The Mysterious Hat (Magic helmet in the Game Boy Color Version) is unique headgear in the Dragon Quest series.

Dragon Quest II
The hat reduces MP consumption in battle and provides Defense of +4 (+8 in the GBC Version). They are occasionally dropped by Magic vampirus, though the GBC Version has one obtainable in a chest at the Cave to Rhone.
Dragon Quest III
The hat reduces MP consumption by 20%, and provides Defense of +8. They are occasionally dropped by Glacier bashers.
