voicing her concerns out loud.

startAfter the destruction of the World Tree and the death of her twin sister, Serena's personality becomes bolder and more determined. She continues to stay by the Luminary's side and resolves to help him defeat Mordegon and bring peace to Erdrea. To that end, she cuts her hair short in memory of Veronica and temporarily gains access to all of her sister's magical abilities.end
After the party escapes from Gondolia via the Salty Stallion, Serena has no further major role in the story until the party rests at the First Forest - Northern Campsite. Serena plays her harp for the party as they talk in anticipation for the imminent trip to Yggdrasil the next day, before they wrap up the discussion and everyone goes to bed. She asks Veronica as they lay in their shared tent if their leaves (on Yggdrasil, which each represent a life) would fall at the same time, because they bloomed at the same time (in other words: if they would die together, because they were born at the same time). Veronica remarks that Serena has "always been a bit slow, to be honest" before rolling over and saying that she hopes they do. In Act Two, Serena reveals that after Veronica's comment, she had told Serena that she should promise her that she should finish [the journey] without her, if something should happen. This cutscene is relevant later.
end
Act Two
startFollowing the Fall of the World Tree, Serena is split from the rest of the party members. She is encountered when the Party 11 decide to want to head to Arboria again in search of a sacred flying contraption, walking through the passage in the The Snærfelt where they are jumped by the Auroral serpent, who is newly freed by Mordegon and wants to take revenge on his sealing from the previous Luminary Erdwin by targeting his reincarnation. After a difficult fight, the party is paralysed by the serpent; unable to do anything, they all sink to the ground. As the serpent prepares the final strike, a sweet melody causes his own paralysis and prevents the attack. The party looks to the cliff, where a woman is playing her harp, and chants an incantation before heavenly winds are casted on the serpent, and it dissipates into purple smoke.

* Note that "May heaven's winds propel thee hence!" is a line that Serena may say when casting spells of the Swoosh line.
The woman heals the party, and when they get back on their feet they recognise her face to be Serena. She repeats the vow of protection that she and Veronica had told the Luminary back in Hotto, though the colloquial pronoun "we" in "Long have we waited to greet you" has been replaced with "I", as Veronica is not with you. She tells the party that she was intending to make her way back to Arboria but got sidetracked helping those in need after The Fall. When she heard that the golden glacier blocking Sniflheim had melted away, she decided to finally try and head home, not expecting to encounter the rest of the party.

When the party arrives at Arboria, her parents are praying for the sisters' safety with Father Benedictus. The latter notices Serena's presence and Serena's parents turn to greet her, but Father Benedictus is disconcerted and asks her where Veronica is. Serena is also shook, as she had been expecting her sister to already be in Arboria. Her senses point her to somewhere north of where they stand in the town center, to the Grove of Repose. As children, she and Veronica used to play there. There, they find Veronica smiling as she leans against a tree trunk with her staff stuck in the ground next to her. Serena is overjoyed to see her and crouches down, teasing her for sleeping outside in the cold, but is concerned by a lack of response. The Luminary's mark on his hand glows gold, and so does the staff; Serena supposes that he might see another memory like those he sees from Yggdrasil roots, and encourages him to reach his hand out. The party witnesses what happened on the day of The Fall, after Mordegon sapped the life force out of Yggdrasil, where Veronica used the last of her strength to zoom them to different corners of the earth but had no more energy to save herself. Veronica tells Serena to go on without her, and she falls to the ground mouthing the word "goodbye" before the vision pans out to an overall view of Yggdrasil and ends. The rest of the party is shaken, and when Serena leans down to cup Veronica's cheek, she vanishes into gold particles. The party is all visibly upset, but Serena steels her resolve for the parting ceremony and stays strong for the rest of Arboria. Notably, when the citizens take turns sacrificing some of their hair to the fire, Serena stands there with Veronica's staff and does not part with her hair. This is important later.

Father Benedictus calls the party in to the Cathedral and tells them that he may have an inkling of an idea for their mission to find a magical flying contraption, having a vision of the party riding a magical flying whale, though without Veronica due to her death. He then sends them off to the inn rooms he provided for them. That night, the Luminary wakes up in the middle of the night to the melody of a harp and the soft rall of rain. When he goes outside, he finds that all of the other party members have also been roused, and are spread out around Arboria. Serena is found playing her harp at the altar-like area north-west of the inn, standing close by the tree with Veronica's staff leaning against it. She is singing a song that she had loved ever since she was a kid, a love song from the Age of Heroes about a lady's unrequited love for her long-lost sweetheart - though, nobody remembers any of the details regarding their identities.
*The lady and the sweetheart are implied to be Serenica and Erdwin; the former had never gotten to confess her feelings due to a certain incident that lead to his death.

