The '''Chimaera''' is a monster in the series.

The chimaera is a monster with a [[Bird family|vulture]]'s head with a ring of downy feathers around its neck and the body of a serpent, with a bird's wings that constantly flap to keep it airborne.

Having appeared many times throughout the series, chimaeras have proven themselves to be formidable creatures, often having great potential for strength, magic, and natural skills such as breathing fire and ice as well as a chance to drop [[chimaera wing]]s if they are defeated. They can be terrible creatures to face in battle and terrific allies to have at one's side.

Chimaeras appeared from the beginning of the game. They are able to breathe out both [[Fire Breath]] and [[Flame Breath]]. In Version 2.0, chimaeras were one of the original ten monsters that could be [[Monsterrecruitment#Dragon_Quest_X|tamed]] by [[Monster Master]]s. Starting with Version 5.0, vicious chimaeras can be faced in the Netherworld, as well, now having the ability to breathe out a [[Scorch|blazing fire]].
