The King Hydra is the first of three monsters the hero and his companions fight before facing the Demon Lord Zoma in Dragon Quest III. It is an even stronger version of the hydra.

The hero's father, Ortega, is seen fighting the monster, but is slain and dies in his child's arms.
It has a ferocious bite and can spew fire.