Serena tells the Luminary that something has been bothering her lately, and tells him of the late-night talk she had with Veronica where she refused to agree to her terms of carrying on their journey without her. She tells him that she wonders if only she had agreed to her that night, then Veronica's sacrifice may have been a little easier to make. She comments that she always has been slow, just like Veronica said, always being a step behind her in every aspect, before her composure cracks and she asks the Luminary to stay for a bit. Afterwards, the rain stops, and she vows not to let Veronica's death be in vain, cutting off her hair as symbolism of her growth. When she finally parts with her hair, throwing it to the sky, it flies upwards and turns to embers. Note that this scene closely resembles the ceremony at Dundrasil in Act One, where the members of the Drasilian royal family light foliage on fire for the restless wandering souls to follow its smoke to Yggdrasil - the pink butterflies (souls) are adjacent to the fiery embers. Veronica's staff then glows with golden magic, which floats up from the head and into Serena's heart. Serena, incredulous, snaps her fingers to test out her new fire powers (like how Veronica showed her in the Cryptic Crypt in Act One) and she looks up to the sky, thanking her sister.

From then on, she is able to use all her sister's abilities and weapons - essentially having both of their character builder skill trees - and her personality becomes bolder and more determined as well. She greets the Luminary the next day when he wakes up at around noon, waiting for him despite the other party members having already left for the top of the mountain. The two of them go to the Luminary's Landing together, and Father Benedictus tells the party of the vision he had last night in his sleep. He had dreamed of Veronica standing on this ledge playing the calamus flute he had given her: which was another memento of Serenica's, one that she left behind on her last visit to Arboria. When Benedictus woke up, he had found the flute under his pillow. He gives the flute to Serena, who plays it perfectly, but nothing happens. She hands the flute to the Luminary, hoping that his powers may activate something, which it does - as soon as he touches the flute, it extends rapidly into a fishing rod, and he casts the rod into the skies below, fishing up a giant flying whale that the party rides on to Havens Above. Serena does not have any more major story significance after the events of Arboria, but still helps the Luminary defeat Mordegon and bring peace to Erdrea.end
Postgame
start
At the beginning of postgame, the party is seen gathering with silver chalices at the tree which Veronica had been seen resting against in Act Two, wishing her a well and good departure. Serena tells herself not to cry, and mocks herself by doing an actually-quite-accurate impersonation of Veronica, which gets a laugh out of everyone. The party then heads into the main village to party with the Arborians and celebrate the victory of the party triumphing against the Lord of Shadows.

Searching the area south of Octagonia in Dundrasil Region will reveal the ruins of Havens Above, and Rab is reminded of a book he had been reading as of late. He pulls out a book written by the Watchers, and tells them that they apparently guard a sacred light that can restore those "lost to eternity" when it burns bright enough. Sylvando interprets this as being a way to bring people back from the dead, and Jade figures that perhaps they could bring back Veronica using this method. They find the Wheel of Time there and unlock the Tower of Time hoping to bring back Veronica, encountering the Timekeeper there. Serena asks The Timekeeper about this supposed method for resurrection and The Timekeeper tells the party that if returned to a point in the past, those lost to time can be brought back. The party is overjoyed at the prospect of potentially saving Veronica alongside the rest of the world, but their excitement is quickly quelled when The Timekeeper says that only the Luminary is able to break the Time Sphere with the Sword of Light for a possibility of going back in time. If he is unlucky, he may be trapped floating in nothingness forever. The party, naturally, cannot let their friend go so easily, and block his pathway forward. Talking to each party member has different lines convincing the Luminary to stay; Serena tells him that she promised Veronica to protect him on their journey, and if that anything happened to him, Veronica would never forgive her. Ultimately, to progress the story, the Luminary must talk to Erik, who understands that the duty of the Luminary is greater than the feelings of his friends, and allows him through. As he steps up to the altar, the party runs forward a little, each wanting to say one last thing to him before he leaves. Serena expresses that she began the journey thinking that she was simply doing her duty, but as time passed "it became...so much more than that" and that she'll always remember the time they spent together.

As a result of travelling back in time to a point before The Fall, all of her Act Two development is removed.

