The Dragonlord's great-great-grandson is a non-player character that first appeared in Dragon Quest II.

Appearance and Personality

The descendant of the Dragonlord looks identical to his ancestor in most appearances, save for a slight change in his skin tone in Tact. He wears the same robes and carries a copy of the cane his forebearer used. Contrary to all expectations, the descendant of the Archfiend is a rather friendly guy who has no interest in conquering the world--though he does have a habit of indulging in his ancestor's reputation as a matter of family pride.

Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line

The Dragonlord's great-great-grandson resides in Charlock Castle and stands in the same location where his great-great-grandfather stood in Dragon Quest. However, rather than fighting the trio, he instead offers critical advice about defeating Hargon--he takes personal offense to the mad cultist's ambition of worldly conquest as it infringes on his family's claim to fame. In particular, he describes that the 5 Sigils must be gathered from around the world of Torland, starting with the one in the island Lighthouse south of where Cantlin once stood.

After Hargon and Malroth's defeat, the Dragonlord's great-great-grandson suggest that he and the trio be friends. He also muses in giving the Hero and himself nicknames, calling the Hero "My Dearest Dragon Warrior" and declaring himself as "Your Dashing Dragonliness."

Dragon Quest I&II HD-2D Remake

In the HD-2D Remake, the Dragonlord's great-grandson dislikes Hargon for frequently invading his castle and attempting to recruit him to his cause. He shows contempt for Hargon's goals and has taken it upon himself to fulfil his ancestor's duty of watching over the world to ensure its safety.

As the current incarnation of the Dragon Queen, the Dragonlord's descendant possesses holy power, unlike his great-grandfather. He is capable of detecting evil and using the Sphere of Light, and gives the heroes Erdrick's sword.

In the post-game he can be fought once the party obtains the Sphere of Light and allows him to obtain his true form. The battle plays out similarly to the battle with Dragonlord in that Dragonlord's Grandson has two forms that must be fought one after another, though he proves himself to be a much more formidable opponent. Once defeated, he'll upgrade the Erdrick Sword and Erdrick's Shield into their supreme forms and then inform the party that another evil exists and that isn't Hargon himself.

Dragon Quest II gamebook

The Dragonlord's descendant has a much larger role in the choose-your-own-adventure book published by Enix in 1988. He aids the three Luminaries by transforming into his natural Dragon form and flying them to the Great Lighthouse in the center of the northwestern sea. He reverts to the humanoid form but refrains from participating in battle as he admits he is a bit of a wuss, though he does cast Midheal on the group after combat is over. During the ending, the Dragonlord's great-great-grandson flies the party directly to Middenhall and partakes in the victory celebration.

Interestingly, if the reader makes poor choices and loses the battle in the great lighthouse then the Dragonlord's descendant will sacrifice the magic maintaining his humanoid form to hide the Luminaries via a sort of Morph spell. He is unable to take on the form again afterwards, and to avoid continuity errors he exclusively appears in his dragon state during the confrontation with Malroth and the finale.

This gamebook addresses the fan theory of the Queen of Dragons being the mother of the Dragonlord by having the great-great-grandson mention the Queen in passing and referring to her as "Hihibaa-san" (ひいひいばあさん).

Dragon Quest Tact

The Dragonlord's great-great-grandson makes an appearances in the Dragon Quest II event for Tact. Unlike to his past representations, his physical portrayal actually differs slightly from how Dragonlord is portrayed, the Dragonlord's great-great-grandson being more purple in skin tone and sporting a warm purple robe and differently designed amulet.

Trivia

• While his exact familial relationship to the Dragonlord has changed several times in English releases, he has consistently been labeled as Dragonlord's great-grandchild in Japanese.
• In the Japanese versions of Dragon Quest II, the nickname he gives the Hero is based on the first two to four characters of his name followed by the honorific "chan", while the name he gives himself is "Ryu-chan."
