The '''Chain whip''' is a recurring weapon in the {{DQSeries}}. Like most {{Whip}}s, it is designed to attack a group of enemies. It is typically a mid-ranking weapon.

The Chain whip has gone through various designs throughout the years. When it was first introduced in ''V'', the whip had a simple design that consisted of a metal chain, a handle, and a weight at the other end for striking enemies. This design appears in ''VI'', as well as remake versions of ''III''.  When the Chain whip reappeared in ''VII'', the handle became more elaborate, gaining gold sections at the top and bottom, as well as a decorative golden cross at the end, true to the weapon's Japanese name. The weight at the end of the whip also became slightly larger. The Chain whip has a completely different design in ''VIII'', featuring a sharp silver and gold arrowhead at the end and a gold and silver handle with a loop. This design is used in ''IX'' and ''Heroes''.

The Chain whip has an {{Attack}} bonus of +27. It can be bought in [[Khoryv]] and [[Asham]] for 1,000 [[gold]] coins and only appears in remake versions of the game. It can only be equipped by [[Thief|Thieves]], [[Merchant]]s, [[Gadabout]]s, and [[Sage]]s.

The Chain whip has an {{Attack}} bonus of +28. It can be purchased early on in [[Roundbeck]], [[Coburg]], and [[Fortuna]] for 1,200 [[gold]] coins. It can be equipped by the {{Hero 5}}, [[Bianca]], [[Nera]], [[Harry]], and several monster companions.

The chain whip has an {{Attack}} bonus of +28, a {{Style}} bonus of +18, and can be equipped by [[Ashlynn]], [[Nevan]], and [[Lizzie]]. It can be purchased from [[Wellshire]], [[Somnia (Lower World)|Somnia]], and [[Amor]] for 1,200 [[gold]] coins and sold for 900 gold coins.

The chain whip has an {{Attack}} bonus of +33, a {{Style}} bonus of +18, and can be equipped by [[Maribel]], [[Sir Mervyn]], and [[Aishe]]. It can be purchased for 2,500 [[gold]] coins from [[Allblades Arena]], {{Alltrades Abbey 7}} in the present, [[La Bravoure]], the [[Temple Palace]] in the present, and [[El Ciclo]] and sold for 1,250 gold coins. Chain whips can also be won as a prize from the Lucky Panel at the [[Casino]] at [[Buccanham]] and [[the Haven]].

Chain whips can be sold for 1,400 gold and have an Attack bonus of +26. They are dropped by [[Captain Crow]].

The Chain whip has an Attack bonus of +15 and a Defence bonus of +4. It can only be equipped by [[Jessica]] and can be purchased on the Stonecloud after the events at [[Sylvea]] for 1,200 gold.

The Chain whip is Treasure No. 161 in the Weapons category and can be found on [[the Wingswept Moors]]. Its base value is 220,000 gold.

==Etymology==

The [[Wikipedia:Chain whip|chain whip]] is a real-life weapon that is used in traditional Chinese martial arts, originating as far back as the  Jìn Dynasty. The whip consists of several metal rods joined end-to-end by rings to form a flexible chain, with a handle on one end and a metal dart at the other end, typically used for slashing or piercing one's opponent.
