The trap box is able to levitate in midair under its own power. The lid of the trap box's [[treasure chest]] is split into two and serve as the monster's hands, being used in vicious crushing attacks. From inside of the bottom half of the [[treasure chest]] peers out a frightful skeleton with a flexible serpentine spine, horns on either side of its skull, and a sickening tongue even longer than that of a normal [[mimic]]'s. Despite its skeletal appearance, the trap box still belongs to the [[material family]] rather than being one of the undead. Much like the other mimics, it can inflict a variety of different [[status effect]]s on unfortunate adventurers including sleep and confusion.

The trap box is a recurring boss monster in the Dragon Quest series that was introduced in Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King.

Originally appearing as the boss of the Swordsman's Labyrinth, it has gone on to make regular appearances in other games in the series.

It is the first Mimic in the series not to remain hidden in its treasure chest, revealing a ghastly skeleton within.
