The leather cape is a recurring piece of clothing in the Dragon Quest series. It is typically a mid-level piece of clothing designed for spellcasters.
It's thought by some fans due to their similar physical appearances in artwork that this item was meant to be a replacement for the Fur coat from Dragon Quest IV and the Fur cape from DQV - VII, with some even believing that these items all derive from the Mink mantle from Dragon Quest II.