After the events at Yggdrasil, defeating Mordegon again at Heliodor and the rise of the Dark One, the party is directed to the Emerald Coast to get a better view of the Dark Star. There, they are found by Mordegon, who actually turns out to just be party's perception of The Seer. The Seer tells the party something vague about riding Cetacea to meet the Watchers and also something about a legendary flute before disappearing. The mention of the flute prompts Veronica to give the Luminary the calamus flute and he proceeds to summon the aforementioned huge flying whale, to the party's complete and utter surprise. As guided by the Watcher Elder Eegoltap at Havens Above, the party searches for information of the Age of Heroes, the party travelling the world in search of three Yggdrasil seedlings that hold memories of the Heroes of Legend. After the third memory, the party is confronted by The Seer, who gifts Veronica a pendant that returns her body to her natural adult form. The Seer then tells the twins to pray hard, harder than they ever have before, and they glow brightly before turning into a white glowing tree. Interacting with this tree also shows memories of the ancient Heroes, perhaps implying that the twins may be channeling power from Yggdrasil Herself. After the visions end, the sisters return to normal, and Veronica's body is also smaller again. One of the visions leads them to the Tower of Time, picking up the Wheel of Time from Havens Above to unlock the door. They confront The Timekeeper again, asking if they were the legendary sage Serenica who they had seen transform into The Timekeeper in the visions, but The Timekeeper has no recollection of their past life due to being turned into a large tockle. However, she has figments of memories attached to the flute and the flying whale Cetacea, and helps the twins restore her golden armour from when the ancient Heroes rode her. The Timekeeper first makes the flute stronger, like how they remembered it, and the sisters play the great and sacred song of awakening handed down from generations before. The party is then teleported onto Cetacea's back.

*Note that while The Timekeeper says the flute may only play one song, the sisters here play the song Heavenly Flight while the melody that is played when calling Cetacea is reminiscent of the motif of Flying Whale Cetacea. This motif is not present in Heavenly Flight.
*Furthermore, flutes typically can only make the sound of a flute. However, in the track, the flute melody is taken over by the oboe for some period of time, making it seem like the calamus flute sounds like an oboe instead. Although, the other instruments in the track that come in, like various string instruments, are not explained either.

Cetacea tells the party about trials underneath the ruins of Zwaardsrust ran by a man called Drustan, so they can prepare for the fight against the Dark One. After completing each trial, the Luminary is able to select a wish to grant for himself. If the player has rebuilt Cobblestone, he may choose someone to live with him. Picking Serena will lead to her respective event at the Cobblestone Tor, where she tells the Luminary to close his eyes. When he opens them, he is somehow face-to-face with a giant cooking pot that she had smuggled onto the mountain. She tells him that she wants to cook better, seeing the party's reactions to her cooking while they were adventuring, and that she wishes he try her food.

After defeating Calasmos, the party returns to their respective homes. If the player selected Serena as their housemate, she will have gone back to Arboria. Amber will tell the Luminary that he has visitors, to which he walks around Cobblestone before greeting the sisters at the entrance to the village. Serena tells the Luminary that, since they saw Serenica return the Sword of Light back to the Heart of Yggdrasil after Erdwin's death, they should return it as well. The Luminary changes out of his Cobblestone clobber (the story-forced Cobblestone's Finest outfit that does not require the equipment) into his purple adventuring default clothes and heads up to Yggdrasil with the sisters. There, they meet the Yggdragon, and the Luminary is bestowed the title of Erdrick, concluding the events of the game.end

Trivia
Trivia
*As young girls, Serena and Veronica would sometimes swap clothing and trade places for fun.
**In the voice drama Light Through the Leaves of Love (not to be confused with the track of the same name), the two girls permanently traded accessories - Serena gave Veronica her blue bracelets and Veronica gave Serena her hairband. See the Gallery image captioned "Veronica and Serena as young children" for an image of the two of them before swapping accessories.
*Her harp is her most prized possession and she relieves stress by playing it.
*Sweets are Serena's favorite food and her ambition is to open a cake shop in Arboria when peace is achieved.
*Her personal motto is to "always keep the sun in your heart".
*Her ideal romantic partner would be someone like a hero from a romance novel. The thing she wants the most is a sequel to her favorite book, "A Ripple on the Sea of Love", which is about a romance between a human and a mermaid.
*Serena's height is 160 cm or 5' 3".

*In the international fan poll for Dragon Quest XI that was released by Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, Serena was voted the seventh most popular character in the game, but the least popular female party member, with a total of 237 votes.
*Although her spells and abilities are traditionally associated with Priests in the series, Serena is never called one in the game and she has no affiliation with any religious order (other than that of respecting the holy power of Yggdrasil). If Serena reaches Level 99, the player will receive a trophy/achievement that is titled "Virtuoso Healer" for mastering the way of the healer.
*In certain lines of Party Talk dialogue, Serena will say that she is "not very good with heights." She shares this trait with Erik and Jade, although neither admits it as readily as Serena does.
