'''Barbatos''' is a boss {{MFamilies}} in {{Dragon Quest IV}} that has since become a regular enemy in the {{DQSeries}} noteworthy for being a dangerous encounter in the late stage of a game.

Barbatos is one of [[Psaro the Manslayer]]'s top generals and guards one of the four towers that maintain the barrier surrounding [[Castle Nadiria]]. He is a powerful spell caster, and with the exception of [[Aamon]], possesses the most powerful magical capabilities of the four and often has an affinity for powerful explosive spells. His dialogue indicates that he is loyal to {{Psaro C}}. Barbatos has the upper body of a solidly-built human man with a large pair of wings on his back, a huge pair of curved horns on his head, and pointed ears, while his lower body is that of a goat. His skin is light blue and his hair and the fur on his lower half is indigo or purple, depending on the game. He has a forked beard and the horns on his head are bronze-coloured. When Barbatos reappeared in {{VII}}, he had tan-coloured skin with brown fur on his lower half and grey hair and horns instead of the normal colouration.

This grating goat is immune to [[Whack]], [[Poof]], [[Fuddle]], [[Dazzle]], [[Snooze]], [[Drain Magic]], and is highly resistant to all forms of attack magic except for [[Woosh]] and [[Zap]] spells. He casts [[Kaboom]] and breathes intense flames. He drops the [[Miracle sword]] when he dies.

A pair of these fiends appear near the summit of [[Mt. Zugzwang]]. In the room right before the lair of Grandmaster [[Nimzo]], a [[treasure chest]] containing the [[Orichalcum fangs]] can be found. When the {{Hero 5}} attempts to open the chest, the pair break down the door and engage the {{Party 5}} in battle. They cannot be recruited in this battle due to the polluting evil of [[Mt. Zugzwang]], but they can join the {{Party 5}} when found again as a normal [[encounter]] in [[Estark's Labyrinth]].

Barbatos appeared as a boss in Chapter 3 of the {{Dragon Quest IV}} event held in November 2019, later appearing as a powerful {{MFamilies}} in various places. He has the ability to perform [[desperate attack]]s, cast [[Boom]], and use [[War Cry]], [[Flame Breath]], and [[Chilly Breath]]. Barbatos can also be scouted as a monster companion, as well.

Barbatos first appeared as a boss during the original ''Dragon Quest IV'' event, eventually appearing as a S-rank monster of the [[Demon family]] on his own banner alongside [[Shogum]]. He can be faced in the event story Chapter 4, Episode 2: The Second Barrier, as well as in the [[Four Dens of Nadiria|Den of Barbatos]] on the Road to [[Psaro's Peak]]. Barbatos is joined by a pair of [[Cannibox]]es and [[Drackyma]]s when faced in his Den.

Barbatos is the name of a duke of hell described in ''[[Wikipedia:The Lesser Key of Solomon|The Lesser Key of Solomon]]'', being described as a humanoid who can speak with animals, conciliates rulers, and predict the future. The demon's name is derived from the Latin ''Barbatus'', meaning "Bearded". The localization team did their demonological homework, as this perfectly describes the {{MFamilies}}.
