The Ball of Silence or Orb of Silence is a key item in Dragon Quest IV. When used as an item in battle, it prevents the enemy party from using magic, presumably by restricting their ability to speak and thus voice the correct incantations for spells; however, it does not work on most bosses.
Mara and Nara first discover it in Chapter 4, where it proves very useful against Balzack and others. However, they lose it after being defeated by Keeleon.
After confronting and defeating Saroknight in Chapter 5, the party regains the Ball of Silence.
