Smog is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series. Although they originally only appeared in the second game in the series, they made a reappearance in Dragon Quest XI after 30 years.
Characteristics
Smog are gaseous enemies whose bodies consist of a grey cloud of smoke with a demonic red visage. The noxious clouds are able to disperse their bodies into thin air at will and reform themselves, allowing them to ambush unsuspecting adventurers. They attack by shooting out sharp gusts of wind at enemies.

Dragon Quest XI
Smog appears as a miniboss at the beginning of the game at Cobblestone Tor. The Hero must rescue the boy, Cole, from the monster. Smog appears later in the game as regular enemies in the Tanglegrove.
