The choker can be found in the ruins of the Zwaardsrust Region behind the door that requires the Magic Key to be opened. It is hidden in a chest, and when acquired, it is stored in the Important Items section of the party's inventory, meaning that it cannot be equipped as an accessory. Upon trying to “Use” it, the Luminary picks it up, but “senses an oppressively ominous aura, and thinks better of it.” The familiar jingle of a character equipping a cursed item from the older games can be heard when this line appears.
A thug near the ruins is seeking Zwaardsrustian treasure, and initially offers the party 10,000 gold coins for the Choker (continuing the trend of cursed equipment selling for unusually high prices in the DQSeries). However, if the Luimnary takes him up on his offer, he will back down with the excuse that he doesn't carry that much gold while out treasure-hunting.
