The heligator is a monster that is a cross between an alligator and a dragon with canine features, floating about in midair as if it is swimming through water. It has a brown hide with a tan underside, shaggy red manes, a long tail, and a jaw filled with sharp fangs. Heligator's Japanese name is combination pun based on ''wani'' (ワニ), the Japanese word for alligator or crocodile, and {{translation|''wyvern''|ワイバーン|waibān}}, a type of dragon. Depending on the game, it is either considered a [[Beast family|beast]] or a [[Dragon family|dragon]].
