Ruin is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series. Introduced in Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, it is the crumbling remnants of a castle, reanimated and taking the shape of a monster with a large right arm.

Characteristics

Ruin is composed of the many broken segments taken from a fortress of some kind, notably towers, pillars, and walls. These pieces are crudely held together, some staying aloft from the body, to take the shape of a bulky upper-body with a head and a right arm. A left arm appears to be present but is incomplete. Think of a Ruin as a Magmalice on a grand scale, just without the fire magic.

Massive and powerful, but also slow, Ruin acted as a boss in its first appearance and maintains the power of that position in its later appearance in the series.

Appearances

Dragon Quest VIII

The ruin of the Black Citadel itself, risen to defend its master Rhapthorne from the Hero and the party!

Notable changes in the remake

Ruin is the last obstacle the party must overcome before they are able to escape the crumbling Black Citadel after defeating the recently resurrected Rhapthorne. While gigantic and capable of delivering powerful physical blows, Ruin is very much lacking in versatility and will either hit one character per round or miss them on account of its arm falling apart. It will only pose a threat to players that are low-leveled and/or short on supplies and magic power after having to overcome several other obstacles while trying to escape.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker

Ruin appears as a rank X member of the Materialist family and can be obtained by synthesizing a Mumboh-jumboe with a Gold Golem. A Ruin is also present in the final round of the rank X tourney on Xeroph Isle.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2

Ruin is a gigantic tank-like three-slot Rank S monster. He can be synthesized by combining a mumboh-jumboe with a gold golem.
