Title Beloved Sidekick

Chocobo is a recurring animal in the Final Fantasy series. It appears in Dragon Quest Tact as part of a collaboration event with the mobile strategy game War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. It is a large, flightless bird with yellow plumage often domesticated as a mount and known for its signature "kweh" cry.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Chocobos are large avian creatures that act as the equivalent of horses in the Final Fantasy series. They have yellowish-orange feathers, three-toed feet, and long necks. In later games, the yellow-feathered variety of chocobo became the most common breed while many other varieties of chocobo have appeared with different colored feathers and possessing different abilities. Some other breeds of chocobo include red, black, white, and gold. Chocobos are intelligent creatures and are capable of understanding human language. They are known for their swift speed on foot.

Greens are the chocobos' food of choice, with Gyshal Greens being the most common and commonly appear as items needed to tame a chocobo. Chocobos can sometimes be used for racing, which has appeared as a minigame in several games. Occasionally, they can also be called into battle by a Summoner and in some games, such as Final Fantasy Tactics, wild chocobos can be faced in battle and they can be recruited as party members, as well.

Appearances[edit | edit source]

Final Fantasy series[edit | edit source]

Chocobos made their first appearance in the 1988 game Final Fantasy II on the Famicom. They can be encountered in the forest south of Kashuan keep. By interacting with a chocobo, the player will be able to ride one on the world map and it will retreat to the forest after it is dismounted. In Final Fantasy V, a chocobo named Boko is the companion of the main character Bartz Klauser. Chocobos named Boko, or Boco, have gone on to make regular appearances in other games in the series.

Dragon Quest X [edit | edit source]

A chocobo appears alongside the Black Mage Shantotto in a collaboration event with Square Enix's MMORPG Final Fantasy XI. Players can help Shantotto get items like Gyshal Greens for her chocobo.

Dragon Quest Tact[edit | edit source]

Chocobo appears as an A-rank monster of the ??? family during the second part of the limited War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius event.
